Old Hickory Golf Club

About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Could be so much better
The conditions (below average) bring down the experience of playing Old Hickory. The design/layout is very good, but they don't seem to care about improving the conditions. Just like last year, too many of the tees have little grass, and yet they aren't doing anything about it. How about some seed or sod? A number of the fairways have thin or no grass (just like last year) and, again, there doesn't appear to be any attempt improve them. The greens are OK but have a lot of ball marks, in part because the greens are on the soft side, so the approach shots break the surface and go down to the soil. Firmer greens means fewer shots digging deep in to the soil, and that translates to greens with fewer ball marks, right?
Oh, if it is raining, the carts don't have club covers. Really?
Don't get me wrong -- the course is quite playable, but it could be so much better if the conditions matched the strong design.
Great Place to Play
My wife and I really enjoyed our round. The course was pretty packed so it took a little longer than normal. They had marshalls out doing what they could to help the pace, but with 200+ golfers there's only so much to be done. The course itself was in great shape and I can't wait to play it again. The only thing I would like to see them do is add a slope/rating for a tee box which combines the 5980 and 6670 tee boxes.
Great Course
All good. The staffs are nice and course layout is fun and in good condition. The bunkers need some work but I know the most public courses in NOVA have the same issues.
A Pleasant Surprise
My first time playing Old Hickory and hopefully not my last. Greeting nicely by the pro shop staff and then headed out to the range. The driving range was the only 4 out of 5 stars for the entire day. They need new hitting mats and a better overall setup.
The course was in great shape. Greens rolled awesome, everything was green and lush. A challenging course, yet very fair.
Jocelyn, the beverage cart girl was amazing and she came around 4 times in one round. Superb! It would help if she had “tap and go” available for her tablet or a credit card reader to help with her speed and efficiency. She is a gem!
I am a single digit handicapper and rate this course very high with the conditions it was in yesterday. I know it will get beat up a lot over the next few months, but hope the greenskeepers can keep this course in the shape I much enjoyed.
I wish you fairways and one putts!
First in Hickory
It was very pleasant 9 hole game with my wife on a sunny Saturday. The landscape was calm and beautiful, and the course was very fun. We really enjoyed the course.
Great layout, not in great condition
Given the premium price for this course, I was expecting a lot more in terms of the course conditioning. The bunkers were absolutely terrible and it was like hitting out of dried concrete. The fairways were definitely on the patchy side, and a lot closer to what I would expect at a county course that gets a lot of play versus an upscale public course. It is not comparable to other nearby gems like Stonewall in terms of the quality.
The greens had recently been tined and top dressed, and pace control was extremely hard to find over the course of the round. The greens seemed very hard (surprising given all the recent rain) and it was very tough to get approach shots to stop on the green even if they landed 5-6 yards before the hole. I'm not sure I've ever hit so many approach shots that hit the green and ended up off the back of the green. I'm usually a very good putter and chipper, and it was very tough to get anything hole high given the variable green speed/hardness - on some greens chips would check, on others they would roll out 10+ feet.
The course layout and design itself was really interesting and a lot of thought needed for approach shots and tee shot placement.
Given the course seems to run $100 for midweek rounds, and closer to $125 on weekends, this is not one I would revisit until someone tells me it is in far better shape. I'm expecting pristine greens and bunkers for any round north of $100, and unfortunately that wasn't the case. The layout is excellent, but the course condition was not. I would not recommend walking as it's 7.4 miles all told.
Neighborhood course
Old Hickory sits quietly back in a residential neighborhood. But feels like your out in the woods alone.
Awful
The tee boxes, fairways, greens are all the same. BAD. Oh, I forgot the bunkers, worse than bad. It’s an absolute crime that they charge $125 for this.
Eclipse Day
Course was empty on a Monday, solar eclipse day. I sped through in about 2 1/2 hours. In pretty good shape. Tee boxes a bit scuffed up.
Not a bad course for the money, layout was a lot of fun. Conditions weren’t terrible for the most part, just a lack of grass on some of the holes. Makes for extra tight lies in the fairway. Pro shop staff was okay, lady working behind the bar was fantastic. Good for under 80 bucks
Needs help
I understand we’re at the beginning of the season, however bunkers are in absolute terrible conditions, tee boxes spotti, almost better to hit from rough than fairways. Driving range is a joke. Greens were only saving grace.
A work in progress
The greens are back to where they used to be. They are working on the bunkers, adding white sand. Fairways are starting to come to life.
