drought
This course is just in horrible condition. They told me they put in Bermuda grass in the driving range to save money in water? Ummm how about you have people hitting into dirt??? Your driving range is downhill so do you think distance markers or grass matter?
The course itself is just bad. Ground under repair everywhere, wild bore tearing up the course and literally no grass in all the important spots...the fairway. greens were ehhh, whatever. Too many ball marks, but that's on the golfer.
It's almost getting to the point where 25 for 18 on golf now isn't worth it. I'd like to play on some grass you know? The drought is killing this course for sure. Might have to give this one a break until spring and see if we get some rain this winter.
confusion
There was confusion who was to tee off first and who with .
Great course great value
Greens quick and true fairways surprisingly green given the draught conditions.
Roddy Ranch
Even with the drought, the staff has kept the course well maintained. The greens definitely were tighter and ran way fast. Otherwise, another good day of golfing. Pace of play was 5 hours, and for some reason, I think a majority of us got caught at the tail end of a tournament or large group play
Summer golf
Roddy is doing it right by concentrating its watering to the tees, fairways and greens ONLY. It's brown but we are in a drought. Tee boxes were good, fairways were ok, and greens were VERY GOOD. They held an rolled true.
Having carts stay on paths only was not a positive experience, especially in the heat. Overall, a good experience but will not return until carts are allowed off paths.
Roddy Ranch in July
A great course when the wind isn't blowing too hard. Challenging, but playable for all levels. Greens are very fast! Course was pretty dry, but that's understandable given the current drought. Bunkers could use a little more sand. The worst part of the round was the cart-path only rule. It really slows down play and doesn't make sense given the very dry fairways. A 90 degree rule would have been much nicer.
Cart Path Only
Course is not as good as it has been in the past. They have gone to cart path only due to the drought fairways are browning. Greens are not consistent at all. To be fair Roddy Ranch will be back to playing conditions when the rain comes. Play early to avoid the heat and wind. Course is still a challenge and a bargain when booking through Golfnow.
brown is the new green
Unfortunately the drought (and CA's new drought rules/allotments) have hit Roddy pretty hard. However, the parts of the fairways that should be frequented were green enough.....and the greens were
in great shape (fast, true, and approach shots holding well). Also, was surprised when told "cart path only" due to protecting the fairways' browned portions......as the temp was 100 degrees the entire round. But, plenty of drinking water and wet towels provided and pace was fast anyway (as no one wanted to be in the sun too long). Despite feeling light-headed by 14 holes, just enough breeze to make it bearable. The rate was great and so was the challenge.
Cart path only due to brown fairways ?????
100 degree day, cart path only due to dry brown fairways ??? Was to hot to walk !!! Water fairways or close. Wonderful course, greens good and fast, cold water at watering stations on course big plus. Some of the ball wash stations were dry, full them. Staff was friendly, fountain drinks $3.00 for a large come on they cost you no more then a dime each if that. Golfnow.com online price outstanding.
Slow Play as Usual!
This course keeps going down hill every year since it was built. When the economy was stronger, they commanded a higher rate and the Golfnow deals were a bit more, but worth it. These days they cram as many people on all at once (small tournaments, golfnow customers, frequent player membership cardholders, etc.) The marshalls give you a head nod as if they are doing their jobs, but just cruise around. The sand bunkers are frequently hard caked mud. If you are a decent golfer, that likes speedy play, there are other courses in the area that are challenging, with friendlier staff.
First and Last time playing it.
Bunkers were compacted dirt, no driving range.
They had "Brown is the new Green" campaign signs everywhere which is like saying 56K dial up is the new high speed. Water conservation I get it but not watering fairways is pretty bad. It was really dissapointing that they have this campaign about brown is the new green but yet you drive by the driving range and the sprinklers were going from the time I got there until the time I left which by the way 5 hour round is not the ideal pace of play. Greens were in very nice shape. First time playing this course that I've heard some good things but definitely the last time I will be making the drive out there.
tekoverride,
Thank you for taking the time to express your feelings of your experience. We take all comments good and bad extremely serious. We have recently completed a ownership change that allows the Roddy family 100% control of the entire property which it never fully had to make this facility what it truly should be! as for the "Brown is the new Green" campaign we had to do something in the way of water conservation as the recent US Open did this year as there is a truly limited resource that golf courses hemorrhage through during the summer months. We have also, taken it upon ourselves to introduce a capital expenditure program that includes new sand for the on-course bunkers throughout the golf course. Next, the reason for the driving range irrigation that you witnessed and full disclosure is during your visit we recently transitioned the entire driving range from perennial rye grass to a full drought tolerant hybrid Bermuda grass that is less dependent on water, fertilizer, chemicals and labor,. This will allow us to focus these savings to the golf course areas resulting in a much betetr product throughout the facility. We truly hope this wont be the last time you play our facility and give us the opportunity to see the new changes and investments into the golf course.
