Golfer Reviews
1st time playing course
This was my first time playing Black Bear. 14 index ended up 48-43=91. Played the black tees which are over 6400 yards. This is a bit long for me; 6000 - 6200 sweet spot but others were playing black so did so - course has fairly wide-open fairways on most holes front nine especially is links style with very small greens. Greens are fast and very challenging with lots of undulations. Slope of 134 deserved even with wide fairways. Hitting into wind several holes made 360 play like 380-400. Long hitters have advantage. Hit longer drives second nine which made approach shots more manageable. Felt out of sorts early on; not familiar with course with some blind shots wasn’t helpful. Bottom line; despite unfamiliarity really enjoyed round. Course is interesting and challenging but fair. Great finishing hole. Staff very friendly. Recommended.
Would recommend
Great course greens and fairways good
Will play again it’s worth a visit
Dare the bear
Black Bear is in great shape. The greens rolled nice and true, fast but not lightning. Fairways and teeboxes are in nice shape too,and we played 18 in 3 hours and 35 minutes on a Thursday afternoon. A nice value and definitely a replay.
Sand Sand and more Sand
This is an amazing Pete Dye course - the course really makes you think about all your shots. Lots of undulation on the fairways (and greens). Fairways in great condition and most greens were excellent - a few damaged spots probably from the recent hurricane .
The course should come with a warning - lots of sand and really SMALL greens !
I was lucky to be paired with 2 local guys who guided me around the course which really helped They started calling me Sandy after all the bunkers I found !!!
For me it was just over a hour drive from south of Orlando but it was well worth the drive, particularly as I got a great deal on golf now
Bear Down
It had been over a decade since I had played here. The main reason was about a 40 minute drive from the house and some unfavorable reviews combined with a higher price tag. .But the course was in good shape and the greens were very good. I was glad I played here and would recommend the course all. The only drawback was I was a single and got stuck behind a threesome on the third tee box till the stopped at the turn.
Great conditions/ Greens tough
Overall great, fairways, greens, tee boxes all money. Staff was awesome. Pace of play perfect even on a Saturday morning. Only complaint is that greens are small and tough to hit but they’re in great shape and makes it more challenging. 5/5 for sure go play it if you can
Enjoyable Course
Thus course has probably the narrowest greens you will ever play. Some less than 10.oaces wide and almost 50 long, and quite often at an angle.
Course had seen some damage from Ian, sand washed from bunkers so they were compact but playable.
Enjoyable layout and some interesting holes.
Definitely one to play again.
Grass
I enjoyed Black Bear. It was nice to play a course that has grass (where it matters). I will play it again soon. Great price and a great course.
Hurricane issues
We booked for a foursome but do to a hurricane 2 day's prior one of our guys had to back out last minute. When the rest of us showed up the person at the register said that the understand and that was okay, now the course is changing me for the tee time because we didn't cancel 24hr in advance. I don't feel this is far due to the hurricane damage.
Excellent conditions
My first time playing. I’m a 10 handicap and play quite a bit and thoroughly enjoyed the course.; fairways and greens were great. The course layout was challenging but not overly hard and was very fun to play and experience. It’s a shot makers course and was great to test all the clubs.
Stopped in at the turn to grab some food and a beer was told the kitchen was down and just a couple of sandwiches in a warmer. . A few of the greens had weed patches in them along with some of the tee boxes. But over all enjoy playing this course
Horrible business practices from a very poorly managed course.
