Old Hickory Golf Club

About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Old Hickory
I recently had the opportunity to play a round at this golf course, and I must say that I was quite disappointed with the overall condition of the course. First and foremost, the tee boxes were in terrible shape..
The fairways also left a lot to be desired. They were overgrown in some areas and had large patches of dead grass in others. Lastly, the bunkers were in rough shape as well.
Overall, I would not recommend playing this course until they have put in the necessary work to improve the tee boxes, fairways, and bunkers. It has the potential to be a great course, but it is in desperate need of some serious maintenance and care.
Worst course
Not worth the money. Worst course I’ve ever played.
Nice course
Overall nice course. No starter out there this morning. Driving range is best up so don’t plan on having a meaningful warm up. Overall not bad
I feel robbed
I got a hot deal for $60… a discounted rate. After playing, I wouldn’t have played here for $30. The ONLY nice thing about Old Hickory is the staff, they are absolutely phenomenal and I feel terrible that they have to go to work everyday at arguably the worst course in Northern VA. Fairway? What fairway? This place would be perfect for a Round Up weed killer commercial. The tee boxes were comprised of crab grass and dirt. The greens were a consistent speed but had holes and the cup… whoever punches the holes ought to be fired. Mounds right at the hole costed me a few strokes. The driving range is in about as good of shape as an AA attendee. Had I went to the course and paid, I would’ve been in after 9 begging for a refund. This place needs help and lots of it.
My experience was quite disappointing
I recently played at Old Hickory GC (8/3/2024) and unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing.
Course Conditions: The overall condition of the course was below average. Many tee boxes were poorly maintained, resembling sand traps with little to no grass. Additionally, some rough areas were excessively tall and clearly neglected. I lost two Pro V1 balls just a few feet from the fairways, and the left rough on hole 9 was particularly bad.
Staff Interaction: My encounter with a course maintenance worker added to my frustration. At hole 8, my ball was in the middle of the fairway when a staff member yelled at me to "get out of the fairway." When I approached him, he explained that due to high temperatures (over 90 degrees), the course had switched to a cart path-only policy after 1 PM. However, it was only 12:55 PM at the time, and no one had informed us about this potential policy change when we checked in at the clubhouse or at the first tee.
Tournament Discrepancies: To make matters worse, there was a golf tournament taking place that day. While tournament players were allowed to use golf carts on the fairways, we were left to walk, which felt quite unfair.
In summary, I cannot recommend this course and will not return for several years unless significant improvements are made. For the price, there are much better-maintained public courses in the NOVA area that also feature friendlier staff.
Great course in awesome condition!
Can’t wait to get back out there!
Pace of play was slower around last four hole, popularity of the course was the cause of slow play near the end.
Will do again!
Old hickory 7/21/24
I was very underwhelmed with the course. From it being 90 degree rule with the carts to switching to CPO four holes in because of humidity is a little crazy. The fairways, tee boxes and greens were in horrible condition. Not sure what the $81 I paid was going to but clearly not maintenance. To be told it was cart path only to keep the course in better shape was almost a smack in the face considering there were a ton of dry patches, weeds and no actual grass growing. I love the course layout and it used to be in better condition about two years ago, it is slowly going down a slippery slope. Tee times are always open for a reason. It’s a shame that’s its brother courses such as raspberry can be maintained well but not Old Hickory. The staff is very nice and usually gives out free range balls but not this go around. Understanding it was a Sunday and some slight slow play is expected, however it was quite terrible. At one point we had 4 groups on one hole. I called the pro shop asking for a ranger to come out and help pick up the pace as we were estimated for a 5hr and 15 minute round. No ranger came out, there was no course Marshall the whole round. I tee’d off around 2:40 and finished at 7:15. I have made it clear to all of my fellow avid golfers to not come back as it the course is simply disappointing to say the least. Hopefully this review reaches a few and doesn’t help support courses like these.
Horrible Course Conditions
The course is in bad shape right now and not worth the money!
The worst golf course I’ve played this year
This golf course doesn’t even look like a golf course.
The tee boxes are a mess, the greens are awful.
The pace of play sucks.
The staff is great.
Will not return ever.
Drove an hour to Pay 100 dollars and have payed 20 to play a better closer to home.
Do not come here.
Great Course
This Course was great, fairways and greens are in good condition, and the bunkers were excellent. With a cart, the course had good value for the price. The tee boxes could use a little help, but they did not affect any of my shots, so there was no problems. Overall would play here again!
Troubling decline
I play this course about twice a month and even with the extreme heat this year it appears they are losing the fight to keep the fairways and tee boxes green. I love the layout and design but disappointed that they are charging full price a product that is not as high quality as it used to be. For goodness sake put sand in the sand trap.
Keep going
As per last few plays, it steadily getting back in shape. Not there yet please continue your efforts to improve fairways and tee boxes. Love course layout.
Course Conditions Not Great
Course conditions were not great. Fairways in bad shape, greens were ok. Tee boxes were bad. For the price it’s not worth it but in a pinch it’s not so bad
Would give it a second try
Our tee time was for 3pm, unfortunately a golf camp decided to tee off seconds before our 3pm tee time. There were 6 students and we were stuck at hole 1 waiting for over 20 minutes before we began. At hole 3 (and because of our late start), a pushy single player came up from behind us. He was rude and would begin playing the hole before we were properly far enough away. We let him play through, which required us to wait a little more for him. Then we caught up to the golf camp again, but this time decided to skip the hole and come back if time allowed. Time probably would have allowed if they hadn't slowed us down at the start, so we didn't end up playing one of the holes. It was frustrating. Probably not the normal scenario, but it seemed the golf camp started playing without any regard to the tee times scheduled by paying customers and understanding their pace of play (super slow).
