Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

AWESOME CHALLEGING COURSE
had another great day at blackhorse love both of them as always can't wait to be on the first tee box again
Exceptional Public Course
Depending on the tees you play, this can be either challenging or brutally challenging. The lies in winter are thin and especially around the greens make getting up and down difficult and especially given the slopes on the greens. My only negative experience, after playing here half dozen times as a winter visitor, was that my car was vandalized in the parking lot. Not management's fault, but I would encourage the club to add surveillance cameras in the parking lot.
Spectacular
Second time playing Black Horse, and the conditions were 180 different from the foggy day ... but the experience was equally perfect. Round went by too fast. It's a beautiful, affordable course.
Well done to the staff and course superintendent. Many thanks for the wonderful experience.
Blackhorse
Blackhorse golf course is getting out of hand for the maintenance staff. They should abandon trying to keep the course wall to Wall green like Augusta because they can't keep up the maintenance. Blackhorse should switch to a Single line irrigation system with dormant Bermuda on the perimeter of the golf course like they do in Palm Springs. Or some other creative ways to maintain the heart of the golf course.
Nice course long distance. Greens are challenging.
I never really played here very much because their prices used to be a lot higher now they’ve lowered them which is nice. Also they were very tight with their practice balls you’d get a handful for four dollars from what I remember or there of. Now for five bucks you get 40 which is a more than enough plus there’s always balls laying around the chipping range after you’re done. They might’ve been doing this for a long while I just played other places.
Stunning course, affordable excellence
My cousin made the trip out from San Jose, while I traveled 2+ hrs from Stockton to play Black Horse. Staff was extremely friendly, pro shop immaculate. Course was in superb condition. Shot a higher score than normal, but it didn't matter -- thoroughly enjoyed the round. Well worth the trek.
Great venue
This is a great course in every way. The conditions, layout, staff and locale are top notch. We even got a great deal for $70 with cart and range balls which made the round even better. I recommend this place for anyone...
Lovely Challenge overlooking Monterey Bay
Having played its sister course Bayonet our foursome decided to tackle Black Horse.
The intermittent rain only added to the occasion and made the greens pretty difficult to read as the sun never really came out.
Course was in marvelous condition with many ground staff operating around the holes which is always a good sign.
Teeing off just after 9am our starter suggested we take a golf cart with a window v without which given the drizzle was good advice.
The course plays long and fortunately the driver was on point most of the day - some of the doglegs deserved a well hit 5 iron which rewarded the golfer with a nice approach to the green.
If I had a quibble was some of the greens are on a downward slope which meant even a slight over hit ( or underhit depending where your ball landed) resulted in a 30-40 yard trundle into the rough. This may be an issue for first timers to the course ( like us) but repeat golfers will take this into account.
As we progressed through the course we were rewarded to wonderful views of Monterey Bay as the sea mist and rain started to clear. A well deserved whisky from the cart girl added to the occasion and a nice reward for a well paced well played 18.
In summary we’re returning soon to see if we can exercise some of our demons from the first round!
