Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Bring your short game!

Played blackhorse. Got hot deal so great price. Pace was very good. Course is fun but greens are very tricky and pretty quick. Overall course is in decent shape but a lot of bare lies. Not much if any cushion under the ball. I thought I played decent and could only manage two or three pars for the whole round. I’m about a 14 handicap with a good short game. I found the greens very difficult to putt and so did others In the group.

Bring your best short game

Excellent staff offering friendly service everywhere. Fast and undulating greens, together with well-bunkered, humpy, green complexes, make a good short game critical to scoring well. Conditions of greens were great, tees above average, but fairways and rough, nor so good. Looking a little worn - even for mid-January.

Great Conditions for January

Played new years day and there were a couple of muddy spots and/or maintenance areas but for golf in January this course was in great condition. I highly recommend both Bayonet and Black Horse if you get the chance.
