Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Golfer Reviews
Great Track
I would not have played this course if I had to pay the rack rate however after seeing the great $50 deal on GolfNow I'm glad I did. This is a very nice track and it's in great shape, undulating fast greens make this course challenging with some nice views of the ocean along the way. This course is well worth playing you will not be disappointed.
Finally Made It
I have been meaning to come over to Bayonet/Blackhorse since the renovations over a decade ago. Blackhorse did not disappoint. I was paired with another single on a sleepy Thursday afternoon and we had a nice pace playing behind 4 older folks who moved along fine.
- I loved the condition of the course. The fairways were firm and fast. Lies were very tight, which I love.
- Greens were punched a few weeks ago I think so they weren't completely healed. Probably at about 75%.
- What a great layout. A nice mixture of treelined holes with some more open holes in the middle of the round.
- Large, undulating greens.
- Bunkering was BEAUTIFUL. Difficult but playable.
- Course is walkable for a fit person but you would definitely need your Wheaties beforehand.
Great Condition
Wife wanted to play golf at Blackhorse for Mother’s Day(I’m that lucky)! She made a good choice! Course was in great condition with tight lies and fast greens. Pace of play was great with no issues! Check in was smooth and an excellent Bloody Mary to start the day. Needed to wait for a good GN deal as the rack rate of $145 is ridiculous.
Great. Course
Paying the green fees through golf now is a must and makes the course value perfect. Course is in very good condition and staffing friendliness is excellent .8
Black Horse GC
The course was not in good condition. I was told they punched the fairways and added fertilizer in March and the fairways were burnt looking and very little grass. As I drove on the road leading to the pro shop, I could smell fertilizer.
Because there was so little grass on the fairways, it was
little hitting off of dirt.
Initial Visit to Course
Had read the course was rated highly, so on a recent trip to Monterey, I booked a tee time at Black Horse. This is a course we course knowledge would be very helpful. Even though I struggled on a few holes the course was a great test of my game. Diffiently looked forward to playing it again on my next visit.
Can't say enough
Blackhorse was in great shape. Perhaps the fairways were on the brown side, but understandable due to the aerating. Greens are almost recovered from aeration, as well. Hit the ball on the fairway and you're going to get a great roll. Hit in in the rough and there is a good chance you will easily find your ball. Pace of play was good. There was some wind, but not too bad. Be prepared for the greens, though. Almost all of them are undulating and difficult to read. Hit it past the hole and it may roll off the green. Overall, 9.5 out of 10.
Great value
Greens recently plugged and because of that they gave a free round of golf! Nice if other courses did that. Shot my best score in a year.
Course is int transition
Blackhorse is always a favorite track of mine. They recently aerated the greens and tee boxes. Currently the conditions are a bit under their normal great conditions. Pace of play was fantastic as the aerated greens and super high winds kept most golfers away. Customer service is always top notch. They even called me a couple of days after I made my online tee reservations to make sure I knew the greens had been recently aerated.
In another couple of weeks I’m sure conditions will be back to their high standards.
Beautiful
Great scenery in a beautiful part of the world... maintained like a municipal GC but an interesting and challenging layout. I will return.
Very good and challenging golf for amateur
Enjoy playing both Black Horse & Bayonet. Courses are always in good condition. About the best maintained public courses.
You got A game?
Play here many times. Always well kept. Fun to play. Challenging. This course will test your short game. Greens are harder than pebble. I would compare to spyglass hill. Highly recommended.
Best winter courses.
After 11 inches of rain in the last two weeks, We always know that we can count on Bayonet/Blackhorse for great golf. The entire facililty drains so well and the greens hold there firmness throughout winter.. Treat yourself to a great test of golf..
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. We are going to pass on your feedback to the teams in charge so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course. We hope to see you again in the future.
