Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
Excellent
Course was in great condition. Most of the fairways were excellent. Greens were just right. Not to slow or fast.
That time of year
Its that time of year where the courses start to see signs of wear down that way. Heron Ridge, Red Wing, Va Beach National, and of course Hells Point. Although this course has made a tremendous rebound from previous years, it showed signs wear from the wave of tourists. It happens every year around here. The courses mentioned above are a few of the main attractions that tourists hit. The greens were spiked up, a lot of the cups were torn up from idiots not watching what they are doing. As always the courses usually bounce back nearing the end of August and beginning of September. If only the hacker tourists would tear up our golf courses along with running around the town thinking they own it. I guess im not being far let me re-phrase this....."SOME" tourists, there that way im being PC.
Now for the course... the fairways are in decent condition. The greens were fine but with the occasional spike mark that even Michael Jackson would of been proud of. For the love of god....WATCH THE CUP WHEN PUTTING THE FLAG BACK!!!! Others have to putt !!! The greens putt true and are in great condition with the exception of the above mentioned. It is a challenging course somewhat. Be careful if it rains as this course is in the middle of wetlands so even a drop of rain and this course is soaked.
Great course for the money though.
Family vacation outing
Enjoyed the course. Fair test of golf. Friendly staff. One of the top 3 all time good looking cart girls!
Pleasantly surprised
Played this course in a best ball tournament about 5 years ago and it was a pathetic experience. New management has since taken over and they have done a great job in turning it around! Greens were like carpets, fairways were in great shape, but some of the tee boxes still need some TLC. Staff was professional and welcoming and set the tone for the day. I'll add this course to my list of regulars. I'll never walk it, though. Some of the distances between greens and the following tee box are as long as another par 5.
Hells Point is BACK
It has has been on the upswing for several years now, and Virginia Beach residents should be looking to come back and play. The maintenance staff has done an incredible job with the greens -- this is NOT the course of 2010. With competitive pricing and a friendly staff, this is hands down the best value in Virginia Beach.
hells point to the point
The staff were awesome, the course was awesome. Now with everything great I have one suggestion and that is get down on your Marshall. He knew before we even tee off that he had a group that was going to be an issue. How did I know that because he was already complaining to the starter about them. He was right, but he should have been talking to that group not the starter. We paid the price, we waited on hole one tee box and fairway for 20 minutes. Pour twosome infont of us was stuck. I shouted at this group to please pick up the pace. It wasn't until 10 were we able to get by them. It was painful. But that isn't the courses fault, it's in awesome shape. So Marshall do your job everyone else are outstanding and doing there's.
Tough off the tee
My favorite public course in the Virginia Beach area, by far. Good length, good hole layout, well trapped, lots of tree-lined fairways, undulating greens. You'd better bring you A-game, especially off the tee. Am now a senior and played the gold tees [5700yds]. Was still a good test. Loved it even more when I was younger and played the tips. Wow! Bring extra balls 'cause you'll need them.
Tournament.
When booking our reservations we we're put off right behind a tournament. Slow slow play. Marshall was rude.
Great Golf Course
My wife and I arrived about 45 minutes early for our Tee time. We were paired up with another couple and headed for the first Tee earlier than our Tee time. The course was very well manicured and showed markable improvement since that last time we played here (about a year ago). We had an excellent time with the couple we were paired with and we all extremely enjoyed our round of golf. This course has really been improved from a year ago. I will start playing here more often now.
nice course
very nice course ,challenging but you can shoot low scores if you can keep ball in play beautiful scenery, lots of water wilderness and sand
Wood lined fairways with lots of water views
Very impressed with the layout. About 6,000 yards from the white tees but most fairways are tight. Great par 3's mostly with carry over water. Nice wide creek runs through course. Greens were smooth, fairways about average. Overall, a very fun round in about 4 hours and 20 minutes on the weekend. Would definitely play again.
course was in great shape the day after a hard rain
I enjoyed the course and the staff as well as the guys I was paired with
Virigina Beach - 6-09-14
Course was in good shape, played as a single & the other golfers were courteous to allow me to play through.
Read the Book
This was the second time playing this course. Great course especially for the Hot Tee time deal price. I wanted to play it again because of the tight fairways...see if I could change my game plan and adjust to the course. I'll put it this way...I studied the course guidebook (on how to "approach" each fairway/hole) but I still failed the test. 3rd time will have to be the "charm". I love challlenges!
Fun & Challenging
Very good fairways & greens. Much better than the average course in Virginia Beach. Very nice savings booking thru Golf Now.
First time, but will not be the last
Great round!! Staff at the clubhouse got us out and started promptly. Course was very quiet, except for the occasional jet noise.
Nice lay out of course with challenging holes.
I was not sure I wanted to play because of their name. But it was a very pleasant staff and the course made you appreciate what it had to offer. Do not take any hole as you may see it for granted on this course. It is very difficult to visualize the course until you have played it. So I will probably have to play again.
Courses is short and tight
Course was in decent shape pace of play was a little slow that day cart girl was nice and friendly
great time
I played Hells Point golf course back when I was High School for our Regional tournament. I am glad to see the course is just as hard as it was when I was younger. Beautiful greens, plush fairways. Just an awesome day. Thank you to the staff at Hells Point.
Quality
Really enjoyed playing the course. Ruff time draining the day after a storm. Pace of play could have been better, we just happened to be stuck behind a large group. I will definately be going back but keeping one eye on the weather.
