Shorecliffs Golf Club
About
Shorecliffs Golf Course wanders through the coastal canyons and valleys of San Clemente, heading towards the beautiful shoreline. Situated just steps from the ocean, the course enjoys cool ocean breezes and a temperate climate, which makes it a year-round haven for golfers. Its location also provides the golf course with plenty of scenic ocean views. The course features narrow fairways tightly lined with trees and small greens bordered by sand bunkers. The front nine is shorter and requires more accuracy than the longer, wider back nine. Shorecliffs opens with one of the trickiest par-5s in the area. This dogleg left hole features trouble both left and right. Although the layout does offer a fair challenge, players of all skill levels will feel comfortable taking on the golf course.

would have had a better score of it wasn't for the first two holes Photo submitted by champ471 on 06/17/2014
nice course for the money
very nice course for the money. I had a real good time. The greens were very quick.
This course was terrible!
I am not going to play here again. Employees are not professional manner. They don't help player. And not try to listen player. Terrible!
Sorry to hear your experience with the staff was not as expected. We really hope you return and let us know what we can do while you're here at Shorecliffs GC to make your round exceptional. We apologize there was an issue when you came down to play but we assure you we will do whatever it takes to make sure you're happy with your round. Course always improving!!
This course has been through some tough times over the last few years. Just about a year ago I would NEVER consider coming here to play cause the conditions were so bad. That's not the case now. The greens are in much better shape than I've ever seen, the fairways are still extremely firm with lots of dirt patches everywhere, but that's nothing to complain about seeing as they're renovating a few holes as well as completely changing a couple holes to new par 4's and 3's.
Despite the course construction, there are only 2 things I could find that were actual negatives to playing here. 1.) my biggest complaint is the pace of play here. I understand when a course like this doesn't have a starter. But the fact that twosomes refuse to listen to the guy checking them in at the pro-shop by not pairing up with the other twosome in their tee-time, really slows down the pace of play. The last 4 times I've played here, we ended up teeing off 30 mins after our tee time because of groups refusing to play together just because they dont have a starter forcing them to match up at the first tee. We ended up playing a 3 hour FRONT NINE because of this. It took us almost a full 6 hours to complete the round. Lucky for us, the twosome who refused to group up had carts that died on them halfway through the round (karma?) and the twosome infront of them eventually paired with the twosome infront of THEM, and by the 12th hole, we were on a normal pace. I wish they would have a Marshall that actually enforced pace of play. Instead, I saw the Marshall TWICE all round, every round I've played there. What did he/she do? Either ignored us completely and passed by, or just waved as he/she passed by... Little frustrating, but you get what you get for a $20 round.
And 2.) I know the course is under repair and renovations, but the TEE BOXES need some serious work. I can't say there was a single hole on the course that had an evenly flat tee box. I was teeing off with the ball below or above my feet every shot. In addition to the tee boxes not being flat, most of them contained lumpy patches of grass and scattered dirt patches as your options to hit from.
Other than that, the course is awesome for its cost and it's only getting better each time I play. I love the challenge it brings, you can't just grip it and rip it and expect your next shot to be playable. It really requires strategic play with minimal room for error. I'm definitely going to continue to play here as renovations continue. I just hope they do something to crack down on the pace of play.
Thank you for leaving your detailed review and for taking the time to provide feedback on Shorecliffs Golf Course. We will inform our staff regarding the pace of play issues you may have experience, we'll be sure to better address them and make your next round the best possible round for you. Hope to see you again real soon, thanks for noticing all our improvements!
Challenging course - helps golfers improve their driving accuracy.
Driving accuracy will keep your ball on the fairway. Over-all fairways are green with just a few brown spots. Greens are well-kept but terrain makes it a little tricky. will definitely recommend to friends.
Thanks you so much for your recommendation! We're happy to hear you enjoyed your round at Shorecliffs, we are working on patching those conditions up you had mentioned, thank you for looking out. We hope to see you again soon!
ShoreCliffs
The course is tight with lots of trees, shrubs, and ravines. The bunkers were hard packed and abundant. The fairways were spotty with numerous open dirt patches. The greens were very nice and the highlight of the day. The pace of play was moderate; we were following a five-some and they weren't real quick. The group behind us was nice as we shared tee boxes on several occasions. All in all an average course made better by good people.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Shorecliffs Golf Course! We are delighted to hear you enjoyed the conditions of the greens and your round was made better with good company. We will inform our staff and crews regarding the other elements you mentioned. Looking forward to your next visit!
