Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.

Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.

Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Bucket List Course

Always a good golfing experience. Course is challenging with elevation changes, doglegs, bunkering, etc. Add in the historical factor plus a Donald Ross design and you have an awesome "back to the future" mix going on. I played in Feb. '24 so some of the fairway grass shows winter conditions: bare, dormancy & tight lies. But, all the greens & tee boxes are in excellent shape. The main clubhouse remains under renovation so there are still temporary buildings in use. If you haven't played HP you gotta do it.

Beautiful winter day for golf

Played midday on a beautiful day for golf in the Florida winter. The course was wet from some rain, but very playable. Some Fairways and greens were thin and had been sanded. Tearing down the clubhouse, so no permanent restrooms or food.

Finally got here

This is probably the last of the accessible causes in Jacksonville that I've gotten to play. It took a while to get here but it was worth it. I didn't realize the history of the course as it was a PGA tour stop at one time and the great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par 3 sixth hole.

There is even a plaque commemorating the event on the 6t h tee. In his honor, unintentionally, I too popped a ball into the water. This proves, as I thought, that I am very similar to Ben Hogan.

The course isn't in great shape because it is mid-February but it isn't bad either. The man in the pro shop was happy to discuss the history of the course and point out the list of past champions and to remind me to see the plaque on the 6th hole.

Unfortunately, the old clubhouse is undergoing renovations and I wasn't able to get in there. I surely will be back and will be able to walk where the champions walked.

As for the course, the typical Donald Ross feature of a false front is evident on several greens. Be careful and, on the other hand, try not to be above the pin as it is impossible stop the ball and you can run right off the false front. This makes a very tricky shot to the green where you want to be between the pin and a drop off.

Under major construction

For the price it fine, greens were in good shape and were exceptionally fast.

Ok for the price

Course was built in 1925, hasn’t had much maintenance put into it in the last 10 years. Very forgiving but the greens are terrible, you get what you pay for.

Not disappointed, but not impressed

Drainage for water is poor, rather large puddles even a day after a somewhat moderate amount of rainstorm. Some of the fairways were pretty much mud in certain spots. Course layout was really nice and I enjoyed it as a newbie golfer. This is probably a better course when it’s drier out. just wish cartpaths were smoother.

My friends who are better at golf complained profusely about the teeboxes, but i didnt really notice any difference?

Pay a few more bucks and play somewhere else

The reviews on golf now are severely outdated. The clubhouse is an eyesore…burnt down years ago and nothing been done so a portable trailor is the “clubhouse”, bathrooms on course are portapotties that aren’t kept up, greens in terrible shape and do not run true in any way shape or form…no yardage markers to be seen…except 150 post, cart path mostly broken pavement and gravel mix, ….just in general we found it to feel very run down and unkept though it seems would have been a jewel in it’s day. Yes our green fees were only $35 but we have played much nicer and kept up courses for the same price. However 5 stars for Jeff and Mike who were super friendly staff!

I wish this course were better, it honestly has a great layout, but the course is in bad shape and, I know, they’re working on it. But it seems like they’ve been working on it for a decade and still the course is in rough shape. But most importantly, there needs to be changes with the staffing. First time playing there and pace is crawling. Five hours in and a ranger rolls up to us on hole 13. Claims that we only paid for 9 holes and that we need to leave. We had to pull up our reservation AND show him the charge on our banking app to convince him that we had indeed payed. Other guys we were playing with were regulars and said this wasn’t unusual. Second time playing, we made it through 5 holes when it started storming. Went back and asked for a rain check, even for just 9. They flat out refused and said we had played 10 holes so they wouldn’t issue us a rain check. So twice that I’ve been there and been called a liar to my face both times. Honestly even if the guys had been nice about it, I wouldn’t be so mad. Maybe apologize about the lack of rain checks, offer a range token. The ranger could’ve politely asked to check a receipt or something. But arriving angry and saying stuff like “I know some of you guys are always coming out here and doing this” like man it’s my first time here. I won’t return until there’s a change in management. $40+ is to much money to play bad greens and get harassed by staff when there’s lots of better courses around.

Never again

I am extremely interested in golf history and Hyde Park has that covered in many ways. But what has happened to the course over the years has me concerned the new ownership may lose it.

1. STOP your cart barn from armor alling the cart. It gets on a golfer's hands and is transferred to the grips ruining it. Had to go next day and replace almost all my grips spent extra $$$. .

2. STOP allowing booming music on the course. I go play golf and PAY my green fees for the peace and tranquil atmosphere.

3. You have the history and the framework for a great golfing experience. When you get your legal, financial and finish the rehab of the course let me know and I'll be first in line to tee it up. Until then I am done playing Hyde Park.

Average course, poor management

We did not receive a cart until 2pm for a 1:33 tee time, we were then subjected to an overbooked course with an incredibly slow pace of play. After reaching the back 9 we were told that cards had to be in by 5:15 in spite of our late start due to poor management. Would not recommend this course, not worth it.

The Course was in BAD condition.

The course was an absolutely mess! Very very poor condition. The club rentals are 25 years old, they do not have a club house. One set they charged us for was a women's set and the lady said that's all they had. Will not go back or recommend this.course to anyone. Website and pictures are very misleading.
