Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

beautiful and challenging layout
this course had lots of elevated tee boxes. fun for the experienced golfer. super fast greens but in excellent shape.
Nice Track
Great Layout, loved the elevation changes. The greens were in great shape and ran fast. Must Play course.
good overall
foursome played 2:35 - 6:50pm; gps on carts did not work, most sprinkler head yardages were worn off; slow pace- 9 minute intervals between player groups should be 11 or 12; greens were excellent; fairways wet in places that shouldn't have been, bunkers were surprisingly good considering no rakes and not much maintenance; course design is excellent, even if somewhat chopped up; clubhouse and restrooms very nice; arrow on rock pointing to first tee is misleading;
Worth visiting
This is a really nice golf course.
Pace of play was good, they currently have 10 min tee times so maybe it was that.
Layout is good, although it is a course you need to be good off the tee, nice condition and the greens have plenty of slope to make them tough.
Staff were friendly and helpful, the bar and restaurant is ice and looks out over the 18th.
Definitely recommend playing Black Gold golf course.
Unprofessional Sales Director
Our group reserved tee times at Black Gold thru Josh Honhuff, Sales Director, a month before. But six days before game date Sept 24, he emailed our organizer that he’s cancelled all our tee times for 40 players! This was late Friday Sept 18. Naturally, our organizer immediately called him…no answer so he left voicemails. Our organizer, fearing that we won’t have a game, started calling all other golf courses. But since it was the weekend, none of the course directors were answering. So, we waited until Monday, hoping to talk to Josh or other courses. To this date, Josh has never returned our organizer’s calls.
He’s done this to our group once before but he gave us ample warning for us to reserve another course. But, this time, it seemed that he didn’t care. Cancelling a group of 40 players on a Friday and not giving us a chance to change the venue is the ultimate arrogance and dishonor to our group that for the last 20 years have played their course at least once every 2 months. Our group is so organized that Black Gold never had to prepare anything for us, like registration tables, or par 3 markers or tallying results. Our green fees have been what they decide to charge…no negotiations.
There is and will always be honor and respect in the game of golf. But, Black Gold’s sales director obviously does not understand what that means.
For whatever reason, we are willing to accept his decision to cancel us. But to cancel in less than a week, how in the world will we be able to get another course for 40 players in about 3 days (from Monday to Thursday). Did he sell our tee times for more money?
This is the only reason a sales director would make such unprofessional decision.
They say an officer of the company is a reflection of the management and staff.
This is very disappointing.
Decent
Nice course. Greens were punched recently, but not noted in course conditions.
Punched greens
Great golf course that I usually enjoy playing.
Greens were punched 2weeks ago and pro shop guy told me that the greens are at90-95%.
They were 70% at best.
I wouldn’t pay $125 again to play here under current conditions...I wouldn’t even pay half.
As a matter of fact, they should advertise when greens are punched.
I feel cheated.
Stay Away - bad condition, ridiculous cost
I wish I read these reviews before spending $125 to play Black Gold today. They were charging a cheaper rate for the aeration but now that the rate is back to their normal one I figured the course would be ready - and in even better condition. 100% wrong. The greens are still punched, sand everywhere, all putts are bumpy. On top of that, no one fixes their ball marks so that doesn’t help the greens. Most of the tee boxes were horrible. The tees were moved all over - not playing anywhere close to what the card says for each hole’s tees.
It truly is highway robbery that they charge $125 for what I played today. Go to Coyote Hills for $115 instead! Much better layout. Much better condition. And much better pace. Tee times there are spaced 15 mins. Here they are 8 mins.
We waited on every tee box and every fairway. EVERY single hole we played had 3-4 groups on at once. Normally one on the green, one on the fairway, us trying to tee off, and the group behind us waiting for us to hit. On every hole the group behind us was at the tee box as we were teeing off.
As the most expensive public course I’ve seen or played in LA county or Orange county, there is no chance I could ever recommend.
Poor greens
First time playing at this course. Course lay outs are OK but cost is VERY high vs course. At this time putting greens are worse and bumpy. Couldn't able to putt well bc balls are rolling many different directions due to restructuring greens. I don't think its worth of paying $$ this course.
As an organizer of golf tournament, it is scary to know that a golf director, like Josh Honhuff, can cancel an event that is less than a week remaining.
I am planning to call him to arrange a fundraising golf tournament for 100 players but upon reading the review above, I just have a second thought of doing our event at Black Gold.
I am hoping that the management of Black Gold, release a statement regarding the cancellation issue, perpetuated by their Director of Golf-Josh Honhuff.
