PGA WEST Greg Norman Course
About
The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.
No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."
"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."
Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.
Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.
What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.
Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.
"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Golfer Reviews
True Desert Course
Great layout, hit with confidence and you will be rewarded if it’s straight. Some real narrow fairways. A lot of hard pan dirt around fairways.
Course in poor condition
I've played this course serval times and it was always in good shape. The course today was in poor condition. Greens were inconsistent, in poor playing condition. Net/net I was very dissatisfied with the conditions and overall golf experience today.
Great Day
The course is in good shape, pace of play was good, had a great day the short game was working good today so I scored good, I will play this course again !!!!
Great Day
Another great day on a great course the Norman course is challenging but fair.. fairways are wide but missing them puts you on the defensive.. greens are great with a lot of bunkering you need to be in the right spot on them but they roll very true.
This course will make you think but good shots are rewarded and bad shots penalize which is all you can ask
Super slow pace and bad greens and no masks
2nd time playing. No marshal to help get any pace of place accomplished. Been stuck behind a terrible 4 some all day. Writing this review While waiting on 12th hole
Greens in terrible condition. Most Staff not wearing Masks.
Won’t be back again
Challenging course for beginners.
Played this course the day after the Stadium course so this may be biasing the rating. This is a good course for a beginner who wants to be challenged. The course isn’t in as good of a shape as the Stadium course, but that may be part of the landscaping vision. The restaurant food was not the greatest but the bar cart was responsive and available.
.Piece of pie was very good but we were playing at 1 PM on a 100° day. Despite these critiques I did have fun and enjoyed this course.
Great to play when it's hot and not busy!
Was able to get right on the course 40 minutes before my tee time. Had a great day with nobody else on the course - was able to play quickly and at my own pace. Nice day - have already signed up to play again tomorrow with a friend..
Sanded greens
Course is in good condition, greens have been recently sanded. Chipping and putting not great.
Most of second cut rough has died out maybe waiting for overfeeding.
Great layout.
For the future
So when you hear PGA West, you think this course is where the pros play. The course is in great conditions, but if the greens are not running at least 10’s then it just ruins the game. The greens were very slow, made it tough to get a good read. You got to hammer the ball outside of 10 feet.
The course overall was great. Not much room for error, so be accurate.
Terrible greens
Great layout, my favorite in PGA West group. I know it’s Sept, but the greens were awful for the price you pay to play. In season, they are incredible. They do need to have a clock out on the range, as most don’t take their phone to the range to warm up. I really don’t need a lecture by the starter on being late for my starting time by two minutes, of which I found to be very unprofessional. A simple clock on the range would be of great help. As much as they get for fees at this place, I think they can afford one.
Solid value, excellent condition
I always enjoy all the PGA West courses even the Norman. It seems to be somewhat of the red headed stepchild but right now it’s in excellent condition and the price is right. The staff is very friendly and as helpful as social distancing precautions allow. I went out as a single as was paired up with a threesome of great guys around my age and ability. It made for an awesome round. We did wait quite a bit especially for the summer but still finished in well under 4 hours. There are currently no off course amenities hence the three stars. There is a beverage cart though.
The Norman course can be a difficult course if you’re not hitting you spots. Definitely target golf much like a course you’d find in Scottsdale. You can definitely score if you are hitting fairways though. Can be visually intimidating, especially the first 3 or 4 holes. Will be back soon.
Good course but not what I expected
Fair course, first time playing and it wasn’t like the PGA west stadium course more of a common la Quinta course in a gated community.
Having said that, course is manageable and not to complicated , many straight forward holes with wide fairways.
Staff was friendly and they even came out with extra water towards the end of the round (nice gesture in 109 degree weather)
Enjoyed the round despite of the heat.
