Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

The greens were in great shape. Photo submitted by wadedaffinee on 07/23/2014
This course was disappointing
We played this course on a very mild January day. The area had a little rain but less than a 1/4" according to the forecasts. The fairways were soaked making second shots sloppy and hard to hit well. also virtually every hole had construction or hazzard lines out, but nothing was advertised about repairs of this magnitude. The greens were mostly pretty good, and pretty fast, traps were fluffy so you had to hit 2-3" behind and hope for the best, so your sand play needs to be pretty good as the bunkers are strategically placed. The layout is kind of bizarre too, back and forth across the same bridges, cart paths that come from behind tree lines only to realize that you are parked at the foot of a tee box with others getting ready to hit, geez. We had a foursome and the feelings were the same, if there has been any rain, the conditions affect play far more than it should. Golf Now helped the rates but still a disappointing day of golf.
Course is not in "great" condition but is a blast!
The course during the winter stays pretty soggy. It is only a little better during the summer. However the fairways and greens are very well kept and smooth in the summer. The greens right now (1/12/13) are pretty sloppy with pot holes 1/4" deep from lack of propper ball mark repairing and pest in the area. They are cut very low and are surprisingly fast for the wet conditions, the ball stopped on a dime and spun back 5' from a well struck shot with a 5 iron almost 205 yards out. Then a well struck put from 2' off the green rolled past the hole 5'. If you are going to play be very careful where you place your ball because it will plug anywhere on the course, even the fairway. The bunkers are the BEST in the area! I was really suprised how soft they were and perfectly raked, there is about 3"-4" of great sand. I almost holed two shots out of bunkers 50'+ from the hole. I had a blast and I do enjoy the shorter par 4's with the chance to make it in two and the somewhat challenging par 3's. The Course is very visually appealing as you are playing amongst the swamp/low lands of the area. There is significant construction inbetween holes 2 and 3 where they have removed some trees and have ropes up exactly where most novice golfers would slice there drive to from both tee boxes. the only other work on the front nine was on the par 3 fourth they are removing trees and putting down mulch along the right, but the trees aren't in the way as they are back left of the green. It is 180 yards to the center of the green and another 40 yards to the trees so should not affect you. Thank you for the opportunity to write a review. Don't forget fella's fix your ball marks and put sand in the divots so we can keep the game respectable and fun for everyone. Also never leave a place in worse condition then when you came! God bless!
Greens are mostly in good shape
Always wet out there but the greens play nice on 80% of the holes.
Course was in good condition for December play. Greens are have really improved since 2011.
Course is in good condition for playing in December; met a twosome from Canada and played with them. The traps are set to make the course a bit more challenging than normal courses. Very scenic course. Greens are have really improved since 2011. Nothing more to add.
Great track
Fun course to play, beauty staff and overall great experience. Good condition for the off season and would love to see it in it's prime. Would definitely play again.
Course flows so nicely through the trees and around the water.
This course flows so nicely through the trees and around the water. You always feel like you are on the course by yourself.
Greens are like three mini-greens in one. Definitely put a premium on hitting the ball on the green in the correct position.
Wish I had found this track earlier.
Great course for the value..!
This course is in great shape, the only issues I have is that there are not enough yardage markers, weather on the fairways or tee boxes, had to guess on some holes. Some greens had damage from the hard summer they had. Very friendly staff.
Don't Bother; Better Choices in the Area
The proshop staff and starter were friendly. But that doesn't make up for the poor condition of the greens. Plus, where was the ranger? We got stuck behind a group that was slow and had no golf ettiquette (didn't offer to let our fast playing twosome play through). After multiple swings and misses, players in this group would top the ball about 20 yards and then give each other golf lessons before swinging and missing multiple times again....while we waited on the tee box. Members of this group who could hit the ball would take a mulligan on almost every tee while we waited in our cart. No ranger to ask them to pick up the pace or to let faster players go through...unacceptable.
Some sneaky hazards
Some fairways are narrow with woods or water hazards; challenging but playable. Frequently, adjoining fairways appear to have open tree borders, only to find sneaky little ditches that gobble up anything trying to roll thru.Fairways and tees were in good shape, but greens were generally pock marked. I suspect this course doesn't dry out real fast as there were several wet areas.
Nice Layout
I enjoyed the way the course was laid out. Tee box and fairway conditions were good, but many of the greens were pretty chewed up. The greens look like they had been aerated 10-20 days prior to me playing and it looked like they were recovering slowly.
Better than I expected
I enjoyed this course. I was expecting a dumpy beach course, but found it to be very spread out and actually pretty difficult. If you stray much off the fairway, good luck finding it in the thick trees and reeds. I'm not sure it's worth their rack rates, but discounts on GolfNow make it worth it.
Fair Course
Course is good, but the greens can use some work. With a little maintenance, the course wouldand be great. Would not play if had to pay normal rate. Can fine various discount tee prices on the internet.
Nice layout teens need attention
Fun course to play if you can get it at a good price At least until the greens are back to decent shape
great greens well kept
timing is everything I played after they got 6 inches of rain so the course played very long
Narrow layout, coniditioning needs improvement
The course is in a swampy area. Most places off of the cart path were so soggy, resulting in a lost ball. Good layout but it doesn't drain well. Greens were slow and muddy.
fairways
happy with first time playing there and was the greens were great
