Tee time delayed
The course was good.
But many peolple, very busy so we waited for a half hour. staff didn't expalin why teen time wes delayed. That's why we colud play only 14hole because of sunset. If we played on time, we could play the whole 18 hole.
Good layout course
Greens were bumpy and too many ball marks.
Slow play
The course was in average shape. The fairways were green but a few of the greens were starting to show what seemed to be a fungus that eats up the green in patches. My biggest gripe is the slow play, "hit and wait on every hole.
Must play it.
Overall good Golf course to play, if you haven't played in a while you're in for a treat. Great layout and amenities. Friendly stuff.
Solid short course
Great course in good condition. On the shorter side with plenty of well placed hazards to make it tough enough. Definitely one of the best courses in Long Beach.
Great experience
Slow pace, tough layout with alot of trees, if you're disciplined enough to put away your driver this course can bend...but of course who ever does that...they allow 5 somes which slows it down even more...I was a single, walked on , put me a great bunch of.guys had a blast...hot food at the turn, picked up a freshly made hotdog and hamburgers in less than five minutes...a must play. GOOD LUCK
Classic public course
Great course layout. Well maintained for a public course & usually a good pace of play. Lots of trees but very fair.
Fast greens
Greens in great shape. You won't get much roll onto green and balls don't stay on green unless lofted approach. Enjoyed this course pretty fair.
Great course for the money
Fantastic weather, great course. Just needs a beer cart girl
Nice course, slowwww!
Very nice course conditions. Bunkers nice, greens had good roll, fairways in good condition, tee boxes flat. Only complaint is the driving range grass was poor but at least they let you hit off the grass. Pace was so slow. Tee'd off 35 mins late. And took 3.5 hours to make the turn. Finally quit after 12 about 5 hours into the round. Never once saw a Marshall and it was a busy Friday.
5 some makes slow
The course allows 5 some which makes the entire pace slow. Cource is short but trees make it difficult.
Birthday Round
The golfnow.com for the discounted rate plus the additional discount for my bday. I've always love this course. There is only one thing the I noticed when we played, there was a group of six some 2 or 3 group ahead of us.
CANCELATION CHARGES
Setup tee time on GN in morning. When a employee
needed medical care I had to cancel. Even though
my playing partner went to the course before our
starting time to cancel the course would not allow it.
Call the course manager and still refused to not charge me for the cancellation. Bad customer care.
I have played the course many time before, but never again. I have cancelled other times at other coursed by calling the pro shop and was never charged. Looks like times are hard at El Dorado.
Very slow play
The weather was great so I booked this course through GolfNow to get some golf in. We arrive at the course and are told they were 40 minutes behind but not to worry we will adjust the price, ok that's fair, stuff happens. I later learn from complete strangers that they booked 3 tournaments this day, OMG, this is crazy. We finally get out to play, because others left in disgust, and there is no discount. Also, the play was so slow we only got in 11 holes before darkness. Sorry to say I won't be back unless major changes are made, like being honest with the customer and enforcing the speed of play. Oh wait, I failed to mention that while waiting for our tee time, we went into the bar and we're told we could not sit there, the seats were reserved, unbelievable, major changes are needed.
Behind Schedule
I usually try not to play this course on the weekends unless I'm playing 9 holes in the late afternoon, but I'd though I'd try it anyway. Well I remembered why when I found out the course was over 30 min behind schedule and the pace of play was very slow. Of course we didn't finish. It'll probably be another 10 years before I play here on a Saturday.
A beautiful day
Perfect golf weather. Course was in just "OK" condition. Not bad, considering the drought. Pace of play was pretty slow. Marshalls are pretty much useless. But I guess there's not much you can do with American Golf's policy of putting out fivesomes. Especially when most of the people in the group are 25+ handicaps. Hey, I don't care how poorly you play, just don't play slow, and keep up with the group in front of you. Pretty simple. Pay attention.
They allow 5 somes, tee boxes under repair
Me and my buddy got a tee time for 12:04 on a Thursday. Low and behold they paired us up with 3 singles. Whaaaat? We didn't tee off until 12:20 which isn't bad and played about 4 1/2 hrs which isn't bad but not great for a Thursday. I wouldn't attempt to play here on the weekend. The put another 5 some in front of us so it was slow. I thought most courses didnt' allow 5 somes anymore. Not here, they go for the buck and put as many as they can out there. They don't care about your experience.
A few things to not that they don't tell you: the tee boxes are under repair and are dirt. Some of the tee boxes were hard to even put the tee in the ground since it was so hard. Greens were punched a few weeks ago and still not healed yet on the back nine holes. A few of the holes seem to be diseased on the front and too many divot marks not repaired or not repaired correctly.
The bunkers were bad sine they had little to no sand. Made bunker shots very difficult.
I like the course layout but it gets too much play and takes too long to play a round for a course that is in bad to mediocre condition.
I won't return anytime soon.
Decent even with maintenance crews working
Course is over seeding for winter. The tee boxes are full of manure, and the greens are healing from being punched. In 4 weeks, should be nice again. The layout is nice, very narrow and small greens. But overall, a fair course. Worth playing every now and then. I'd recommend. But wait till December for the course to heal. It will be nice.
El Dorado Park
Walked the Blues (71.0/127/6461) with Sngernz 9/18, teeing off around 7:30 in hot, humid conditions. $36 to walk on their standard early weekday rate. Thanks to Stew for setting this up, enjoyed the course and the company!
The POP was painful, we played as a 5some for 14 holes (thanks American Golf!), then 2 guys left and we finished as a 3some. Probably not a coincidence I played the final 4 holes in +1 for my best 4 hole stretch of the day. 4H, 45M on a weekday morning seemed like 5H, 45M.
Speaking of the course, 1st time I had played here since the early 90's. I remember eagling a par 5 on the front on a prior visit. However, even after seeing the two front nine par 5's, I could not even tell which one it was, that's how long it's been since I played here.
I thought the course conditions were OK and could have been quite good overall, except for 6-8 greens that looked like a practice chipping green where every shot left a pitch mark and no one ever bothered to fix them. #1 is a short par 4 over a creek, so it's likely that almost everyone is playing a short, lofted club into that green. Take any random square yard on the front of that green and I defy you to find one that did not have a 1/2 dozen or more pot holes from old, unrepaired pitch marks. Looked like the surface of the moon!
Normally, my reviews start from the tee and work to the green. However, since I have been talking about greens, lets keep going and work in reverse on this review. Bumpy, mostly firm, medium speed with the aforementioned abundance of unrepaired pitch marks. The course was doing a reasonable job at maintenance, this was a golfer issue. Even though they look nice, some of the poorer greens I have putted on recently was the net result.
The rest of the course was average to above average.
The traps were excellent, nicely maintained with good quality sand. And I sampled my fair share to make sure my 1st, 2nd even 3rd impressions were correct.
The mostly kikuyu rough was decent, good coverage. Plenty of mature trees to catch errant shots. I hit some of my best shots of the day getting errant drives left back into play.
The fairways were also decent, few areas of bad divot damage and good coverage.
The tees were good overall, they had done a good job of rotation and I had no trouble finding level lies on decent turf.
I liked the course layout overall, nothing spectacular but no bad golf holes either. The customer service was good. Nice restaurant, I had a burger combo after the round, decent quality at prices you would expect at a golf course. IF the golfers would repair their ball marks, this is a course worth playing. However, if the green conditions I played on today are indicative of the way local golfers take care of this course, I would rarely play here even though the layout and the rest of the course were average to above average.
