Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
Nice local course
The course looked very nice. The fairways were in good shape and the greens were pristine. Everyone there was friendly and very helpful
Greens good, fairways and tee boxes need work.
First day play extremely slow, no Marshall on course. Due to holiday no lawn maitanence on fairways and tee boxes. Staff very nice, greet you at car with cart. Course a very solid test. Enjoyed playing there.
Patrick
The course was in pretty good shape, but the pace of play was VERY slow. There was a wait on pretty much every tee box.
Very nice track
Played on a rainy day, but the course was in great shape. The greens were slow but in real good condition. Had a a couple great challenging holes where imagination was more valuable than a driver. Will find time to get there to play again.
Looks easier than it is - play within yourself or pay
Nice course - cart man - Frank - very cordial - staff overall very friendly and professional - course well maintained
Needs a lot of attention.
Could be a nice course if someone put the time and money into it. I'm glad I played it with the discount from Golf Now, it's not worth what they are asking full price
Excellent public course
Challenging course with good variity of tee distances. Fairways excellent and greens good.
This course has potential
The people at this course were nice. This course use to be one of the best courses in the area. The new management has really let this course go. Its in horrible condition for a $30 round course, yet its $60 for a round. I will not be visiting this course again. TPC is only $55 a round.
Very nice course w/ challenging holes.
The course is well maintained and has several challenging holes. There is a slight drainage problem that comes with the fact that the area is located close to a swampy river. Parking is close and there is an adequate amount of it. The cart paths are well marked and there is even a course resident goat that provides a few laughs.
A lost ball day
The course was in reasonably good condition given the time of year and weather. For average duffers it was a bit challenging due to somewhat narrow fairways bordered by trees. The short sections of rough in front of the trees was almost bog-like due to heavy rains the day before and Spring conditions. This and lots of water hazards resulted in many more lost balls than is typical for our games.
Goat Track, greens have 3 different grasses
This course has an okay layout but it is nothing more than a goat track. It needs A LOT of work. Greens have several different grasses growing on them. Almost all of the greens had poa annua (annual blue grass) growing on them. This is just not a very good course.
In poor shape
Greens recently aerated with many bare spots making it impossible for the puts to run true. The fairways were pretty swampy and had minimal grass.
Weather played a big part in this review
Played this course in 70 degree weather on April 1, so that helped overcome the sogginess of the course and it's average layout, expecting a bit more from a Rees Jones designed course. Not too much that is memorable other than the great deal we snagged at GolfNow. $8 each with the cart. Based on the early season conditions mentioned above, adding dormant (straw) fairways/teeboxes, it didn't feel like a steal.
wet
just too much rain lately to judge this course correctly. the course seems to collect water that just a bit of drizzle would put the course under water
DONT GO During the off season
I would like to try this golf course again during the summer. BUT the condition of the course when I went (3/3/13) was terrible, nothing but mud and water in the bunkers. It hadn't rained for a few days and for 30 bucks I was seriously disappointed. The course layout seemed like it would be a very good and fun course to play if it had been in better shape.
Great course for the money
Two of us went to for the first time yesterday. It just so happened to be after what seemed like two months of rain so the course was, understandably very, very wet. But, the layout was great and the tee boxes and greens were in great shape. We will definitely be back.
Fun to play...
Great course. Not excessively punitive off the tee. Provides many opportunities to make risk/reward shot decisions that make it exciting. Staff very friendly and GC Superintendent is doing great job of improving the turf quality.
So-so conditions but fun winter golf... Great value
Wet/swampy forced a lot of 'winter rules' clean and place mindset... Otherwise fairways/tee boxes in good shape... Several greens were a bit rough. GREAT price, though, and extremely quick pace of play made it an outstanding value
this course really makes you think.
the course is challenging. makes you really think of what shot to play and for you to really know how far you hit your clubs. you must always hit the fairways on this course. if not you will be in mud. from the rough to the trees is all mud and water. so hit the fairways and your fine.
