Great discovery for us
Went for the first time today and had a great time. Seems like there is a fair amount of work going on with the course and that’s not a bad thing. Fairways and green in good condition, water hazards are empty...and for us that was a good thing! Greens were a bit on the slow side most of the time.
Pace was good, especially for a couple bad golfers like us. All in all we had a great time and expect to visit here again! Thanks for keeping things running in these strange times.
Course in best shape ever.Country club shape . Greens great but at moderate speed. One of my favorites in California . Busy for 6:30 on a Saturday.Fun Time Classic course
Better Than it’s been in years!!!
The course is in the best condition that it has been in, in many years! The greens are still slow (but that is typical for Hesperia) but they are rolling true. Way too many ground squirrels though.
Nice course
Just stay in the fairways and no problem. Course is in decent shape. It basically in a canyon, so that helps with the wind for sure.
Great value
Hesitant to write a good review because my LA County golfers might flight to this location but a hidden gem in the high desert. Course was in great shape. The high desert air is wonderful. My son and I have played there twice in the last week: price was great, pace was great and we will be back.
Cold and Windy Day
Played here on Saturday with the windy blowing and temperatures around 52. Course was in great shape with the exception of the areas were it plays with or over the water drainage ravine. Greens were soft. Not very many players out, good day.
Needs work
Need a lot of work. You think they could spend a day and put in the yardage markers? That would help players that haven't played there much or at all!!! Would probably be better in the spring, summer or fall. Before the winter rains? Quite a few fairways damaged by flood waters. Not sure about the yardage from the tee boxes? I think it could be a good course again? I learned to play golf on this course back in the early 80's Hope they really try to bring it back. The population has really grown in the last 30years but they haven't keep this course up well enough to attract any of those people here.
Getting better
This course is getting way better with the new ownership. Looking forward to the progress.
Worst course in the high desert now
What once was a great course, in great shape, has become a clusterduck in just a few years. Dead/bare spots, squirrels, leaks, fungus,... you name it, it's here! The attached photo is just a sample. I took it after leaving the course (it's hole 15 or 16 I believe). It's a picture of grass growing IN the sand trap. Yes, in the sand trap. They have a hard enough time mowing the fairways and rough on a regular schedule, now they have to mow the sand traps. This just goes to show you the level of care they have for their course. None!
There is very little maintenance being done on the course. It's being neglected, plain and simple. Parks and Rec did away with their maintenance staff, and it's showing.
This course is now the worst course in the high desert. I give it another year or so before they shut this place down, or turn it into a 9 hole course.
I guess you get what you pay for, and I paid 10 bucks to play. Pace of play was awesome because there was no one out there! I wonder why.
Parks department getting the hang of golf course maintenance
I've played here many times over the last thirty years and Don't recall better conditions. The greens are a little spongey but they roll well and the fairways are plush and green.they have also trimmed the bottoms of the trees up so recovery shots are much easier.overall I'd say that the parks department has learned a lot in the last couple of years and this course is again a joy to play... as long as the wind is reasonable
Just Imagine....
This is by far the hardest course in the High Desert. It has the 7th hardest finishing hole as rated by the SCGA in Southern California.
This course has the potential to be a great track once again, but without upkeep it has diminished into an almost unplayable condition for the intermediate or advanced player.
The maintenance is provided by only a couple of employees who have a hard time keeping up with the maintenance of sprinklers let alone mowing.
The greens are not top dressed regularly and are like walking on marshmallows which makes for a very difficult putting experience. Most times they stimp in the 7-8 range.
The bunkers may get raked once or twice a month, the rough is over 8-10 inches and varies according to what hole you're on.
The fairways need to be over seeded terribly and there are many barren or dead spots.
Thus my title, just imagine. This course was on the PGA Tour back in the late 50's and early 60's. The city has bought the course and entrusted the upkeep to the Hesperia Parks and Rec. These folks are real good at taking care of parks, but Golf Courses are definitely not their forte.
I sure wish a management company like Sierra who is managing Green Tree and Apple Valley could get in there and pep the old girl up, they sure would see a lot more play and maybe even a mini tour or two again.
I keep my hopes up though, maybe one day soon.
Nice old style course
Was in the area and decided to play based on the history of the course. Always like to play a course the PGA used to play on. Course has nice elevation changes, and decent lay out. Greens were in good shape and grass was actually green in spite of the drought. Only issue was pace of play. No marshaling of slow players.
Awesome course
Good mix of long and short holes. Par 3 are challenging. Overall course is challenging and good dog legs. Trees are positioned well
wide open course
The course was good and wide open. Pace was good even with a group of three walking in front of us. They were redoing the greens so they had sand on them which end up helping me out, they took ten dollars off the price for the greens. Staff was nice even other golfers were cool just everyone having agood time.
Great course for the $
The facilities at this course are dated but the course itself is challenging, casual, and fun!
A Hidden Delight
Hesperia is a former PGA tour stop in the 50's and 60'. One can easily imagine the likes of Hogan, Sneed, and Littler playing here with persimmon woods. The course is narrow with trees lining both sides of the fairway. Challenging holes require both fade and draw shots. Long hitters are rewarded with short chips to the green. Average golfers can score well too because every hole is not terribly far. Be careful of the trees! There are plenty and errant shots between the fairways will add 1 to 4 extra strokes. Keep it in the middle and you'll have fun.