Favorite course in OC
How do you not love this place? I play here about 12x a year and everytime I come here I see an improvement. The greens are in amazing shape and the fairways are getting better, by the way, who cares about the fairways on par 3's, just hit the green. I've played most of the courses in Orange County and Cliffs is 4 strokes harder then everywhere else becuase you can't grab a driver and slice it in the next fairway and expect to still play that shot. This course is very stregic so hit them straight.
Pace of play is always smooth
Best greens in OC
Can't beat the price.
Breakfast burro is a must
Staff is always respectful.
Thanks so much for playing at Shorecliffs! We are happy to hear you loved the whole list of things here at the course, we love our fans! We can't wait to see you on your next round, thank you for taking notice of all our improvements. Have a great one!

I like the layout
This was probably a great course in its day; however, the fairways and tee boxes were in really rough shape.
The greens on the other hand were in very good condition. I do like the layout as there is lots of variety and some scenic views.
Unfortunately it is under maintained.
We booked late on Golf Now and got an amazing rate of $14.00 which makes it pretty hard to complain.
I would say it was great value if your expectations aren't too high.
Thank you for leaving your review on Shorecliffs GC! We appreciate the honest feedback and definitely hear your concern on the conditions you had mentions. We are working towards the best Shorecliffs yet, our staff and crews have been notified and will be addressed. Come back and see us this season!
Lack of Course Supervision
PACE was extremely slow. Though there was a Marshall he was not doing anything to assist speed of at. When visual he was busy on his cellphone or looking for errant golf balls. Greens are great, the pace was slow...two groups in front should have been compiled...there are no benchmarks of time to maintain a good round.
Thank you for leaving your feedback on Shorecliffs Golf Course. We will inform our staff of your experience, we are happy to see you enjoyed your overall round, we will address the pace of play in house. Thanks again for your feedback we hope to see you again this season!
Awful
After a big rain it was cart path only. Over 5 hrs to play. No marshal. No refreshment cart. Fairways in bad shape. Greens good. Too narrow for the group in front of us.
Thank you for your review. We will discuss with our staff. We hope to see you back soon!
A place to discover how terrible you really are at golf.
I love this place. It has a terrible odor that repels the type of golfers that make golf miserable. It's difficulty is what makes this course great. It makes a bad golfer even worse and if played more often, skills improve. I became a much better golfer because I forced myself to play here and now other courses are much easier. I also holed out from the 13th tee box at 177yds. I enjoy the difficulty for the reason of becoming a well rounded player.
Best value for the money
Shorecliffs is a very tight, difficult course to play.
It DOES have ocean views ... #5 for example.
There are others if you look.
Back 9 is tough as nails.
Greens are awesome. Fairways were a bit rough but after all the rain ... pretty green in most spots.
Basically a ditch on one side & a hill covered with ice plant on the other ... most holes. Narrow fairways & (3) par 5''s on the back 9. Uphill par 3 is awesome. There are some renovations going on ... so there are some bare spots.
The bar is inexpensive. The rate is inexpensive. Played here for about 30 years. Those that do not appreciate this course ... cannot drive it straight. You will lose balls here.
Thank you for your great review! We certainly appreciate your loyalty over the past 30 years and that you shared your experience! We would like to offer you a promotional code to use toward your next round of golf, please send us an email to shorecliffteetimes@yahoo.com to accept!
Poor shape and over priced
Only part of course in good shape were the greens. Rest in need of maintenance / water (drought?). Wind was a big factor in how bad I played but course was in rough shape.
Thank you for your review. We are currently undergoing some renovations, we hope to have you back for another tee time so that you may see the improvements!
greens improving but nothing else
Came back because another golfer said course had improved dramatically. Especially the greens.
The greens did look amazing, especially in contrast to the brown around them. They are also very hard and don't hold when it seems they should. I also think Shorecliffs is having an issue with their mower. Many of the greens had an uneven cut as if the mower was bouncing over the green while cutting.
The remainder of the course seemed about the same as before. The fairway landing zones need to be leveled and reseeded. The tees need to be resodded.
I enjoy the layout of the course. I usually struggle to control my drives and long fairway shots. Shorecliffs definitely challenges you in that area.
