About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6855 yards
Slope 135
Rating 73.8

The Brigantine/Clipper Course at Shipyard Golf Club combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property for one of the more challenging tests on Hilton Head. Brigantine/Clipper has a rating of 73.5, with a slope of 135 from the championship tees.

Designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1982, alligators sun themselves along the scenic, water hazard-filled Brigantine nine holes. With slight doglegs and well-placed bunkers, this golf course requires shot making and a good short game.

With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. This George Cobb design requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Pace and conditions.

Pace was slower than normal. Just under 5 hours. Conditions were really good. Some areas had new sod laid especially in some of the approach areas. I know with conditions and heat down here it happens. We took relief where we could to chop or putt to the greens.

A Very Challenging Course

Played Galleon-Clipper course from the green tees (5400+ yards) and I thought it was the hardest course I played in the area. Used fairway/hybrids on 13 approaches hitting only 6 GIRs. Plenty of doglegs which added to the length of the holes. Shot in the mid 80's which was lower than the 90 degree temps. Layout was great but did not see any gators that we were warned about.

Nicely Done

One of three courses was closed & they crammed the players into two courses.......thereby the slow play rating. Teed off 1/2 late, stood on #2 tee for another 1/2. Total round +5.5 hours.

BUT....course itself was very good. Staff was very good......really like the Pro Shop crew. Did get a bag of range balls to warm up. Would go back.

FYI, Much better than Port Royal course.

Enjoyed the round

I love the Shipyard course. It’s challenging but fair. The only negative is the price. The course might get more play if the price was a little lower.

Challenging yet forgiving fairways

Course in great shape. Enough shade to make it through the morning without melting! Wide open fairways with challenging approaches to greens. Staff goes out of their way to make this a great choice in the many courses on the island.

Only one thing to note

The starter, pro shop staff, and cart girl were all extremely nice and hospitable. Course was in great shape, greens ran true. However, there was a strong emphasis placed on pace of play (understandable) and another staff member approached us twice about where we stood versus our projected finish. He was not informed that though we got to the first tee at 9:08 (our tee time), we did not tee off until close to 9:30. The starter we met upon arrival saw us at the charity par 3 and was happy with our pace given we started late. The other gentleman’s response when I told him we teed off late and never had a gap between us and the group in front was, “Oh, well I didn’t start until 10 this morning.” Though not a big deal, if you’re going to place an emphasis on pace of play and timed finishes for scheduled tee times, please don’t tell us that we’re behind pace when we’re playing at 2:10 per 9, as requested, and only behind “pace” because of a delay off the first tee. Staff starting later should take the time to get up to speed with groups already on the course before approaching them saying they need to pick up the pace.

Was scared by previous reviews

I had read all the awful reviews after making a tee time and became scared to even show up. It turned out to be nowhere as bad as the reviews had claimed. It’s in no way in excellent shape but was a nice layout and more than playable.

Clipper 9 was great! But the Brigatine 9 had greens that were not as nice. Overall it was a good 18 and the layout is really good for senior tees.

Great Course, More Drinks

Course was in excellent condition. I don't have a ton of experiences playing on higher end courses, but the greens were the best I have ever played. Only issue was that the drink cart didn't come around until we were on the 9th hole and it was already quite hot and humid by then and there was very minimal gatorade/poweraid. The cart had ran out by the time we saw it again on the back half of the second 9. Gotta get that that cart out there earlier and with more actual drinks instead of liquor

Shipyard is a nice track

Unlike many of the curses in the Hilton Head area, this course is being maintained at a reasonably good level. The greens were in great condition and the fairways and tees were pretty good. One or two tees were chewed up. The layout is excellent. Staff, including an on course Marshall who kept play moving song. were all nice.

First timer

Really nice course to play the first time here. Lots of water and sand, of course, but some wide fairways and large greens. Cart girl very nice as well as pro shop staff and cart attendees. Purchasing Hot Deal through Golf Now was big discount.

Would definitely play again.

Great Course

I chose this course mainly for the price compared to the Sea Pines courses for an early round, I got off the first tee right on time 7:15, we played the front 9 extremely fast as we were the first group off. The back 9 took a lot longer (almost 2x as long), that was a bit disappointing but at the end of the round it was an avg. paced round. The greens and tee boxes were in excellent shape, the fairways were great as well. This course exceeded my expectations for sure.
