Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
No Marshal
I’ve played here many times and always enjoyed playing a PGA course. Despite the heat and lack of rain, prior to this weekend, the course was in great shape. Greens were fast and true, even though they were punched 10 days ago. Fairways were brown in some spots, but overall nice.
My biggest complaint was the pace of play. We played played late in the afternoon, so I expected some traffic, but actually it was wide open. However, we had a foursome that teed off about 15 minutes before we did. They took forever and didn’t have anyone ahead of them. No Marshal in sight. GCOH, if you’re going to charge those rates, get a marshal, please.
Great course great value
I got a round in during a hot afternoon on a Wednesday for $60. The course is immaculate and I got a steal. This is a kind of course I usually only see on TV with the pros playing and it was a gem, . Enjoyed it immensely.
Note: Beware of raccoons trying to steal your belongings. For real! Keep your important things n your bag. Two raccoons attempted to steal from my cart.
Long Course! Great Value
Played the Tournament Course Blues not the Tips. 6500+ yds required atleast 200 yd carry on half the tees. Fairways are wide enough and good condition; however, greens had been aerated recently and gave a bouncing putt half the time. Overall, the course is well laid out and beautiful. It is not for the faint of heart. It is challenging and you’re going to need your sand-wedge from green side bunkers!
Water in the cart and at the halfway point. No cart-person with amenities to buy, so bring some sodas if that is your thing.
Play at normal pace and took an average 4 hours to complete the round.
In summary, bring extra balls due to water hazards, a good green side bunker game, and a long drive atleast 200yd carry - and you’re going to really enjoy this round!
Very nice course
The course was In very nice shape except for it raining while we were there but you can’t do anything about that. But overall very nice course.
Was a little underwhelmed, considering this was the former host of the Houston Open. I’m not knocking it, but there just weren’t any memorable holes. The land was uninteresting and the holes seemed too similar to me.
This area has been battling a drought over the past month. Still, the conditions were good. There were some crispy spots in the fairways, but it did not detract. The firmness with which it played was one of the highlights of the round.
Greens had been aerated a week and a half ago. Still a little bumpy, but almost recovered. A little rain and one good rolling would bring them back to normal.
What happened to GCOH
Started at 700am. Usually this is a top notch course with superb treatment. Unfortunately not today. There was no scorecard on the cart. The cooler that is normally filled with water and ice was empty. Next the half way house was locked and not staffed. Worse- the restrooms were CLOSED and locked. The on course ice machines were empty on a 100 degree day. Needless to say I was very disappointed
Great course…
Great course, but it’s expensive, and they need to provide ore opportunities to get water. We played in 100 degrees and by 15th we were dragging despite filling our bottles at the rare opportunities to do so. For that price, they should include more waters in cart and even have folks drive around with water fillips since they don’t have coolers throughout course to fill up.
This was definately the best money I could spend playing golf. It was truly a wonderful golf course. Greens were Awesome as was the fairways and bunkers.
Great course
This is a very well maintained course; superb even. However the rates are extremely high especially for this time of year; $170 weekend morning rate. I believe these prices are based on the fact that they USED to host the Shell Houston Open and that the PGA tour USED to play on the course. I will say that the greens, tee boxes, fairways and bunkers are the best around.