The staff is alway pleasant, the snack more than adequate and the parking convenient.
And I enjoyed my time on the course, not because of the playing conditions, but because of the retired 3 some that joined me.
Thank you for your review. We are always working to improve the course and hope to see you back for another tee time soon so that your next experience will be a great one!
Great value course!
Booked through golf now for a 645am tee time. I had no idea it could be that cold in Southern California. Be warned that it 6:45 AM at the end of November to temperature was hovering around 42°. Aside from that there is no downside to this course. We had nobody in front of us and were able to play at our own leisurely pace. The course itself was in decent shape. A lot of holes with ground under repair however there is signage on the course that states it is from changing out the grass. The course itself is not very challenging however there are a few long par threes and a couple very scenic holes some with very narrow fairways. I felt this was a great value questing only $48 for 18 holes with a cart.
The restaurant and bar and grill while it is dated in decor, has a pretty decent menu with some good food and great drinks. Definitely a place I will return to play golf and watch some football afterwards on a Sunday
Thank you for your review! We enjoy hearing about golfers' experiences at Shorecliffs and are so happy you enjoyed yours! We look forward to seeing you back for your next tee time!
great value for your money
The Pros: Amazingly cheap green fees for being in the OC and close to the ocean. Always have been paired up with other twosomes and seems like everyone who plays there is super nice. The staff if very nice as well.
The Cons: It is a municipal type course and nothing close to a private or country club manicured course. So if thats what you are expecting, you will be very dissapointed...but for paying $33 on a Saturday on golfnow, >VS $300 at Pelican or or $100 at Talega you can't complain. The course has some narrow challenging holes too..
Thank you for your great review! We are happy to hear you find Shorecliffs to be a great value and we hope to see you back for many more tee times!
Nice people.. Bad course
Nice people. Not great course. .. But what do you expect for under $20.
Thank you for your review. We hope to see you back for another tee time!
Shorecliffs
Played the Blues (6244/71.1/130) in about 4 hours on an overcast, breezy morning. I played with Norman & Al, who were 84 & 70 years young, the company was very pleasant!
My first time playing here. This is a traditional, tight layout that meanders through upper middle class homes. I was expecting some ocean views when I looked it up online and saw how close it was located to the ocean. However, Shorecliffs is located down in a valley and you can neither see nor hear the ocean even though it is maybe 1/2 mile away.
I would grade it down for layout for a combination of the following: A) There are 3 different holes with in course OB. B) Many more holes than that have protective screens to protect homes from errant shots. C) Combine that with almost every hole being tight to very tight and having OB or red hazards down both sides the length of the hole with homes down 1 or both sides = poor layout in my opinion.
This may have been considered a good layout back in the persimmon wood days, maybe even in the hickory shaft days... but by modern standards, it is lacking. There was not a memorable hole out of the 18. But it's tightness makes it very challenging, 130 slope for the blues is probably too low. I hit everything from Driver to 7 iron off the tee of the par 5's and par 4's. I hit the ball well and pretty much avoided penalty strokes, and still came away with a very poor opinion of this course's layout.
Even with a substandard layout, I could give it a break if the conditions were good. IF...
The smallish greens were bumpy, HARD (not firm) and medium slow. That's the bad news. The good news is that they were probably the best part of the course.
Both the fairways and rough were thin with many areas of hardpan or dirt.
The sand traps were not well maintained. Evidently people who play here think the rakes are just ornaments.
The tees were mostly hardpan or thin, occasionally lush.
I was celebrating my 55th B-Day here, and on a day the course was absolutely packed, I may have been the youngest player on the course. The customer service was good, they got me matched up quickly and you cannot complain about a free round of golf. But this is not a course I would recommend to anyone. I have played several hundred courses in my life, and taking into account both layout and condition, this is on a short bottom list of places I would definitely never play again.
Time Forgot
Seems better days are behind this course and facility. The back nine is much more challenging than the front. Sad to see the homes crumbling off the hillsides on hole #6, through no fault of the course but does give ideas of the times gone by. If you're going to play over the next couple of weeks, bring some kind of fly spray, the course is infested with billions of them.
Thank you for your review. We take your feedback very seriously, we will discuss an improvement plan with our team. We hope to see you back for another round soon!
Worst playing conditions in OC
Sewercliffs is in terrible shape. Didn't enjoy the round at all.
