Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Great outing
Haven’t played this course in over 15 years. It was a great experience coming back. Friendly staff, range balls were good quality, the course was in great shape. The greens are still recovering but never had a bad roll and they read true.
challenging but fair
Second time playing here and had another good experience. Course is in good shape and healing well from aeration. Cart girl was very friendly as was the pro shop.
One criticism is that they need to get some drinking water on the course. No excuse for having empty water coolers on a Sunday when its very warm. This is puzzling why such an easy fix would be ignored??
Annual visit
We come over each year from England to visit friends and always make time for at least 18 holes at Black Gold. We knew when we booked to play today that the greens had been aerated but we weren’t expecting so much sand ( why not have temporary greens). The pace of play was fine for 13 holes until we caught up with a three ball. It then got very slow and we were appalled by the lack of etiquette. Lots of whooping and shouting and on one hole all three played from the same bunker and not one of them bothered to rake. There were a lot of Marshall’s on the course today and none seemed to pick up on the slow play. Normally a lovely course but wasn’t worth the money today.
Black Gold
Not up to the standards of yesteryear. The fairways had some significant brown spots and disease....same for the greens.

Very nice course
Great lay out
Played the white tees with my handicap 18.7 but found that gold tees would have been better
Still very nice and enjoyable round
Interesting course
If you want a golf course that wanders through canyons, with lots of elevation changes and very few flat lies, this is it. Since this was my first time playing Black Gold, I read the other reviews and knew what to expect. The personnel were great, from the young man in the Pro Shop, the Starter and the Cart Girl. The course conditions were fairly good. The greens were in good shape and ran true. The fairways were o.k., with some areas of dried, out grass. I am giving this course a less than perfect rating because lt was so hard to find a flat lie, even with good drives. Also, the pace of play was very slow. We had to wait on every tee and every second shot for the whole round, and never saw a marshal.
If you want to play Black Gold, make sure your uphill, downhill and sidehill game is good.
Beautiful Course
First time playing this course and it was amazing!
Great expectations, average experience
After all the hype I’ve heard about how great Black Gold is, I expected a first-class experience. What I got was no better than an average “muni”. Driving range was mats, not grass. Fairways were sometimes brown and always uneven. Greens were average, with many examples of damage from unrepaired ball marks. Green speed was a bit on the slow side.
Many of the fairways were closed to cart traffic. This necessitated carrying multiple clubs from the cart onto the fairway, then walking, sometimes uphill, back to the cart. Not a pleasant experience. Several holes had blind tee shots, something that penalizes first-time golfers.
Pace of play was a little slow, partly due to being grouped with a long hitter who required long waits for fairways and greens to clear.
All in all, I was very disappointed in Black Gold and am not likely to return, especially at their premium prices.
One of the best in public courses
I can’t complain about this course except it was hot yesterday. I definitely want to recommend here and wanna play once more! I was especially satisfied with the cart and the service like private courses.
Thoroughly enjoyable golf course. A little rough in spots and the greens could’ve been a little faster but I will have to play it again when I’m back here. I’m biased because in central Illinois where I live I can play ok courses for $20-30 so for SoCal this seems a helluva deal. Beautiful scenery in the foothills and great routing. Highly recommend Black Gold GC.
Good course
This is a fun little course. The course isn’t long or super challenging, but it’s a good course to get your game sharp. The course requires you to think off almost every tee. The key to this course is second shot positioning. The greens were a little slow for my liking, but the pin positions were challenging. The course itself is pretty and well maintained. Great value for what you pay. My only complaint is that because the course is not cost prohibitive, the course gets slowed down by casual golfers. Nevertheless, I’ll be coming back.
Out of town guest
The dude at the pro shop was super nice when I told him I was an out of town guest. TEXAS.
It was hot as TEXAS on the course too.
Well maintained and greens are fast.
Houston is flat land so I enjoyed the scenery and all the challenges offered on this course. I was going to play it again but wanted to try another course while I was here. I'll be back.
Views are sweet.
Went out early on a Saturday and paired with Father/son twosome. We, as a three ball, had to wait on a shot twice all day both of which were on par 3s. I was impressed by the pace of play. Back nine views are pretty impressive with multimiliion dollar homes on the course and views Orange County. What a spot for a course! However the course itself needs some TLC. It looks like it hasn't been overseeded in ages with a mixture of grasses leaving you with very questionable lies throughout the course. The greens were not consistent either. We were out early (nobody messing up the greens in front of us) and the bells were bouncing and switching directions even on the short ones. Also the GPS was way off on the cart. On 18 it had the pin placed on the back right when it was actually up front. I did not notice the error until my ball airmailed the front left of the green. We also were getting parched on the course because the beverage cart came around one time as we left the tee on 17. I think this course is one of the beat designs in Southern California. A perfect spot in OC. Lots of blind shots. Many greens where the back half is sloping away from the fairway. Good bunker placement. But very playable for the weekend golfer. If they did a good overseed and paid more attention to the greens this would rival some of the $250 courses in the desert or by the sea.
Great Golf Course
Pace of play was slow, but Marshall was around to speed the pace up a little. The staff are friendly. Great course layout. I would comeback soon.

Well...there are a lot of hills on the course, which might explain the uneven fairways. It does happen from time to time where a course might not allow carts on certain holes. It is a beautiful course. Sounds like a little bit of whining to me.
