Blackhawk Golf Club
About
Blackhawk rests on the site of an old dairy farm, where the rolling terrain is suited for this links-style layout. This wide-open course features lots of water, loads of bunkers, and huge greens that are easy to three-putt if your approaches are off and you don’t have that feel for lag putting.
Each side has a punishing finishing hole. No. 9 is a monstrous par 4 that plays 464 yards. Off the tee, the narrow landing area is not conducive for the necessary booming drive, and the water causes problems in the fairway and around the green.
Hole 18 plays 430 yards, requiring a tee shot into the dogleg-right fairway that must thread two bodies of water.
The club prefers that you walk only on weekdays.
Getting there : Take I-35 north out of Austin, then exit FM 1825 east. Drive 5 miles to Hwy. 685 and turn left. Drive another 2.5 miles to Kelly Ln. and turn right.

This Place Has Really Gone Downhill
This course was in rough shape across the board. Super dry, so all the grass was dead besides greens. It was like playing on concrete. I broke 3 tees just trying to place one in the tee boxes. The greens, though they were watered, haven’t been treated for weeds, so literally every green has a super inconsistent roll because your ball hops over the weeds… the holes themselves were also poorly cut - sunken or frayed edges. All tee boxes were closed on #10, so you had to just pick a spot in the fairway and go from there. Zero netting next to the major road, so cars get hit by bad drives often. All sand traps have grown over with grass. This place needs a serious facelift. It may be cheap, but still not worth it. At least the people working the clubhouse were nice.
Rough Greens & Fairways
Unfortunately this will probably be the last time I pay to play at Blackhawk as the course has fallen off tremendously the past few years. Fairways are hard as rocks and Greens are uneven, terribly maintained and very bumpy.
It looks like no one truly cares about the facility.
I am not sure how the green fee per player in a 4-man group is justifiable with the conditions the way they were.
Not to mention the Cart broke down on 18.... and it was dragging the entire back 9.
Its disappointing because it used to be such a nicer course.
Bad
This was the worst maintained course I have ever played. I can’t believe they charged me $50. The greens were so bad. I felt like I was playing plinko.
Nobody cares for that course at all. Should never be over $25 and that’s mostly for the cart
Greens were bad
I like many things about this course including the staff and location and I have played it for many years and yesterday was the worst shape I have seen the greens in, the front nine was worse than the back nine. While the fairways have been terrible for a long time and still are, at least they have filled in all the bunkers with grass which is an improvement, the greens were the one thing that always brought me back. They had so much poanna on them that you had to factor it into your putts, the ball was jumping all over the place at times like a game of Plinko.
This course has a lot of small creeks
You need binoculars to play with if you don't want to lose a lot of a ball.
The course wasn't too bad, but the toilet is too old and a lot of water stains. Need to replace the toilet.
Course Needs lots of TLC
It was wet and cart path only, but course has drainage issues on number of holes. Fairways have lots of patch and uneven areas, but just some loads of sand could fix 90% of those areas. Most greens were full of crab or other type of grass, especially on front side. I use to like playing the course but will not play again until I see reviews that show improvements have been made. Also, looks like all the sand bunkers are now grass bunkers. Probably a cost cutting move, and needed due to shape of bunkers last time I played there.
BEWARE
I read some really discouraging reviews of the course but decided to give it a chance.
TLDR; the reviews were on point, the course is in terrible shape but has a good layout. Not worth your time and money. I’d only play here for $10-15 a round just to practice..
Pros
- good, fun layout
- friendly staff
Cons
- fairways were dead, literally hardpan patches everywhere. It was like hitting off asphalt
- bumps and mounds everywhere, including on fairways. And not due to natural or designed undulation.. almost injured while riding cart
- greens were dead, pretty much dirt with patches of dead grass
- bunkers unplayable
Had fun…won’t be back
The layout is fun. But don’t plan on putting on anything remotely smooth. The fairways are bumpy and super patchy. It’s just not well kept. I’ve played there 3 times over the last 8-9 months. In the summer there were sooooo many types of tall blade grass and weeds. Then that died and the course was…better. Then they didn’t figure out how to keep the decent grass alive so now everything is just dead. The cups were in decent shape actually…I like this course but I can’t see myself playing it until maybe 2023.
Just DONT play here unless you want to break your back
Sad and neglected - if you haven't been here, don't go
I only write this as a warning to fellow golfers.
Blackhawk golf course has a lot* of potential but is very neglected.
The greens have small sand bunkers in them, and grass missing...it's really bad all over (fairways, tee boxes, the real sand bunkers are overgrown with grass).
Apparently, the owners are selling it to a developer and they're just waiting for the deal to go through, and then they will close the course and build houses there.
