Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Golfer Reviews
Blackhorse Delivers!
This is the second course at this great golf facility. Blackhorse has a lot of good holes on the property and is a little more forgiving than the Bayonet course.
The greens on Blackhorse are the real story with lots of undulations and multiple tiers. Putting will be very difficult if you don't put your ball in the right spot.
The course was in OK condition, the grass could have been better, but it was certainly very playable. I would not avoid the course based on the conditions we encountered, it is too fun to play!
Make sure you look for a deal on GN to play as you can almost certainly beat the posted $145 price in the clubhouse. We were able to play for $50 with cart.
With lots of good views of Monterey bay, and some challenging but fair holes, Blackhorse is a great course to play in the area at a fantastic value!
Golf now worked well . However both of my playing partners have have difficulty with golf now when cancellations were necessary!!!

Bayonet and black Horse Golf Course
Both courses were of th utmost premium variety as well as the fantastic starters and everyone that works there. They couldn’t have been more accommodating and nice! Just a wonderful experience from start to finish
Nice layout. Needs some TLC
Nice track, but could use some maintenance! Fairways in pretty tough shape. Fun track, nice layout and nice staff. Restaurant was good too.
Great Monterey value
Blackhorse (and Bayonet) are overlooked gems of the Monterey Pennisula…...don't miss the chance to play some very challenging courses at a rate that makes them a very good value.
I should be honored to play here
The staff is amazing. From the greens keepers to the starter. But the blackhorse track. Gives people an entitlement that the Bayonet track deserves. So if you’re looking to get the best experience. Spend the extra money and play Bayonet. Or else you’re gonna be surrounded by golfers who want to say they’re playing blackhorse! But know they can’t hack it in Bayonet. So they take forever reading the greens, the greens are tricky, or twosomes with push carts who moronically, jump ahead of a single in a cart. Who’s eating a sandwich. I’m not a great player by any means. But Blackhorse is a easy track. And if you take longer than watching a actual horse grow into adult hood, to read a break in a put that you miss 10 feet short anyway. Then I think you’ll love waiting behind dude bros who just got the new M6 and want everyone to hear about it. But the staff. Couldn’t be friendlier. Hang out in the bar before your round at Blackhorse. You’re gonna need it
No water/No staff
Brought my boys out to play Black Horse. I figured we would walk the front and ride a cart for the back since they are 9 and 7 years old. Staff was not present at all. Not even to check us in before we hit our first shots. Couldn’t get a cart, plus no water in any of the coolers. I couldn’t even get them to answer the phone at the clubhouse. This is a great course to play, but the staff worked really hard to make it miserable.
One more note: do not walk this course. Distance between holes is way too long.
Decent layout, poor condition
The staff was short and rude. I barely noted the 'aeration" comment on golf now and only after booking. The only consideration given at the course was for a future "free round with a paid round" coupon which of course did absolutely nothing for an out of town guest with no opportunity to return. They also were not interested in helping with booking a round on the other course for the afternoon. There was no cart service and it was basically a very poor experience. The fairways were thin with spotty grass. The recently punched greens were as one would expect. Disappointing, but playable. At least the starter was friendly and helpful. The pro shop staff were so rude, I would not recommend the course to anyone even though the layout is nice.
Beautiful day
Played Black Horse. Very pretty setting. Challenging course with many uneven lies with large, big breaking greens. Enjoyed the day and the course. Well worth it for the golfnow price. However, wouldn't be worth the rack rate (well over $100) as course not in great condition. Lots of bare and dry spots on fairways.
Great Track
I would not have played this course if I had to pay the rack rate however after seeing the great $50 deal on GolfNow I'm glad I did. This is a very nice track and it's in great shape, undulating fast greens make this course challenging with some nice views of the ocean along the way. This course is well worth playing you will not be disappointed.
