When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Good round

Great conditions and well maintained course. Can be difficult if you do not find the fairway. Lot of sand on the front 9 and lot of water on the back 9. The starter was very friendly and so were the staff. Great value for money.

Fun course but you will need to hit it straight

Had a fun day playing this course for the first time. Keep the ball on the fairway and it isn't to hard to score well but the fairways are not real wide and when your not on the fairway good luck! I enjoyed this course and I will play it again. I would recomend this course to average to better players, it might be a bit to hard for a beginner to enjoy.

Walked

This course has some challenging holes.

The weather was very wet the day before my day at this course. I'm glad they let us play, it was cart path only. Too much rain turned it into a swamp, so pick a dry day. I'm sure its terrific when its dry

Can't quite put everything together

Greens and fairways in very good condition. Tees a disaster - saturated with water and no grass. It had rained a lot during the week but the condition of the tee boxes indicate a year-long problem. Too bad because the layout is really first rate. Played four other area courses and all had better tee box conditions in spite of the weather.

Excellent course

This was the first time I have ever played this course and I was blown away with how beautiful the course was. The course itself is on a nature preserve so there were a ton of trees and wildlife. Most of the fairways were very slim and the greens were kept in great shape.

The front nine was not too challenging, I ended up with par. The back nine was somewhat of a challenge. Overall I scored a 75, but the course really made me work for that!

Superb layout

Great course. Beautiful design with scenic woodlands, water and wildlife. Had a wonderful day with my family. I would play here again in a heartbeat. Only negative was that sand bunkers need a little work but that should be accomplished without to much effort.

Slow Play

I really like the course but the pace of play was very slow, we waited on every tee box. The course is very challenging with lots of water.

Much improved!

I played here a couple of years ago and liked the layout but the course was in rough condition. But this time around the course was plush and beautiful with near perfect greens. I got a great price on golf now also. A pleasant day all around,.

Great Course Design

The course is beautifully designed with a lot of variety and challenge. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Course was in great shape except for the tee boxes which were Level but a little spotty. Overall I would recommend the course and may play it again when I am in the area

Beautiful course, well maintained

Our foursome enjoyed an excellent day of golf. The pace of play was excellent, marshals were visible throughout the course and the snack cart was timely. the course is very well maintained and directions to each hole are clearly marked. this was enjoyable for the scratch golfer in our group and a good learning experience for the less experienced golfers. All around - a great Day of golf!

Definitely worth a visit

Fun course to play. A real tee shot golf course that won't require too many drivers unless you're playing all the way back. The greens were in great shape...smooth, true, and a manageable speed. (If anything, true diehards might wish they were a bit faster.) Would definitely play it again.

Great Course and staff

It is refreshing to be met in the parking lot by a friendly marshal offering to load up my clubs in a cart. I like the challenges on the course as well as the beauty and wildlife all around the course (birds, turtles, fish, snakes, etc.) Having the creek and ponds throughout the course makes for a tranquil setting. I would highly recommend playing this course when one is in the Virginia Beach area. If you have a tendency to hook or slice around water, then make sure you have plenty of golf balls. The first time I played hole #14 I lost four balls in the lake. This time I didn't lose any by playing down the right side. I enjoy playing this course.

That time of year

Its that time of year where the courses start to see signs of wear down that way. Heron Ridge, Red Wing, Va Beach National, and of course Hells Point. Although this course has made a tremendous rebound from previous years, it showed signs wear from the wave of tourists. It happens every year around here. The courses mentioned above are a few of the main attractions that tourists hit. The greens were spiked up, a lot of the cups were torn up from idiots not watching what they are doing. As always the courses usually bounce back nearing the end of August and beginning of September. If only the hacker tourists would tear up our golf courses along with running around the town thinking they own it. I guess im not being far let me re-phrase this....."SOME" tourists, there that way im being PC.
Now for the course... the fairways are in decent condition. The greens were fine but with the occasional spike mark that even Michael Jackson would of been proud of. For the love of god....WATCH THE CUP WHEN PUTTING THE FLAG BACK!!!! Others have to putt !!! The greens putt true and are in great condition with the exception of the above mentioned. It is a challenging course somewhat. Be careful if it rains as this course is in the middle of wetlands so even a drop of rain and this course is soaked.
Great course for the money though.

Pleasantly surprised

Played this course in a best ball tournament about 5 years ago and it was a pathetic experience. New management has since taken over and they have done a great job in turning it around! Greens were like carpets, fairways were in great shape, but some of the tee boxes still need some TLC. Staff was professional and welcoming and set the tone for the day. I'll add this course to my list of regulars. I'll never walk it, though. Some of the distances between greens and the following tee box are as long as another par 5.

Hells Point is BACK

It has has been on the upswing for several years now, and Virginia Beach residents should be looking to come back and play. The maintenance staff has done an incredible job with the greens -- this is NOT the course of 2010. With competitive pricing and a friendly staff, this is hands down the best value in Virginia Beach.

hells point to the point

The staff were awesome, the course was awesome. Now with everything great I have one suggestion and that is get down on your Marshall. He knew before we even tee off that he had a group that was going to be an issue. How did I know that because he was already complaining to the starter about them. He was right, but he should have been talking to that group not the starter. We paid the price, we waited on hole one tee box and fairway for 20 minutes. Pour twosome infont of us was stuck. I shouted at this group to please pick up the pace. It wasn't until 10 were we able to get by them. It was painful. But that isn't the courses fault, it's in awesome shape. So Marshall do your job everyone else are outstanding and doing there's.

Tough off the tee

My favorite public course in the Virginia Beach area, by far. Good length, good hole layout, well trapped, lots of tree-lined fairways, undulating greens. You'd better bring you A-game, especially off the tee. Am now a senior and played the gold tees [5700yds]. Was still a good test. Loved it even more when I was younger and played the tips. Wow! Bring extra balls 'cause you'll need them.
