Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Black Horse was a beautiful course and well maintained throughout. Fairways were in good condition and tee boxes were in better condition than expected based on other reviews. Greens were fast and rolling great. Just beware greens are very undulating and almost broken into quadrants so if you want to keep your score low your putting needs to be on point as well as your short game.
10/10 would play again, just wish it was more affordable
Great Day on the Links at Black Horse!
Thoroughly enjoyed our round today at Black Horse! Took advantage of the excellent driving range and short game practice areas prior to the round. Staff was very accommodating and friendly.
Really enjoyed the course lay-out - holes were well-marked, and signage to next hole more than adequate. Greens were somewhat slow as they had been sanded recently. Fairways were in excellent shape other than a few areas that were under repair. The rough was fairly long, so keeping the ball in the fairway was important!
Blackhorse
Rode the Blues (6533/71.5/131) in 3.5H early morning. 60ish, sunny and fairly calm.
Beautiful, really demanding layout. Lots of fairway traps, constantly up down rolling hills and large, undulating greens. Some nice views of the bay in the distance on several holes. Based on what I had read/heard, expectations were high and overall the course met expectations.
Tees were the weak link. Thin coverage, lots of divots and they had been recently sanded.
Fairways were nice to play from. Firm and tight.
Fescue rough on the front was grown up to 4-5" and thick/wet. Made even worse with thick, wet piles of cut grass on top. I can only imagine how tall it was before the last cutting? Basically unplayable and you almost had to step on your ball to find it. Been a long time since I have played in rough right beside the fairway any more punitive. Rough on the back was mowed down more in the 2-3" range and while thick was not wet. Like playing 2 different courses.
Sand traps were incredibly well maintained. Every one I saw was completely raked with thick sand. And I saw more than my share.
Large greens were very firm and looked quicker than they were. Medium speed and balls would run out more than usual because of the firmness.
Quick efficient check-in, round was prepaid. Group I was supposed to play with teed off early, so I played as a single. Complimentary bottled water a plus, saw the drink cart once. No other services with COVID-19. Carts were nice but did not have GPS. Recommended.
Fastest greens ever
Great course all around good challenge greens are like pool tables lighting fast
Waited too long to cut grass, clumps everywhere even in fairways. Rough had grass twice a high as normal. Not as fun today.
Best value in Monterey area
Beautiful design, beautiful views, well maintained
Poorly Maintained
This was the first time playing this course for me but I’ve heard from many that it’s a great course. The superintendent has absolutely let this course go. The tee boxes are ripped up on every hole, the grass type is inconsistent on the greens in some places, the false fronts are poorly maintained, in the grass along the sides of the fairways is not trimmed. It’s overgrown and your ball gets lost super easy.. For a championship course, I was really disappointed. They should either hire a new superintendent or get their act together soon. It’s sad to see such a beautiful course go to waste.
More information at check-in
The only concern I have is that I didn't receive instructions as it relates to Covid. I was not told to have separate carts, which I was able to figure out on my own, and also didn't know that we are not supposed to pull the pin. Very embarrassing when the marshal had to let us know after two holes.
Beautiful setting
Beautiful area and setting. Greens are in great shape. Very fast with large breaks. Fairways are pretty beat up; very spotty and worn.
COVID is not helping here
Staff was great, greens were firm and clean (as expected) and the weather was 68 and foggy as expected. The best part of the course besides the greens was the secondary rough! Was lush and tough, but fair. The fairways were mediocre at best and the tee boxes were not good on most holes. Can’t really rate the bunkers with the “no rakes” rule in order. The people there are great, but without the after-round cocktail and sandwich, the $116 price was a little steep. I will definitely go back after the COVID restrictions lift, but not before at those prices.
One of my favorite in the Monterey area
Bayonet and Blackhorse are 2 of my favorite courses in the Monterey area. Great value and very challenging.
