When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

Good layout, good shape, fun to play.

Course is fun to play but, can be a problem if you spray your teeshots. Pretty setting and course is well maintained.

Good Value, would play it again!

Course was in good shape considering all the rain that fell in the week before I played. Course was well marked and directional signs were easy to follow. The yardage book was a great help as I had never played the course.

Played the white tees and found the course very fair for a 12 handicap. Rough was a bit thick but that's how it should be. Greens were in pretty good shape except for a few ball marks, but what course doesn't have that problem.

The course was in okay conditions.

This was my first time playing the course. Everyone indicated that the course was maintained much better in the past.

Deceptively challenging

Hells point is well worth the trip. Holes can come up and get you if you are not careful where you place your shot. Being close to the beach the humidity can be a little higher than inland.

pro shop needs service lessons

Fairways were thin, greens were inconsistent, roughs were soggy. All the staff members except the man in the pro shop were cordial and helpful. You felt like you were disturbing the man in the pro shop by coming to the counter. Lots of places to play in VA Beach. Won't be back here for a long time.

Was an ok course for the price we paid.

Greens fairly slow but layout was fun. Worth playing if you get a good discount, I wouldn't pay full price though.

Very friendly staff and very average greens

Played on recent vacation to Virginia beach. Course is in average condition, greens are ok but not what I would call smooth and very fast. Depends on $$$$$$$ you want to spend. For the money vs. other courses in the area it's not a bad value. Did play heron ridge for comparison and heron ridge in much better shape but almost double the cost....

Nice Course

Best fairways in the area but the greens need to be in better shape for the price they charge, which I think is due to the location of the Golf Course. Don't get me wrong it's a very good course and my overall experience on my first time visit was great and I had a decend score. I was a happy golfer!

A lot of Risk/Reward holes...good layout.

I have played this course over the past several years while vacationing in the area. I like the layout, which can produce a low score. It is good for the person who doesnt play a lot, and challenging for the more experienced golfer. The course was in good condition despite the amont of rain the area had days before. It is a good course to play for the price.

You should play this course at least once!

If you want to grip and rip, this course is not for you. Some narrow fairways and trouble from left to right but very fair. Course makes you think driver versus 3 wood on the tee. Fairways in good shape considering all of the rain and greens rolled true. I enjoyed the challenge and would go back.

Nice hole layout

Interesting course. The staff was very nice. The greens were very slow. The course had received a bunch of rain the few days prior to my round so it was soggy. If you missed the rough it was just swamp land. This course has some aesthetically pleasing shots from the tees. The river you cross mid round is also a nice view as well. The practice facilities were nice and the practice green was in line with the greens on the course, very slow. They rolled true , just slow. I would recommend this course but just keep it in play outside the fairway and rough you won't have a playable lie if its rained at all...but I guess if you hit the ball in these spots you shouldn't have a playable lie, right?

Challengin course well maintained.

Challenging course with beautiful greens and fairways. Very well maintained. Course provides challenges where least expected and several par three challenging with unusual water hazards and large sand trap areas. Couldn't find fairway markers in several holes but not sure if not looking in right areas. No post markers for distance. Kitchen offers selection of sandwiches and bratwurst are pretty darn good. Very strict on coolers and thermoses.

Great Staff! but marshy course.

Pro shop most accomodating in case of adjusting t time. This is a course that is hard to like when conditions are wet. There is noplace for recent rainwatter to go becuz it is so low-lying. Greens were terrific, though adn the course shows evidence of good maintenance.
