Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Great Day
I had a blast that day on the course. It was in really good shape and the greens were smooth and quick. I can’t wait to return for another round.
Great Fun
The course has really changed with ALL THE NEW HOMES GOING UP. I liked what they did with adding all the sand in the waste areas.
terrible redesign, rude management
Great designs have landing areas for intermediates with interesting challenges for advanced players. This course has some of the dumbest landing areas i have ever seen. i liked the old general's design. Also so important there is no physical warning of where the carts stop working when near the green. all it would take is a simple colored stick in the ground. equally important we heard the course manager yell at another party for not realizing the invisible barrier - so rude and unnecessary especially when its managements fault for being so lazy as to not putting up small warning signs.
Fun Course!
Had a great time playing Black Horse for the first time. Very interesting layout with contoured fairways, plenty of up and down, really well bunkered, multi-tiered greens, very nice conditions (tees, fairways, greens, bunkers), and some nice views of Monterey Bay from most holes. It definitely presents a challenge, but wasn't unfair. You just need to be careful to stay below the hole and get on the right level of the green. There weren't a lot of people on the course, and I played pretty quickly in under 4 hours. Some have complained about conditions and sand in the fairways. They are actively putting natural sand areas between the tees and start of fairways which require a carry, but these aren't really in play for anything but a terrible tee shot. I assume they're doing this to reduce the amount of the course requiring irrigation. I found it of no concern. I did walk the course, and it was quite a workout with the hills and some long distances between greens and tees in a few places. The new sand / native areas are still pretty soft, so walking with a pull-cart was best done on cartpaths when leaving the tee areas. I expect these areas will harden up over time, but I will probably take a cart next time.
construction melee
the original design of this course is just about gone. Lot of turf has been removal and replaced with sand. Too much construction work on the course and on surrounding housing projects!
Great layout. Too much activity.
Too much non golf activity. Too much noise. Too many detours. Bathrooms, when located, were being used by workers and were an absolute mess. The course itself is a great layout and the value is great. The greens were rough as they were recently punched. The fairways were good.
Very well maintain course with moderate difficulties.
It was my first time playing this course. Got a before noon Hotdeal and 20% Mother's Day discount on top it and it was a great deal.
We had branch before the game. Food was good and very well priced.
Surprised to learn that practice range ball was included, and real grass at the range. The range was in very good condition at about 11am.
The course is moderately challenging, with a lot of bunkers. Green is not easy to read. The course was under construction in many areas where grass between tees and fairway is under repair. The good things is if balls go into the area, it's easy to spot but the sand would stop the ball from bouncing forward during a mishit.
There are nice views of the ocean at many of the holes but they will soon get blocked in the next few months by new houses getting built.
Wished there is ball washing station since I don't remember seeing any.
Course is under total construction
Save your money this course was under total construction lots of sand being moved. Gas lines, water lines and sewer pipes being installed. I know the new home construction needs to be completed but it’s not fair to charge the price and have to deal with mounds of sand and heavy equipment running the complete round. Monterey has many fine courses so stay away from here for about 6 months. When it’s finished it will be a large eye sore as all the ocean views will be gone for the golfers. Just someone cooking in a new kitchen 😳. All views of Santa Cruz, Pacific grove, Monterey Bay. Your view will be a new two story house with large windows facing the golf course. Just make sure your home owners insurance covers off property damage as the Milgard windows are not cheap.
Greens need work, fairways fine. All the sand and dug up areas are a mess, better before with just weeds.
Great conditions needs more value
Great course conditions
There is a ton on construction going on that makes it it one to avoid for now. I guess there will be lots of houses along the course forever altering the course/value. Entry road is old beat up and bumpy I hope they repave it once the construction is complete.
Staff are a mixed bag sometimes great sometimes aloof
No starter for twilight and no one on the course helping play.
When it’s hitting on all cylinders it’s worth it but maybe not at the moment.
