When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

A fine place for an easy round

This course has some cool elements and could be a nice course with some TLC. For the money, it’s not bad. Drainage is their biggest issue. Greens are super soft and there is standing water all over after a rain. There are some fun holes, but most are pretty basic. Bunkers are in better shape than I expected. Greens could be difficult if they could speed them up and firm them up. I’d play it again on vacation, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to play there.

Rough course

This course has a lot of potential but it is in very rough condition. A lot of the tee boxes were mostly sand and a lot of water all over the course.

Poor conditions and extremely poor service

I played on 6/28. When I arrived at the course and asked for range balls they let me know the range was closed. When driving to the first hole the ranger let me know the back 9 was closed and it was cart path only. They were backed up because everyone had to play the front 9 twice. To top that off my cart died on the first hole. When I called the clubhouse ... No apology just we will bring one out to you.

Here is the best part ... I paid $60 on line. The 3 other people I was playing with paid $35 because of the conditions. When I went to the clubhouse to explain the situation and ask for the same deal they gave me the run around and would not provide a solution. Mike the manager is incapable of rational, logical and customer centric driven service.

The bottom line is the course is in poor condition, The service is ridiculous and if you don't like getting ripped off then stay away from the appropriately named Hells Point.

Poor

First off we couldn’t take the cart to are car or even the driving range. Tee boxes and fairways were in rough shape. Some tee boxes you couldn’t even tee off from. Fairways were pretty bald throughout the course had to move my ball of dirt sometimes. Pretty sad to see them charging $65 for 18 holes on a pretty sad course.

Current owners doing everything they can to ruin this course

The current owners seemingly make this place worse and worse every time I come. You cannot play by yourself in-season (member or not), they will also force you to pay for 18 even if you just want to play 9 (regardless if it’s empty on the course). You are required to carry your bags from the parking lot as they no longer give you a cart until your actual tee time for some weird reason. In-season prices are ridiculously overpriced just for terrible tee boxes, lack of water at water stations, muddy fairways, etc.

Oh and don’t even dare play here in the off-season because the owner’s wife will follow you around the course and repeatedly tell you that the carts have to be back an hour before sundown. Slowing you down in the process.

Look elsewhere and only play here as an absolute last result. Most employees are nice but are forced to do these stupid things because of the current owners.

Stay Away!

Had a confirmed tee time for a single player for 7:18. Arrived at 7:00 and was told single players cannot go out until after 1:00. There was not anyone waiting to tee off. I go to Va Beach every year for the last 45 years. Probably have played here as a single for at least the last ten years. They need to be removed from the Golf Now app since they will not honor confirmed reservations. I live in the Myrtle Beach area. Golf capital of the world. Play three times a week. Never had this problem there. I am erasing the Golf Now app. Unreliable!

Not worth it

Got less than the number of balls for the range. Then staff argued with me about the 17 balls I received from the machine. Then they will not allow you to take a cart to pick up clubs from truck or take over to driving range. STUPID cause you can drive all over the parking lot when finished.

Bunkers are not manicured. Several area of the fairways were not cut. Ranks about as good as Kempsville but 2x the money.

Willl not be ba ck

Great greens! Fairway need an assist!

The greens were quick and fun’. But the fairways are quite short. Maybe just the time of year…. We’re locals so we plan to make “HPGC” a go to for our group! Really enjoyed the course!
