great course, great conditions perfect staff will definately play again.
Course is good, the greens are not in good shape at this point.
Buyer Beware
We played at 12:12 and there was no starter. The greens were gawd awful. To be specific, they looked abandoned, and were the slowest I’ve played all year, no other greens even come close to how slow these are. They really rip your heart out. Hole no.9 is a joke. Huge pools of water, at least three, in fairway. The hole is a mess. The sand traps on the entire property are absolutely atrocious. Humongous ruts from the rain and water, basically look like the bottom of a pond if you could see the bottom of the trap. Basically playing off mud cake lyes. What a shame. Most of the tee boxes were fine, some were very bad. This course is good for hitting drives (except no.9) and that’s about it. I believe fair market value for this course would be $25 if you live nearby. If you have to drive more than 30 minutes, I’d say fair market value would be $18-$20. If you don’t care or don’t take the game seriously, this place works, if you have any pride, do yourself a favor and find somewhere else to play.
Enjoyed Black Bear
Fairways were in good shape. Greens were a little bumpy. Pace of play was excellent; no one in front of us and a two-some caught up with us on hole 16.
It was nice not having to roll your ball to find some grass in the fairway. Bunkers were still wet from the rain the night before. Pro shop and dining area staff were outstanding. Starter was very friendly.
Black Bear is great
Can’t really beat the course for the money. It’s a fun track, fairways were excellent, greens were ok. I always enjoy playing here.
Nice layout, good value, poor course condition
1. Course layout - good design and offers a good challenge. 2. Greens - rolled nice and fast, just be aware they are are very small -- the smallest I've ever seen on a regulation course. Not a problem per se, just part of the design. Needless to say, I used my gap/flop wedges a fair amount, given that it is challenging to hit greens of that size. 3. Fairways - not in good shape. Grass is generally thin and dry so you really have to get down to the ball on every shot. 4. Sand traps - not in good shape, edges are often eroded. 5. Staff - very friendly and helpful. We waited a lot for the foursome in front of us for 4 holes, and the ranger got right on it. He recommended we skip a hole (we were only a twosome) and arranged for us to come back at the end of the round and play the hole we skipped. Super helpful gentleman. Net/net, we played in 4:10 which is pretty good. Pro shop staff friendly and helpful. 6. Value - good value, $55/round is pretty reasonable in this area. They also offer a $25 2nd round/same day option, which I took advantage of.
Black Bear was grouchy
I’ll say this first, great layout, fun homes and the greens are different in terms of size and shape. Some of the greens are actually ridiculous from a shape perspective.
When I got there the staff was very nice and friendly. The guy raved about the shape the course was in. Huh? Greens were in bad shape, bumpy, not a lot of grass, weeds and damaged in some places. The traps were equally bad and clearly had not been given any attention in some time. Concrete in some places and nice soft sand in other areas.
Would still play again.
Narrow greens
Smallest and narrowest greens I ever played on. Also, too many blind shots. Bunkers were in horrible condition. Extremely unfriendly staff.
Not Worth It
A lot of earth moved to create this layout.. lots of undulation and lots of blind shots because of it. Very small and narrow and odd shaped greens, most of which had large drop offs right off the green. Most of the time you couldn't tell where the edges of the greens were either other than the fall offs. Pretty fair off the tee though.
Huge bunkers with large walls but sand walls were not maintained (weeds, not raked, canals from water). They would be better off putting in wood boards for side walls. The bottoms of a few were raked at least, but most of them were completely washed out and unplayable. Burned greens, dead spots, thin and sandy areas all over. just not that good of shape.
Cart girl, waitresses in the bar, and starter were all great.
Greens
Course was in great shape and the pace was perfect just like the weather. On thing was the greens, the holes where in the same place for a while as there where allot of impressions from allot of walking near the hole.
