Course Highlights
The Highlands course delivers a links-style experience with dramatic elevation changes, blind shots, and carpet-smooth greens that consistently impress recent golfers. Friendly staff and a smooth pace of play make this one of Houston's most rewarding and unique layouts.

The Highlands Course is probably the more stimulating of the two tracks at Wildcat GC, offering better views of the city, natural wetlands and grasses, and some intriguing flat sand bunkers. Case must have an affinity for the No. 7, because like the Lakes track, the 421-yard, par 4 hole 7 is the most difficult rated hole. Watch out for the par 5s on this one, three of which play at or above 570 yards from the tips.

Getting there : From downtown take Hwy. 288 south for 5 miles to Loop 610. Head west and find the Fannin exit, where you'll U-turn under 610 and drive east on the access road to Almeda Rd. Turn right on Almeda and the course is 3 miles further.

Fun and challenging course, unlike anything else in Houston.

This was my first time playing the Lakes course (I've played the Highlands once as well). They present their own unique set of challenges which makes them both fun to play. The thing I've noticed with both courses is that course knowledge is key if you want to shoot a decent score. There are a lot of blind tee/approach shots. I love courses that are set up like that, but it makes it much more enjoyable if you know what to expect. I can't tell you how many drives I stepped up too, debating on driver and 3-wood, and going 3-wood (only to find out that I could have hit driver). Other than that it really is a fun course to play. You won't find another course like it in the Houston area.

My major peeve with this course is the conditions. For a $50-$80 course, I expect pretty exceptional fairways and greens. The greens had some knot-like weeds in them (not sure what they're officially called) and they were really slow. I don't know why, but I associate fast greens with well conditioned greens. Other than that, the greens are kept in good shape and they had the perfect amount of softness. Probably give them 3.5/5

The fairways were a little wet due to some recent rain, but overall they were nice. Just like the greens though, there were weeds in some areas. There were also some dead patches. 3/5

I think for the price I paid, $30 thanks to golf now, the conditions were actually very good. But I would never pay the full $82. The conditions need to be better in my opinion. But if you want a fun, challenging, and different experience than anywhere else in Houston, then this course is perfect. You also get some amazing views of downtown.

Could be a great course...

This is a really nice course, but on the day I played the Highlands, I was shocked to see all the fire ants. I couldn't park the cart anywhere on the path without being attacked by them. They really need to do a better job of maintaining that aspect. I also believe that the price is way to high for a course that is not really in the city. This is a $50 green fee caliber course that charges much more.

Unlike any course in Houston

Wildcat is a great course. Highlands has a lot of forced carries and it can be very tough at times. If you keep it in the fairway it's will be a fun day but if you don't it can be miserable. Greens were slow but in great shape overall. No trees and no shade but I really enjoy playing this course.

Great views of the city

The course was very well kept overall. The pace of play was excellent.Best views of the city! I think they did a very good job of starting people on time. The one thing that wasn't as they describe is the facilities, in their website they state that at one point they where the number 1 as far as facilities goes. They are average.... I'm not saying there bad, but I've gone to munies that have way better facilities.
I thought it was a little bit over priced.

Challenging Track

This course was a nice, challenging one to play that resembles a links style course. The course was overall in good shape, but did have a few weeds on the greens popping up here and there. Don't expect to see that at a course with these prices, but I understand that can be tough to manage. Pace of play was good too.

Fun course

I've played the Lakes 3 times but 1st time playing Highlands, not sure which I like better. Both interesting courses for the Houston Area, well worth deal on Golfnow, would not pay their normal outrageous prices.

greens are supposed to be green

Greens were in terrible condition. They were watering major portions of the fairways on multiple holes in the middle of a weekend day. I'd feel even worse if I was unfortunate to have paid the $50-70 some folks paid that day

Not worth the money

For $85 I expect a course to be in much better condition. I have two infant children which limits my golf time. This is why I hate to feel like a wasted a rare free Saturday morning at Wildcat, but that's exactly how I felt. Greens were poor and way it's overpriced for what you get. Great view of the city is the best thing I can say about it.

wildcat lakes review

Each time I come to Houston, I do my best to sneak in a round at this course. It has great elevation changes, challenging carries, and an overall great layout. Spectacular views of the city, and the Highlands is actually my favorite of the two courses. The staff, especially Lee in the pro shop, was wonderful. He was able to get me right out and accommodate some needs as well. The only reason this rating wasn't a 5 is due to the recent aeration of the greens. The tee boxes and greens were not in great shape which is very odd and has never been the case playing here before. I would recommend this course to golfers of any skill level looking for somewhere to play in Houston.

Usually Great...

Wildcat Lakes is typically in fantastic condition, but they seem to be fighting an invasive species of grass/weeds in the greens. The greens are are in very rough shape, regardless of being recently punched. Hopefully they will get the problems solved soon. Only hot-rate deals make this course tolerable to play. I probably not play again until the course recovers.

Course conditioning well below par

Lakes is a very challenging course with a unique layout for the Houston area, namely lots of elevation changes. Unfortunately, the course conditions were far from the world class standard they like to claim. If it were just the recent aerification of the greens I wouldn't have any complaint. But there were far too many more serious flaws: burned out spots and clumps of crab grass growing sporadically throughout many of the greens, tee boxes with crab grass, if any grass at all, and spots on the fairways which were in desperate need of attention. I expect they will eventually recover, but I don't see it being worth its reputation in the next few months.
