About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Golfer Reviews
Not What I expected At All
This course was rated highly on Golf Advisor and was a top 25, therefore I expected a lot. I am giving them a pass for the dried out fairways and dead rough because we all know CA has had literally NO winter at all (1/18). However, this does not excuse my being issued a used/dirty cart, teeboxes littered with cigarette butts and broken tees - and a Monday pace of play that drove us away after 11 long painful holes. This is not a walkers course and on the 3rd I needed to skip the hole and jump two walking youngers who were probably 10 or 12 years of age slowly hacking away at the fairway.
My wife had heard several groups of non english speaking folks in the parking lot and when the starter told us that we were paired up, my wife was quick to ask whether or not the gents were english speaking to which he replied a hearty “Yes!”, well, they spoke little english at all and with their limited vocabulary waved us forward to play ahead of them, only compounding the course’s POP problems.
The marshal did visit us once during our round only to point out a fire that had broken out in the distance down in the Anaheim area. I myself was burning up! We exited the course at the 12th and as we drove along the cart path EVERY teebox was the same: stacked with people waiting to play that hole, all the way to the 18th green.
I can be happy that I did not pay full price. I had taken advantage of a Black Friday deal. I do not recommend this course as it’s days of being a top 25 course in 2016 are long gone at this point.
The greens were recently sanded and no one in the proshop, nor the starter nor signage indicated this. I really just see it as another one of golf challenges but it's nice to know this going in. A simple note on the pro shop counter would have easily sufficed.
I’m saddened because I enjoy sharing positive reviews of my golf course experiences and this was not one of them.
You win some, you lose some - but I’m still ahead!
Great Course
Black Gold is a tough but fun course where you are challenged with a variety of shots and great greens. The course is a favorite but can get stacked - as any course in So Cal and you have to pick your times accordingly. Great greens, well maintained fairways with actual sand in the bunkers, super friendly staff and an overall great golf experience. Bring extra balls if you are over a +13 player. Worth a round.
Great place to play
I was very impressed with this golf course: great facility all around, spectacular views on the course, very peaceful and quiet, just a pleasure to play. Greens were fast but fair. Dry conditions enabled the ball to run out. Only caveat: not for beginners, as it is a challenging layout, with lots of elevation changes.
Best GC!
I have been playing various courses in OC and can say that Black Gold is one of the best courses so far. It is a bit pricy but it worth every penny spent. Greens and fairways are in great condition and layout will asks for the best of your golf skills. Pace was a bit slow but it is nothing compare to some other overcrowded public courses. Thumbs up !
Played on a Tuesday @ 11:22 am. Took 4.5 hrs only because of the players in front of us. Otherwise, we could have been done within 4 hours. This is the 2nd time I have played this course and it is one of my favorite courses now in OC. I love the course layout. The course conditions were good, Bunkers were in good shape. Greens were fast and challenging. The Staff was friendly, driving range, chipping green etc. is good. I will definitely be back!!
Nice Layout
Course was well maintained and is in great condition. Greens was rolling fast in the afternoon. Saw cartlady couple of times during the round. Hotdeal made it better for the value! We’ll definitely play again! Downside, 4.75 hours for the round but great day overall!
SLOW - Not Worthy It!
Played on a Tuesday, I've played this course several times in the past, the course layout is good, the course conditions were good, the Staff was friendly, driving range, chipping green etc. is good. The costs is "OK", but - the Pace of Play was EXTREMELY SLOW - pace was a 6+ hour round - way too slow for any day, let alone a Tuesday.
Regardless of course conditions, rate, a 6+ hour pace of play makes this course NOT WORTH IT!
Fun track
Golf course layout was great, staff were great, greens were awesome. Pace of play not so great
Outstanding!!!
Tough slope and lay out...great conditions and fast greens...excellent price through GolfNow.
Pace...
Played the course many times so no complaints on the layout - challenging and enjoyable.
Staff is friendly as always. Very helpful and knowledgeable.
Pace - Should not have been that slow on Tuesday morning.
