Turnhouse Golf Club debuted as a nine-holer in 1897, but expanded to 18 by 1900. A wooden hut was its first clubhouse - perhaps, on the 15th, you can hear ghosts of the original golfers washing away their rounds - and sold tea for sixpence, with meat costing a shilling. Not much happened on the golf course until 1924, when James Braid surveyed the course and suggested improvements, and then again, in 1950, when the current seventh and eighth holes were created.

Turnhouse Golf Club is a par-69 golf course with a standard-scratch rating of 70 running 6,060 yards. The golf course ranks third for number of par-4 holes longer than 400 yards in the Lothians. Sitting atop Lennie Hill, the golf course offers magnificent 360-degree views: On clear days golfers can glimpse the mountains of the Scottish Highlands (north), the River Forth (east), the Pentland Hills (south) and the old coal bings of Broxburn (west).

In other good news, the Turnhouse Golf Club's clubhouse is no longer a wooden hut; in not-so-good news, the prices of liquids and solids in the bar have gone up.

Golf at Turnhouse

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip from the Kingdom into the capital city and was pleasantly surprised with our choice of course. It was in great nick although the greens were pure we did find them a bit on the slow side. The course was a bit undulating but at £20 per buggy it was an offer too good to turn down and were glad we had it. There was a great mixture of holes and a few were in reach with the big stick but your driving had to be on point for that. Great views over Edinburgh and beyond and also enjoyed watching the different types of planes landing at the Airport. Would definitely return as at £31 for a game and a buggy defo VFM. A plus side as well was the bucket of balls to be hit at the range as a warm up prior to your round

A great find

Really enjoyed playing this course. Never played it before but the greens were good and all the course was in excellent condition as expected at this time of year. Some blind holes which caught us out on a couple of occasions especially the 3rd! Also long par 5s but nice wide fairways which helped save the odd wayward drive. Overall would definitely recommend this course. Fabulous views so some hills to climb. Very Friendly staff in the clubhouse and proshop. Another visit soon I hope.

Wet wet wet

We had an entire round in the rain, but even still there was not a single squelchy bit under foot, including in the rough (which we found a few times due to the lack of grip with the rain). As usual, the course was in fantastic condition with a good level of challenge

A game of two halves.

Despite very dry and sunny conditions over a period of weeks Turnhouse greens were in very good condition although the fairways as expected were very dry. So no complaints here. The first hole takes you uphill and is a bit of a climb but the views are worth it. Some holes are not particularly quiet with regular planes and helicopters flying overhead heading to and from Edinburgh Airport so nought to do with the club. The pace of play however was slow which was a bit of disappointing. Perhaps I was just unlucky?. Having a break after the 9th was both possible and advisable. Resuming the round after a 20 min break suitably refreshed meant a quiet peaceful second half. Good fun and free to make mistakes and not feel too pressurised to get going again. I lost 5 balls during my round. Turnhouse provides a selection challenging and easy holes in terms of course layout, technique and physical fitness. The clubhouse was welcoming, comfortable and provided all the necessary amenities including Sky Sports featuring British Open at Carnoustie,. Good fun comfort and value for money. Would I do it again? . Of course. I just need to get a bit fitter and some practice in first.

Good course

Ideal sunny conditions. Fairways and greens in good condition. Fairways mainly wide greens not huge but largely flat. Course is somewhat hilly but not extreme. Personally can't stand flat courses. Not the very best Edinburgh course but good

Great course and conditions were perfect.

Very hilly and a difficult walk, maybe use a power cart (buggy) if you are not fit.

excellent course and facilities.

played Turnhouse golf course for the first time on wednesday and thouroughly enjoyed it. even though it was raining hard and extremely windy, i didn't care, the course and facilities blew me away. there is a driving range, chipping and pitching area, which i could have spent hours on, and a putting green. the course itself is challenging, hilly with a few blind shots, but i was told by the pro before i set off all the information i needed to help me on the course. the course itself was in great condition and greens were slopey and very fast. every hole was unique and had a different challenge, which really made you think your way around. good course management is a must to plan your way around and ensure you don't get yourself into bother. my favourite hole has to be the par 4, 13th. a short par 4, the tee is on a hill, way above the fairway 100ft plus, tight tee shot with out of bounds left and gorse, trees and thick rough to the right, gorgeous. will definately be back, in fact i would join but 40 mins from house.

Winter conditions

Unfortunately there was full winter tees. With one winter green. The rest of the greens were in very good condition.

The layout of course was also altered. For a visitor this was confusing. Not sure why some clubs do this. The cost of £19 for winter golf is too expensive.

Clubhouse excellent and reasonably priced.

Turnhouse GC

Got a great deal on Golf Now, and caught a great weather day on this course adjacent to the Edinburg airport.

Well maintained course with very friendly & accommodating staff.

I am a high handicapper, so for me it was somewhat challenging. Greens on this course ( and another I played during visit ) were much faster than I typically see in the northeast USA.

Nice pub in clubhouse to enjoy a post round drink.
