Wildcat Golf Club - The Lakes
About
Architect Roy Case created both courses on this new 36-hole, daily-fee facility that is located only 10 minutes from downtown Houston. In addition to the views of the skyline, Case had at his disposal a touch of Hill Country terrain with dramatic elevation changes, as well as the typical Houston- area prairie lands. From this he was able to carve the links-style Highlands Course and the more traditional Lakes Course.
As its name implies, the Lakes Course, which tips out at a par 72 7,016 yards, is loaded with water. The best hole is the 539-yard No. 7, which is listed as the number one handicap. Interestingly, the four easiest holes are the par 3s, which range from 165 to 218 yards.

Cold day in Houston
Booked through a Golfnow hot deal. Played in 40 degree weather, so course was wide open. For this time of year it was in good condition. Nice smooth greens. A few bare lies in the rough, but that is expected for winter golf. Played from tips and it was a good challenge. Course knowledge would be good, as some holes should be seen once, to see how it is best played. A few holes were difficult to decide on sight lines off the tee. This course was built on a landfill. My only caveat was that you would have thought that since the architect practically had a blank canvas, he would have thought of a routing that would have made walking the course easy. I would not recommend walking, as there are some long traverses from the green to the next tee. Visually a very nice course, with much diversity in the hole layouts. I would definitely play again.
Cool course. Less than stellar condition
One of the really tough, fun layouts in Houston. This course is a challenge no matter how many times you have played, or from what tees.
Greens were well manicured but very slow. Hard to get a ball all the way to hole from any distance. Fairways were in poor shape, especially those at the more elevated end of the course. Many teeboxes were closed for overseeding. In their defense, it is December and not many places are looking stellar. However, for tee time in this price range, and a course usually in really good shape, I was disappointed by the condition.
Hi "htowngolfer" We apologize about the course conditions today. December has been a terrible month due to the colder temperatures and rain. We appreciate your patience and hope to see you again before the new year.
No surprise
I like this course because it's always in a good condition.
Hi "u000007375733" Thank you for the great comments. We appreciate the kind words and will definitely pass this along to our maintenance crew. Please come back and see us again soon.
Tough but awesome
Course in perfect condition. Played the Lakes course. Stay on the fairway as the grass lining the fairway is about three inches deep and thick and you will lose your ball in it. If you do find it it's never a good lie. Nevertheless a great course and a great experience
Hi "BatterseaBoy" Thank you so much for the excellent review! We agree the course is in fantastic shape right now. Don't forget to book your next round online with us, and bring your friends!
No Cart GPS is a big minus on this course
The course was in the condition you would expect from a course of it's kind. Only surprise was the amount of blind shots and lack of GPS and Marshall on a Saturday afternoon.
The greens have recovered from the aerification. The range hitting area isn't the best but the view is nice.
Hi "Eparks12" We appreciate your honest feedback. You do have to play the course a few times to perfect your shot making shots. We will definitely take a closer look into some of your suggestions regarding GPS. We appreciate your comments and hope to see you back again in the near future.
Blind shots and slow greens
If you like blind shots from the tees and fairways this is your course. There are no other guides to indicate target areas and the score card map layout is no help. The greens were huge on some holes which makes it even harder when you can only see the top of the flag stick. The greens were also super slow.
Thanks for the review! Lakes Course greens are coming along very nicely after aerification, but they are a little slower than the Highlands. Blind shots with the elevation changes is what makes our courses unique! Hope you will try us again! Thanks.
Green recently aerated
Course and speed of play were fine. This time of year it is hit and miss with the conditions of the greens. Today was a miss. In about two weeks they should be back to normal.
Course was a little wet from recent rains so some holes require cart path at the halfway point.
value was good considering.
Thanks for the review! Greens are coming along strong after our summer maintenance, and they should be in perfect shape very soon. Hope to see you again at the course soon!
My Texas visit 2016
I planned this outing in order to enjoy a round of golf with family who live in Texas, I had never heard of this course I chose it based on its proximity to the Double Tree Hotel on Greenway Plaza. When we arrived at the course we were greeted by friendly parking staff and the pro shop staff were very helpful. The starter was so friendly he had us laughing, we started our round and the course did not disappoint, fairways were well manicured and the greens were smooth. It played somewhat difficult due to us being unfamiliar with the layout of the course. A beautiful course and a challenging course. Loved it (hated the humidity).
Course is in great shape.
The course looks great. Fairways are well kept, trimmed nicely and easy to hit from. Divots are for the most part filled which is not the norm for a lot of courses around here. The greens are excellent. They are soft enough to receive a long iron and they roll true. Pretty quick but not US Open quick. Had a really good experience, pace of play was perfect. The Lakes is a tough course in spots but well worth the play.
Great course
Challenging. Fast greens. Elevation changes.Good test of your skills.
Unique Houston Experience
The elevation change on this course is very unique. I give Wildcat good to excellent marks in every area EXCEPT, there are several blind shots where you must know the course. The signage is poor so first-time players will struggle to know where to hit. The more you play these two courses, the more you'll enjoy them. I wish their carts had gps with yardage markers. Having said that, it's still a must play public course in Houston. Both courses are equally good in my opinion
Good course
It is a good course, but a little expensive for the price. It seems like it is a course you have to play at least twice to know play the ball since there are some blind shots.