Thank you again for your comments as they are important to our family,
Roddy Ranch Owner
No driving range
Greens very nice, I was disappointed with how bad all of the sand bunkers are. And no driving range
Unbelievably slow
Roddy is a great course with a good staff. The problem is consistently slow play. Management of the course over books (7 minute tee time separation) and marshalls are ineffective. Over the past year, I have not been able to complete a round - week days or weekend - in less than 5 hours. Often I have to leave the course before my round is finished.
Management may be generating revenues, but customers are not getting a satisfactory return for their payment.
Dear Mr. Pfeiffer,
Thank you for choosing our facility and more importantly your comments regarding slow play. We have recently transitioned ownership into the family and now have 100% control of all facets of the facility. We have changed the tee-time intervals to 9-minute intervals, introduced new SOP's for on-course marshals and hired a director of marshals to tackle this head on! Please see anyone of our PGA Professionals if your unable to finish again and we will more than make it right with you, i can guarantee it.. Finally, thank you for your kind words about the staff as they each tried their hardest everyday to give the best customer service they can as we all appreciate every single one of our customers everyday..
Regards,
Roddy Ranch Owner
Drought hurts Roddy
Greens were great! The rest of the course is suffering from the drought. Layout is pretty fair for all players. Some blind shots. Bunkers could use some sand and attention. Pleasant staff.
mitch209,
Thank you for taking the time to comment on our facility. We have recently transitioned ownership back to the Roddy Family and now have 100% control of the facility. This drought has impacted us a ranching family as well as a golf course operator. We recently launched the "Brown is the new green" campaign to do something in the way of water conservation such as the recent US Open this past year. Its very scary as water is a limited resource that golf courses are highly dependent upon. Finally, we have a future capital expenditure plan which includes new bunker sand replenishment to improve those immensely..
Thanks again for your comments and patronage,
Roddy Ranch Owner
out in the country..
great staff, excellant course conditions, come on over and play RODDY RANCH
Bunkers
Please put sand in bunkers, they're always hard pan
Its a challenge courae
It was so windy i have to take 3 extra clubs to get to the green but it was fan
First time played !
This course was refreshing in my mind, considering I have played a new course in years ! The layout was pretty good ( some blind shots ), course condition was good, and the wind well lets just say it made its appearance. Hitting a driver into the wind on a 200+ par 3 was interesting ( made bogey ), but overall had fun !
Nice layout, well kept greens, worth playing
It was warm and very breezy when I showed up to play on a friday afternoon. Joined three other golfers for a pleasant round of golf. The combination of elevation changes and wind made this a very challenging day. Very enjoyable, I would recommend this course to average or better players.
Hilly Track plays harder when windy
Roddy Ranch works hard for your golf $$$ but fails to impress. The challenging design is made harder by strong winds that often work the steppes of this track on the north side of Mt Diablo as it transitions to the Delta lowlands..
Many of the fairways sport bald or burnt out spots (GUR) and the bankers have pebbles mixed into the "sand" making the play out of then more dicey then a normal bunker.
The 5 hr 20 minute round was not worth it on a Sunday afternoon with winds howling.
Sandydad2,
Thank you for your comment and also choosing RRGC for your golfing needs. We have recently gone through an ownership change and have full control of the property now back in the family as a family run / owned business. While we cant control the wind, we will be making every effort to control the slow play issues and have capital expenditures earmarked for new sand! Thank you again for posting as its comments from our guests that we take seriously and will fix to better your golfing experience.
Roddy Ranch GC
I agree. Played for the first time on the 29th and was extremely dissapointed based on what I've been hearing about the course.
jeffrey94583,
Thank you very much for your comments and more importantly choosing our facility for your golfing needs. Full disclosure, we have recently gone through a ownership change this past week and the family has now 100% control of the entire property. We take all comments seriously and will take all the necessary steps to improve all facets of the golfing experience at RRGC. We have immediately, put in place a Director of on-course marshals and established SOP's for this department to improve their everyday duties of customer relations and pace of play. Finally, we have a capital expenditure plan that includes over 100-tons of new bunker sand for our sand traps.

Roddy Ranch GC
