Bathgate Castle sat on what's now the 10th hole of the Bathgate Golf Club's course. It was part of the dowry given to Walter Stewart when he married King Robert the Bruce's daughter Marjory in 1328. Because of this, the club, which opened in 1907, is required to seek permission before engaging in any excavating, though "Divots are allowed!", as the club proclaims on its Web site, as were the touch-ups proposed by James Braid in 1935.

A round at the Bathgate Golf Club, where the scorecard admonishes golfers to "PLEASE AVOID SLOW PLAY AT ALL TIMES," kicks off big on Lang Whang, a 476-yarder that is one of four par-5 holes. The longest is Auld Reekie, the 12th hole, at 505 yards. The round closes at Hame, a par-4 that measures 405 yards.

Catch up on games back home or games back at Hame in the Bathgate Golf Club's lounge, which offers satellite television, a view of the 18th, and billiards and dancing for those in the mood to do more than watch.

Excellent Value

Really enjoyed my round at Bathgate. Interesting, easy-walking course with quick, true greens and generous fairways.

If you fancy some practice before the round there's a large area to practice irons, chipping areas, putting green and bunkered area - superb.

Friendly pro shop is also very welcoming.

Thanks for looking after us - thoroughly recommend!

Great Course

Very enjoyable course. The staff were very friendly. However, as we got added to another 2-ball to form a 4-ball in between a medal competition, some members around us displayed their frustrations with the pace of our play. Other than that I would highly recommend.

Good test

The course is a good test but is fair with a few well placed bunkers and a water hazard running through the course.

We played early in the season so the fairways and greens were a bit rough but ok.

Would definitely play again later in the season when the bars open!

Excellent track and staff top notch

Can’t rave enough, had a great round at Bathgate today. Haven’t played here in many years but just as good as I remember. Lots of very different holes which I enjoy, really intriguing layout. The course was in superb condition considering recent weather and having played another local well respected course last week this was 10 times better. Greens still being prepared but ran true and fast. The staff are a credit to the club, their club pro is so welcoming and let us know everything we needed to know before teeing off - this is something that, unfortunately, many clubs miss out on with grumpy pros who don’t want to talk unless you’re a regular. Green keepers also very polite and welcoming which was a nice change. Absolutely great value for such a course in great confusion, can only imagine this place will be superb once summer hits and the greens are immaculate. Can’t rate the off course amenities are they were off limits due to Covid. Pace of play was absolutely fine, we had 2 boys behind us playing at a million miles an hour but we let them through early and hadn’t a bother after that.

Played with my son during lockdown and before the season started. The course had a lot divots on it - should be using winter mats

Cold weather
Walked

A fair review based on the day

Obviously, it is winter time, therefore weather conditions play a factor.

So due to recent inclement weather, only 13 holes were in play, 2 reduced from Par 4s to par 3s, most on temp tees, and all on temp greens.

Had I known the above, I would not have booked. GolfNow policy is course ahs to be closed for refund. It may as well have been!

I've played here before, staff are friendly and helpful, and the course is usually in good condition. Temp greens, reduced holes, etc - not for me so this did not represent good value for money.

NOT knocking the course, more GolfNOW policy and advertising of what you are paying for.

Course was ok

Course was OK although would be much better if winter greens were cut and not just same as fairway grass.

Staff were friendly.

There was no course rules emailed, messaged or told on the day to me so when we passed a bell we did not know what it was for and ended up recieveing a bit of hassle for not ringing the bell. Should be more explained especially when you have never played on a course before.

Luckily, unlike other courses we have played recently there were no winter greens, course was a little damp in places, but never the less it was a good test for our golf standards, there was no facilities in use exc toilet so could not comment on the facilities off the course. One observation is the large amount of divots and in repaired pitch Marks, the green keepers nightmare, all in all taking into the conditions and the weather, well worth the money.

Slowest round I’ve ever played

Played on a Sunday afternoon in a 3 ball and there must have been a Texas scramble on. 4 ball after 4 ball after 4 ball of golfers who were absolutely horrendous. Group in front were slowing the whole course down to the point there was 2 groups waiting to play on each hole. Never once waved to play through or even an apology, waiting until the green cleared on par 5s when the players could barely drive 150 yards. Apart from that the course was in good condition, greens were good apart from the 3 holes we had to play on winter greens??
