Painted Desert Golf Club
About
One of the pioneers in Las Vegas golf, Painted Desert Golf Course is a 1987 Jay Morrish design has golfers shooting at targets in the desert.
Painted Desert has maintained its place in the Sin City golf community through all its changes by putting on an emphasis on course conditioning. Just because your greens are almost two decades old does not mean they cannot be in better shape than many of the new kids on the block.
The desert is the focus here, but Morrish also works in a few lakes as obstacles.
"This golf course is a very friendly layout and you can score here without having a feeling of imminent doom on every hole," John Scappatura said. "We are a bit off of the beaten path, which means that we almost always have availability for tee times. Everyone who does make the trip out here though appreciates our conditioning, the price, and the friendly atmosphere."

I actually birdied this short par 4 ... now my favorite hole! Photo submitted by Wally4 on 02/01/2013
Great muni
Played this course last minute decision. Excellent layout just a short drive from the Strip. Greens were a little hard and fast, making approach shots tricky. Very good condition.
Great place to play if all the Big Name Resort courses are busy.
so slow
We were on a golf trip to Vegas for a week. 5 rounds in 6 days. Painted Desert was our last round and by far the worst.
We played 13 holes in 3 hours 40 minutes. As there 2 groups on the 14th tee we figured it would take about 1 1/2 hours to finish which would be a 5 hour 10 min round. We drove in.
On our way in we noticed a 5 ball playing the 17th. This may have had something to do with the slow play!
I went to the pro shop and told the gentleman in there about our experience and his comments were;
1) we don't have a marshal, 2) golfers should know how to keep up with the group in front and 3 we don't allow 5 balls. Ummm!
There are far better courses in Vegas to play than Painted Desert and cheaper. We wont be back here!
Not the Course it used to be!
For years, Painted Desert has rightfully claim to have the best public greens in Las Vegas. I now believe that is no longer true. The greens are good, not great. However my biggest issue was pace of play. Any round that goes over five hours is tooooo long. I won't be going back. And, I have played this course at least 50 times in the past.
GREENS WERE VG, TRAPS OK SOME NOT RACKED, HARD PACKED, TEE BOXES VG, FAIRWAYS GOOD,
Death march
The golf course it self was great. The pace of play was beyound ridiculous. Gave it 1 star because there was negative numbers available. 6 hours is not acceptable.
Painted Desert
Greens, fairways, and tees were in excellent condition. Nice value for the money. Needed rental clubs which were very nice clubs. Would play again.
Same as it ever was
Last time I had played Painted Desert was sometime in the late 1990s. At that time, the course was owned by American Golf, a company notorious for keeping greens fees high and course maintenance investments low. Now that it is no longer owned by American Golf, I was curious if the new owners would give the course would show the course some more loving.
And the answer is.......not really. Fairways were in decent shape, but the rough left a lot to be desired (and there isn't that much rough to take care of!). Greens, as they used to be, were slow and a little bumpy (lots of dead spots, but at least less poa annua than during the American Golf days). Bunkers were chock full of pebbles (as if your clubs won't already get scratched up from all the desert shots you will most likely play) and could use a lot of work.
The course design itself has always been challenging - tight fairways, very little rough to catch errant drives, and lots and lots of desert on either side of the grass, followed by O.B. every hole (and caution - all the fences are rod iron fences with gaps in the bottom for balls to roll through once they take squirrely hops on the desert). The course will test your accuracy and patience in ball striking.
late start, slow play, no real sand.
We started 35 minutes late and the round took over 5 hours to complete. the greens were slow and there was pebbles in the "sand" traps.
Painted Desert w/a Lot of Sand
Nice well laid out course of moderate difficulty. Many holes protected with a lot of sand both along the fairways and around the greens. Greens in excellent condition.
Great greens and layout
This course is a must play when in town or local. Great layout and great greens. It's in great shape and the staff is very helpful and friendly. I recommend playing here .
Great course
Played this course with my wife and we both enjoyed it. The layout was real nice and the views were fantastic. The only complaint was there was a group of 4 older men playing real slow 2 groups in front of us and we waited on almost every hole on the back 9 with the group in front of us. NO ranger to get them moving. This made it real frustrating.
Great Value
We played here 10/24/16 at about noon. What a great value!
It was forecast to be a rainy day but we only encountered rain on the first hole and then had the course literally to ourselves. The staff here were very nice and personable. The course was in decent shape with a few holes still struggling from the summer. The greens were simply outstanding... fast, true, and consistent, even with the extra moisture from the rain. We love the design. It's a bit noisy from the traffic but it isn't enough to be distracting. Houses on the course aren't really in play unless you are really bad. A word of advice: be careful on the cart paths if they are wet. They were very slick and I even fell one time. I think they get mossy from the sprinklers and don't suit soft spikes very well.
Good design, great greens, nice conditions, and excellent staff members make this course a true value in my opinion. We will be back on our next trip to Vegas.
great course
Everything went really well. They do identify "golf now "people and, though there were openings we were held to the exact T time.
Best greens in town
There is NO sand in the traps. Greens are always in great shape.
Very Enjoyable Course
I played 1:00PM on a Monday.
I ended up playing alone following a fouresome. I am recovering from broken ribs so the speed of play was fine for me.
The course was lush for the end of summer with some ball marks on the greens. There is a great variety of challenges on the holes with plenty of fairway traps, hills, limited small water hazards, mature trees, and narrow fairways. I was only swinging at about 60% and had little difficulty playing bogey golf. I think the holes are more visually intimidating that actually difficult.
I only played the front 9 due to my health.
The staff was very friendly and responsive with my limited contact with them, although an employee, possibly ranger, chose to honk at me from behind as he drove by on the cart path and startled me. I thought that was pretty rude.
I look forward to playing the course again many times.
Rough shape
The fairways are in bad shape. Hard as rock, crabgrass everywhere in the fairway. Sand traps are really bad. The staff in the restaurant are really nice, pro shop and starter not so much.
Staff
Flight got in early. Went to the course and was told by the first "clerk" they didn't make any money off of our Golfnow reservation so he wouldn't let us go early unless we paid what amounted to three times the rate we had through golf now. And we left and came back one hour and 15 minutes later. The new clerk said the course is wide open and let us go right away.
Horrible customer servie skill
The guy at the front desk, was more interested in arguing to prove me wrong, than helping. I'm an arcis club member, and I book a tee time for myself and on the web. It ask you would you like to add another player. So, I add a second player, but something got mixed up. It add my second player, but not me as a member. Dealing with this guy took 10 minute blaming me that I did something wrong. I, finally asked can we play golf or am I going to need an attorney, because he treated us like we had committed a crime. He made a big deal out of a small problem. If, you tell me you cannot put us in, I would have just went played somewhere else, plain and simple.
