About

Rating 74.7

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Stay away....you will not finish a round, waste of money

This is the most beautiful course you never get to play.....one group I caught up to started at noon and did not finish...

There is no management, no marshall and they do not enforce the rules, no restaurant, the cart girl just drove right by me when I tried to flag her down....rude....on one hole there were four groups.....two foursomes and a six.....one group had kids. Letting them play and hitting from the tip just wasting time and balls.....meanwhile no etiquette...no ready golf...and 20 handicappers playing from the tips instead of the whites...

I personally not only won't go back but would like a refund.....

4.7 rating....yeah right

Great views but Cart Gestapo and No Clubhouse

Not being able to grab a beer and a dog at the turn is a big negative. Not being able to enjoy something to eat and an adult beverage after the round is a HUGE negative.

Cart Gestapo: I hate the GPS set-up that stops the cart from going to certain areas of the course, when there are no other indicators that you should not drive there. If you don't want us to drive the cart somewhere, make it more obvious, put up a sign or a rope of something other than just shutting down the cart. This happened all over the course. A good example is the first access to the fairway on #9.

CHALLENGING COURSE / GREAT CONDITION

We tee'd off at 2:50, pace of play was slow. The course is in excellent shape and the layout is challenging. it's well worth playing Darkhorse.

The Horse

Greens were just verticut which was not mentioned ,but they still were pretty good.

front nine had sand on them in places ,but by the weekend they should be in really good shape.

Always a good test of the game with altitude change and meandeing creeks to take note of especially if you are playing for the first time.

We had a great time on a steeler weather day!

Cheers

Excellent except pace of play

Course was in great shape and greens rolled true and held all reasonable shots in but over 5 hours for golf on any day of the week is unacceptable and there were no marshals to be seen. Seems like 5+ hours is just an accepted standard at DarkHorse despite their claim of a 4:30 pace (which is also too long).

Great Conditions & Layout

For the price to experience, the on course experience is excellent. The staff (very limited) was awesome and friendly. The layout is fair and in great condition. Water bottles on every 3-4th hole and at least one very nice restroom per 9. The range looked state of the art with Top Golf's "toptracer" technology. The negative is there is no kitchen/restaurant that equals the course experience. The hot dogs are ok, but that is your only choice. from the cart person. The course could source and rent space to a food truck or two on rotation. Also, a rented trailer to function as a pro shop would pay for it;sef in merch sales in a few months. They have a cool logo.

Great layout

They spent a lot of money bringing perfect sand in for the bunkers but still don’t rake or manicure them.

No club house and didn’t see the snack cart all day.

Had cool water bottles in several holes

Beautiful Course…

Would have given 5 stars but a few experiences prevented a perfect score. The course itself was awesome. Views were gorgeous. If you want to enjoy nature this is the course. However, being the operation is small, there were no drinking water on the course, slow getting checked in, flags not marked for marked for pin placement, and “cart girl” never made her rounds. Ignoring the lack of operational excellence, the course was still very nice.

Golf Now is difficult to work with

The experience at the golf course was as expected for the price. Nice conditions with a challenge for every golfer depending upon the tees you choose.

My issue is with Golf Now. Had to make the tee time online and did not know I was using Golf Now. Made a reservation for 4 a week in advance. The day before one of our golfers could not make it so I called Darkhorse and changed our reservation from 3 to 4, well before the 24 hour requirement. We checked in, played our round and the next day I found a no-show fee of $69 charged to my card. All 3 of our group showed up on time, they put a single with us for a foursome.

I called Darkhorse on Monday and they had no record of the late fee, showed the 3 golfers I signed up for paid.

I would like my refund of the $69 late fee charged. You have my e-mail address and back account information, please follow through with the refund.

Thank you.

Fred Arnold

Beautiful, Fun Layout and Course

I loved this course so much that I’m heading back for my birthday in a couple weeks. This is my favorite course I’ve played in years. Worth a drive, even if you don’t live close. I live in the East Bay Area and would drive the 2 hours any day of the week!
