Chardonnay Golf Club
About
Sitting at the gateway to the renowned Napa Valley wine district, Chardonnay Golf Club meanders through acres of lush Chardonnay and Merlot vineyards dotted with sparkling lakes and wandering creeks. Native flora and fauna cover the golf course, which also provides a home for an abundance of wildlife including hawks, foxes, bobcats, and even the occasional golden eagle. Besides the spectacular setting, the layout provides one of the most challenging rounds in the area. The rolling landscape provides interesting elevation changes and there are plenty of mature trees coming into play. Several holes also feature water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. Chardonnay Golf Club's greens are lightning fast and the course plays long. One of the most memorable holes, both for the scenery and level of difficulty is the par-3 eighth. This hole is framed by stunning views of the Valley and it requires some clever shotmaking skills.

Its' turning Yellow
I have been playing here since it opened in the late 80s and never seen it in this state, It looks like the course has not been watered in a month.. The greens were also slow as if to conserve water. It has been going downhill since the new management took over. I hope somebody that knows what they are doing takes over since it was Gem at it's prime.
Awesome golf course!
As always, had a great time playing Chardonay. Definitely will be back soon!
What happened to this place?
Sadly, Something is wrong with the management of the golf course . It is my home course and I have played it over 50 times in my life.
It is by far away in the worst condition I’ve ever seen it. Barely any grass on the tee boxes. Good luck finding a flat place to stand on a par three. The traps are unplayable as there is no sand. (None) It’s all compact dirt. More than 50% of the rough is Brown with dead grass. These guys are obviously either out of water, out of money, or a combination of both. The sad thing is this is early June and we haven’t even gone through the hot summer.
Positives- Staff was friendly, food was good at the clubhouse. Greens were the most playable part of the course at a six out of 10. Never thought in my life I’d say that Kennedy Napa and Hiddenbrook are in much better condition.
Use to be better
Before Covid, I played Chardonnay weekly for about 6 yrs. Although slightly dry due to the drought, the fairways and greens were always in good condition, but the bunkers were very firm. The course was watered and well maintained. The amenities and staff were also always good. Customer service was great. The only thing different now is that the course is more dry even tho the drought is over. The fairways are ok and there is enough green grass, but there are more brown dry areas than before. It's only mid-June and not even hot yet. More water is needed. Not horrible but the green grass coverage and growth is not as good as it was. The putting greens are still good and challenging, but they hadn't been cut that Monday morning, so a bit slow and uneven, so a rolling ball would get pushed around and break or not break from the grain much more than usual. Again, not horrible, but not nearly as good as in the past. Bad timing or lower maintenance, I don't know. It's a public course so I can live with less than perfect fairways, but the putting greens need to be more regularly. It's not worth the time and effort to read a putt and put a good roll on ball when the grass is too long.
Poor course maintenance, water/sewage/mud problem, but staff were incredibly friendly
Took my dad out to play a round thinking it would be a nice course with at least one or two “wow factors” as it is a located in Napa and a country club with members vs non-members.
Both of us are avid golf players and play 3-4 rounds a week across courses in the Bay Area so we were excited to check this one out only to be disappointed.
Notes and takeaways:
-pace of play was horrendous. One group on the green, one group in the fairway, another group waiting to tee off.
I understand it was a Sunday and Father’s Day, so I’ll give them benefit of the doubt but they should have spaced it out more between tee times on this specific day
-our golf cart was on 4% battery on hole 12 so we had to drive back to get a new cart
-there was mud, hidden mini lakes under the grass in 1-2 fairways where it looks smooth and nice but you step on it and your entire foot is in water, the single bathroom mid-course had sewage water leaking outside it right next to the tee box and smelled horrible
-the bunkers had literally no sand in them. They were more barren holes and looked like the Grand Canyon
-I’ve seen greener courses for half the price I paid
-fairly flat and easy course. Greens were decent and maintained but anything leading up to the flag was just “meh”
-staff were extremely friendly and accommodating no issues there
Don't Waste Your Time
Ok course but for the price not worth it. Cart girl doesn't have anything stocked and staff has zero sense of urgency for anything. Course conditions sucked, every bunker was like playing off the cart path.
Beautiful Layout, But Mediocre Shape
It’s a shame that this (formally wonderful) course is not well taken care of.
For Example:
(1) Tee areas had no grass, just dirt & some crab grass
(2) Sand traps have turned into concrete (no loose sand present)
Course needs serious work. Greens were nice.
Spectators
I was paired with a twosome that was actually a foursome because they brought their wives along as spectators. Not cool man. I know that spectators are allowed at cheap municipals sometimes but I thought Chardonnay had higher standards.
Not nearly as good as it once was
I’ve played this course a lot and it’s really dropped off :( not 1 grain of sand in the bunkers(dirt) tee nieces were all dirt and sand no grass. Range was terrible:( I payed $70 and drove an hour to get there. I weren’t go back
Aging Course
This course is located in a beautiful area of Napa and framed by vineyards of many of the fairways. It’s a great value for the money and offers a good pace for average players, but all of the facilities are aging. I don’t mind playing here with friends but I would not bring a client or business opportunity here.
A fun golf day
We enjoyed the game in this gorgeous day. Love to play again here. We all had fun.
A long day of golf
Due to tournament scheduling before our tee time. We had a long day out there. Anyway, we still had fun. Hope to play again.
you have to do better Chardonnay
This is the course that I usually enjoy. I was so disappointed seeing the course conditions. The weeds were at least 6 feet tall in some areas. I saw a lot of workers working on the vines, but not enough working on the grounds. Hopefully they’ll get together and become what it once was.
Course seemed like a public, unkept course
The car was damaged and they did not have any score cards?!!! What golf course has no score cards?!! They had plenty of pencils, however!!
Tragically neglected!! So sad. Used to be great.
I absolutely love the layout and scenery at Chardonnay !! Unfortunately the fairways are dry, the greens are terrible and there is NO sand in any of the bunkers. Whomever is responsible should be punished and fired.
Greens Still Healing
Played on 4/26- greens still healing, bumpy and dimpled. Pace of play was terrible- 5:15 for the round. There was a 5some out ahead of us. Course a bit shabby, but I love the layout and it's a beautiful course with great views of the Napa Valley.
Great Track gone downhill
This is a wonderful layout and feel, unfortunately the conditions have severly dropped since I started playing this course 8 yrs ago... Fairways aren't cut nor flat, with tons of animal holes and mud mounds everywhere. Tee boxes were all sorts of caddywhompus and overall conditions everywhere were pretty bad... Probably won't be coming back for a while and will be playing Eagle Vines in the meantime which is consistently in good condition. Hot dog here at Chardonnay was also blah and noticeably old/reheated multiple times.
Course is fun but the rough need to clean up
The frustrating things is pace off play so slow, I really hope there's a Marshall to keep things flowing.
The rough need to be trimmed, many times the ball just gently roll off the fairway and me and my wife can't even find the ball. She and I keep staying at the golf ball too make sure where it landed but....
Yes, we both experienced the same thing
