Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Exceptions
My rating would have been higher, but they just punched the greens(and it's totally necessary). I've played here before and the course is really great. If I could offer any suggestions, it would be that they not over water the course: a little swampy in areas. Overall, great course.
Great golf at a great value
I have always enjoyed this course because of the excellent mix of difficult and reasonable holes. The course was in good shape for end of summer and the staff as always was great.
Great experience
Certainly a must play. A lot of courses are in good shape right now..this one definitely on the better end with course conditions. A couple holes had a little saturation around the greens, more that you could expect but it did not impede our play. Same say no big deal but the carts might have been top 3 for me with comfort and performance which makes you feel better about chuckin up the greens fees. Staff was really friendly..young kid working the counter was professional bright and talked very well, and a manager, Mark I think, was there asking questions and talking to US while the transaction was being finalized. You never know what you are going to get when you play a blind 4some but somehow we were grouped with 2 guys whose level of play was comparable to ours and weren't shy. 50/50 there and it worked out for us this time. Overall a 9/10 for a public course with a reasonable green fee if you want to play a top end course around Orange county. Maybe one downfall is the chipping green...tucked behind the club house, which you will pass as you make the turn at after 9, and not that big..good thing is maybe not many people know about as we were the only one practicing on a Saturday .morning at 8am.
You must play the course as it was designed, to really score here. I pulled the driver out a couple times when I should have played a lesser club and it cost me...but what's amatuer hour without recovery golf.

Great views
Scenic course. Returned to play again hoping to have gained some course wisdom. Elevated tees into canyons. Risk reward opportunities. Fun
Black Gold is a beauty, nice layout, staffs friendly
I am new to the LA, Golfnow give me a valuable suggestion where to play, same does to Black Gold, this course is a difficult, but well maintained , and staffs are very friendly, I definitely recommend this course to all Golfnow users!
Great layout with many elevation changes.
We had a great time! Excellent conditions, good pace of play for a great price, what's not to like.
Pure Gold
Black Gold was highly recommended as one of the top public access courses in the area. While visiting the Disney Resort, I managed to squeeze in a couple rounds and Black Gold was my favorite. Course is set in the hills of Yotba Linda, about 30 minutes from the theme parks. Lots of elevation change, great views, and challenge. Good practice area.
The fairways, greens were in the best shape I've ever seen them. Hands down the best course in Orange County. Pace of play was excellent as well. Started on a Friday at 310 and finished at 645. Can't wait to play here again.
Black Gold
Played the Blues (6439/71.5/131) in slightly less than 5H with GK Guru's zgolfinman, grantar2 & dconnally. Thanks to Bob, Art & Dave for an enjoyable round. The weather was overcast with a little breeze late in the day. The tees had good coverage, mostly level with few unfixed divots. The Kikuyu fairways were mostly lush and generally nice to play from. A few small areas that were thin. The Kikuyu rough was more consistently lush than the fairways. Not overly long, but it's still penal because it's Kikuyu. The sand traps were well maintained, both the quality and quantity of the sand was very good. Love the type of green side sand they use here, excellent to play from. The greens putted well but were firm. You needed to allow for runout on pitches and chips. Medium speed and undulating, our entire group had various challenges reading these greens on some tournament pin positions today. The customer service was excellent from all encountered. Cart gal out making the rounds. Had a Cuban sandwich and Arnold Palmer after the round. Tad overpriced, but the quality and quantity were both excellent. Good driving range on mats. The carts have advanced GPS that measures to the pin also allows you to measure specific landmarks. Appreciate the course more with each visit. Tough layout, hilly, tight in spots, but a really solid course in good to very good condition. You cannot stray more than a little here or you will incur penalty shots in bunches. Recommended = Yes.
Paradise in OC
Excellent course. Amazing staff - Alll VERY helpful and friendly. Everybody provided excellent customer service. For all these reasons, I am going to purchase a membership at Black Gold.
Course in Great condition
This is my first time to play at Balck Gold GC and I was impressed with the course. The facility is great. The driving range was in good condition. The course is challenging especially for first timer. The greens breaks toward the city and you have to really pay attention to it.
I would definitely come back with friends.
First time, fun but short track
Fun course that would be easier after playing it once. Lot's of elevation changes to non descript landing areas........overall worth it to play compared to other OC courses......
Definitely going back
Great all around. The course condition was very good, and variety of landscapes throughout 18 holes made the experience interesting. Wanted to re-play after first round, but they were hosting tournaments. Would definitely go back to play.
Slow, Overpriced Gold
Unfortunately another overpriced, over packed Orange County golf course. Groups were stacked 2 and 3 deep on many tee boxes this afternoon. Marshall blamed it on a tournament in the morning, instead of where it really lies, poor management. Greens had been punched a couple weeks earlier so, so they were not in the best of condition. With all the rain we had this year, course was in pretty good shape. If you can get a hot deal or other discount, not a bad play, but not worth regular rate for sure.
Falling out of love
Quickly falling out of love with Black Gold. The course was nice and green from all the recent rains, and the greens were still recovering from the recent aeration... no worries. It's the off fairway conditions, the over booking, pace of play, and the carts that have me writing this review, just awful. If you decide to play the course... you will understand. Oh, forgot to mention their driving range matt - oh boy!
Fun track!
This is a great course. Every hole has its own characteristics. Unfortunately greens had just been punched prior to my arrival, so putting was quite the challenge. Look forward to playing again When i am back in town.
