PGA WEST Greg Norman Course
About
The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.
No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."
"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."
Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.
Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.
What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.
Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.
"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Good condiition
The course was in pretty good condition considering the heat they've been having. Fairways were the best part of the course. great divots. Bunkers hadn't been raked for a while, but then again, you shouldn't be in them. Love this course over the other two PGA West courses. Typically it's in the best condition of the three.
Great Course
This was the first time playing this course and very much enjoyed the experience. It was very well maintained with considerable character. Like many courses, if you stay in the fairway you will live to see another round.
Greens were very slow which surprised me...and it took some time to adjust.
Staff were friendly and helpful...exceptional cronavirus protocol. I'll be back.
Excellent condition.
Great course in La Quinta. Excellent condition. We played our round in 3 1/2 hours. Really enjoyed our day in 110 degree temperatures.
Fun day at PGA West
My wife and I enjoyed our round at PGA West - Greg Norman course. The course was in really good shape. The staff was friendly and helpful. Well worth your time and money!
COVID Golf
Courses are just reopening and it was just great to get out there and hit a ball around. Unfortunately for the golfers in La Quinta the city has mandated that everyone wear masks while golfing. In 100+ degree heat! This made for some stifling conditions. I'm an Infectious Disease nurse and we had an MD in our group as well. Once we cleared the clubhouse we doffed our masks. About the fifth hole a marshall came out and told us that someone living on the course had called them to complain that we weren't masked. I don't know...perhaps they were afraid of getting infected from 150 yards away? So I asked if the ones who called were the 2 males that were walking on the course trespassing without a mask or was it someone from the 3 separate private golf carts we saw on public streets with no masks? Anyway, can't fault the course for upholding ridiculous regulations passed by policy makers who have no clue what their talking about. The course was in fantastic shape. Of course the on/off course amenities are suffering since nothing is open except the golf course and there are no beverage carts out on the course. This was my first time playing this one and I really enjoyed the company, the course, the pace. I'll be coming back for sure.
Cart Path Only
It actually would have been a great day to just walk the course. I wish they had let us. I didn't see the need to stay cart path only. The Marshall came by once and referred to being 8 minutes behind. The group was playing great. We even had an eagle out there. But the idea of just pushing a golf cart down the path, ruined it for me. I had to grab about 6 clubs at a time. I didn't even feel I had room to take my distance finder. Numerous times I was in the fairway or a bunker, totally on the wrong side of the fairway from the cart path. I was playing incredibly well, the day was perfect, and I was not enjoying myself like I had hoped.
After the rains don’t play
I’ve played here around 5-6 times so pretty disappointed as previously would be 5 stars across the board. There were heavy rains the day before leaving the course in near unplayable conditions even though we played mid afternoon. Water hazards grew to an extra 10-20 yards from where they normally are, sand traps were muddy, full of water. Unfortunately the clubhouse never informed us of the conditions nor cart paths only until after we paid. Too bad they weren’t honest with players to set proper expectations and maybe offer a discount.
PGA West Greg Norman Course
Went through Golf Now - paid $169 US for a 10:30 am tee time — so not worth it. $69 ok - even $99 but not $169. Bunkers were average at best - fairways were fabulous - only 1 water bottle each, had to wet our own towels - again, for $69, no problem but for $169........ Also had to load our own clubs into our car at the end of the round.
Great value. Good course.
Good course, very fair, good greens, great range and practice greens.
Good value for price through golf now. Off in just over 4 hours in peak season.
Would play again.
Absolutely beautiful conditions. Best of the 10 courses I played in the last 10 days in the Palm Springs area. My only slight complaint was that the greens were quite firm. Having said that, firm always translates to smooth... Probably 11.5 on the stimp the course is easier then it was 20 years ago. Cleaned out most of the junk in the desert so we didn’t lose every ball hit offline. They’ve also added some grass around the bunkers. Wonderful experience!
Great desert style layout.
Very nice staff.
Excellent greens and fairways in great shape. Fairways wide enough to land your drive.
Plays fare with the correct amount of risk reward.
Small issue - GPS was not set to current flag positions. But very good system otherwise.
Very enjoyable experience!
Played the course solo in the early morning and really enjoyed it. Got great advice from the starter about staying out of the bunkers and water...wish I had listened! The pro shop staff and starter were absolutely fantastic. Beautiful course, a little pricey, but definitely recommended.
