Southwyck Golf Club
About
Southwyck is new and improved after re-opening in the summer of 2002 with new fairways, tees, and greens. This links-style track features prominent bunkering, water in play on 14 holes, and is known for its difficult back nine.
Southwyck first opened in 1988 on the prairie lands east of downtown Houston-at the time, it was the only true links-style track in the area. Like the Scottish courses, this track is susceptible to the wind, and Kavanaugh did a nice job of confusing golfers off the tee, as it's difficult to determine exactly where you want to hit the shot. Depth perception is difficult, and local knowledge is helpful.
The course once served as the home course for the famous University of Houston golf team, and it served them well with its difficulty. Large mounding prevents level lies, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Tall native grasses line the fairway and require desperate hacks into the fairway when errant shots become buried in the heather.
No. 5 is a monster par 3 at 250 yards, but the par 3 No. 11 might be more difficult because of the long carry of a ravine down to the green 212 yards away. No. 3 might be the toughest in Houston. It rolls 467 yards into the wind with fairway bunkers lining the right side.
Getting there : From Hwy. 288 south find the Hwy. 518/Pearland exit. Turn left and look for the Silver Lake Subdivision. Take that road to the course.

Green Hole 1 05/14/16 Photo submitted by garbergr on 05/19/2016
Needs work
The greens were terrible
If they’re charging $46 for a 4:20pm tee time 18, I’m needing to see at least pinehurst at oakmont man
I play 9 holes out of my 18 that I paid for and said it was time to get out of dodge
Close up shop and renovate everything. They have the money especially with what they’re charging now
Good value
I played a weekday round for practice and enjoyed my first time here. The course was challenging with some really difficult holes. I’m working on my golf game so the removal of the bunkers definitely helped my pace of play and overall enjoyment. Will definitely play here again.
Used to be a great course
The front nine fairways are so rough i started doing 90deg cart rule. Greens were in bad shape also. Sucks because this used to be a great course. Pro shop woman was very nice.
Go course for the money
The course is not in the greatest of condition and the amenities are lacking. But for the price it’s a great value and the course is challenging.
Terrible condition, too expensive
There are many other courses in the area that are half the price and twice as good quality. They have no business charging as much as they do.
Bad greens
The fairways or ok but the putting greens are in very bad shape.
Course needs work
The people at Southwyck are great. Pro shop, course, grill.
But the course is a DISASTER. The greens are unputtable-- weedy and bouncy and dirty.
The fairways need rolling. There are no ball washers and no drinking water.
I have been playing Southwyck for 25 years and have seen the course have its ups and downs. This is as bad as I have ever seen it
Sorry.
Weeds on the greens
Putting on these green is like playing on dune hills, and add an extra stoke to almost each hole. Fairways are decent considering its end of winter. The course has a great design and layout but just needs a little TLC
Just need to get their stuff together
Used to be a beautiful courseb10 years ago. Dont know what happened but it’s a goat pasture now a days. Also the Marshall doesn’t do anything about moving along the pace of play.
Good Variety
I’ve been playing this course for a few years now, conditions are getting better and some greens could use some work still but will come back more now. Challenging holes with different clubs off tee boxes outside of driver, good stuff.
Honest Review, Long time regular.
As a Silverlake resident who lives on hole 5, I’ve been a regular player and member at Southwyck for the past five years. I want to share an honest perspective — not to attack the staff, but in hopes that things improve.
First, the employees deserve recognition. Birdy, Amber, and Jaime are always friendly and professional. The day-to-day staff has consistently been kind and welcoming.
That said, there have been ongoing frustrations. Over the past year, I’ve tried multiple times to use my own golf cart. I was initially told I could, then told no. After explaining I have a handicap placard, I was told yes by management — only to be told no again at the last minute. The back-and-forth and inconsistency has been discouraging, and incredibly frustrating.
Course conditions have also been a concern. Many reviews mention this, and unfortunately it’s true — especially in the summer months, the course is often in very poor shape. Additionally, the clubhouse closing at 4:30pm feels far too early for a community course. What if you want to grab a beer and hit a bucket of balls after work?
Most recently, I was informed that despite five years of regular play, I can no longer bring both of my young kids (ages 4 and 5) due to a new strict two-players-per-cart rule. This is especially frustrating considering I legally drive my own cart to the course with both kids, park it, and then use the course carts. It feels like there’s little consideration for resident families who want to enjoy the course together.
I truly love playing here and I love this community. But it does not feel like local residents are a priority whatsoever. Instead, the operation often feels like a massively struggling municipal course rather than the centerpiece of a golf community.
I’ve heard that ownership is officially changing as of today. I sincerely hope new ownership takes this as constructive feedback — and makes a renewed effort to invest in the course, support residents, and bring Southwyck/Silverlake back to being a true golf community for families.
I really hope to revisit this page, and leave a much better review. For now, I’ll take all of my business to Pearland Golf Club. Why? I have to. I can no longer play golf with my kids at Southwyck Golf Club.
Washboard
The fairways are like a washboard on the front 9. The greens have little weeds, mowed, but large enough to deflect the ball path.
Pace of play:
Very slow: 20-30 minutes per hole. No Starter when I teed off at 11 am. Three doubles and one single ahead of me. The double was a couple who had a 4 year old daughter that was running all over the course. Her parents could not keep her close to them. The Little girl could have been hit by a ball from an adjacent tee or fairway! This couple exhibited very poor golf eticect.
By the 8th hole there was fierce backup…could have had a ranger out there on a busy Friday late morning!
Got a good Discount
Course and greens in fair to poor shape. I got a good discount, so it was worth playing.
