Disappointingly poor conditions
This used to be my favorite course for the money but then it changed hands and had some financial difficulties. The course went to pot and I gave up on it for 3 or 4 years. After ready a few reviews that it was worth playing again, I gave it a shot.
There is still a lot of work to do on this course. Way to much bare dirt, especially around the greens where fringe should be. Some of the greens are pretty good but about 5 of them are almost unputtable. The "good" greens should be nice by the summer, but the whole course really needs about 2 years of TLC before I will play it again.
great price on a better than average course
was really wet so play was slow and frustrating from the lies you had to play
Well On The Way to Rebound
After hearing of this facility for several years, I took the opportunity to play on a fine day in January. The Clubhouse is a great first impression upon arrival and the staff are very cordial.
I learned there had been some investment troubles in the past but it seems the new owners have a good hold upon making the necessary upgrades for a first rate facility and course. (the golf carts are in dire need of attention and they are, understandingly, a large expense)
On the day I played, the grass was as expected, in dormancy for the most part; however the greens were in excellent condition for any time of year and rolling more than 10 on the Stimpmeter.
There are an over abundance of dogleg lefts, which is ok by me since I tend to draw the ball, but all in all the course layout is quite challenging with elevation changes from tee to green.
There is a roadway the must be crossed twice on the front side but not much traffic mid-day on a Thursday.
It was evident this property was meant to be a 'Golf Course Community' but due to some conflicts streets were never built nor are there any homes; it is a total (at this time) country setting and I imagine wildlife can be seen during certain times of day.
Go play this course now as the prices are fair; I can see the future making this a high demand facility with pricing to match.
Great Value for the money.
Had a pleasurable outing for the afternoon. Course was in very good shape and very challenging. I just wish my game was in better shape.
An improving facility...worth a look
I've played Falls Village for some time now. It is an excellent layout but suffered from neglect. It is under new ownership and continues to show improvement. This time out there were numerous indications of continued attention the most notable being removal of tress around multiple green complexes.
Overall it was in good shape for winter golf and the bent grass greens were is better than average shape and rolled well. The fairways were a bit sparse in places as has been the case for some time now. Granted it gets more obvious with winter play.
Pace of play was not an issue and it was a good value at golfnow.com rates
It stays on my rotation as a track worth playing.
Course was wet and foggy. We started 30 mins. late
I enjoy the course but unfortuneatly the course was very wet and required cart path only. It was also very foggy . The course is in good shape otherwise and we plan to return again
Two words...Brown & Thin for the next 4 mths ;-(
Falls village in the winter can be descibed by the two words above. They did not over-seed for the winter and this track does not drain the best anyway so what you get for 5 months is a view of dead grass with very little to hit off of in the middle of the fairway. I know cost is a major factor w/ courses these days and many are electing to not seed winter grasses any longer but here is where the real rub comes in...The price to play the track has got to get real. I paid 1/2 of the rack rate and still feel it was too much based on the conditions. I like the location & the fact there are no homes on the course (for now)...Front nine much better than the back which gets long and repetitious. The staff is friendly and helpful. Rate of play was not an issue because of temps but it can get slow here if the weather is nice as they do not send marshal's out to maintain pace.
Nice course, if you stay in the fairway
I have played this course several times. The Greens were really nice, smooth, and fast (sandwedge and LB recommended for chipping). There was a lot of hills and great views on some layups. My only issue with this course is if you are ANYWHERE (as little as two inches) off of the fairway... then you may not find your ball because the rough is so deep and thick. You could be standing right above your ball... and still not see it.
Pace was unusually fast..normally very slow
The choices above to evaluate are too narrow and selective.
So here's the narrative. I've played every type of course you can image....Pebble Beach to Lakeshore and Shadow Creek to the worst podunk course on earth .....private and public, been a member of 3 private courses, Falls Village is what it is. You will need to play your golf ball and you do not have a lot of golf ball spraying luxury. It is not close to pristine and course is similar to Lochmere in difficulty and condition. Very few public options in immediate area, better greens than Crossings, better course than Hillandale and Lakeshore. For the area, $35 w/cart weekend seems like a fair charge....less week days. Anything more they are being greedy, have a bad business model or need to invest in improving conditions. Comparatively to Sandhills courses like The Carolina and many others in the same price range, it is worth taking the drive now and then for better conditions and value.
In summary, enjoy the game, play fast and repair your divots. It is always better to be on the golf course than doing chores!
very good features
I enjoy playing this course , great layout. Course is maintained for enjoyable play.
good value, nice course
Course was in solid shape overall. Front 9 greens were well above average. the back was not quite as well maintained. some tee boxes need help. Pace of play slowed on the back as well. love the fact that there are no houses out there, just you and the course. one of my favorite semi private courses and with over seeded fairways, it is a great winter course.
SLOW SLOW SLOW
As has happened no less than three times at Falls Village, the pace of play was unacceptable. The threesome in front of my group took over 2.5 hours to play nine holes. With nearly two holes open in front of that group, the Ranger waived as he passed, never bothering to give that group even a friendly "would y'all speed up a little..."
Can't beat it at the golfnow prices
Falls Village is challenging and the greens are fast. The rough is thick and the fringes are thin. I've played the course from $16-$29 via golfnow.
Fun layout, good condition, not so great staff
I think for the value (low $20s) it is a nice course to play. I wouldn't play it on weekends, as members and staff don't seem very happy to have golfnow players around. One staff member flat out told me he doesn't like golfnow. The bunkers on the course are in surprisingly poor condition, while the rest of the course looks good. Obviously you want to be straight of the tee, but this layout definitely requires accurate long irons/woods/hybrids. A bad iron day on this course and you won't score. I think it is a fun course to play during the week and would recommend it to sup 15 Handicappers.
throw this one in your rotation
good course for the money. greens in good shape. fun layout
GREAT COURSE TO PLAY
I CAN'T SAY THE COURSE WAS AT THE BEST SHAPE, BUT IT WAS DEFINITELY WELL MAINTAINED AND FUN TO PLAY.
WE HAD A BIT OF DIFFICULT TIME FINDING OUR BALL WHEN IT GETS IN TO THE ROUGH AREA.
Nice course, great value, a bit challenging
The course overall was well kept and worth a visit! Greens were fast and cut nicely.
Great layout but not maintained to the standard that it deserves
It's a great layout and a fun course to play but the greens on the back 9 are horrible. This is a course with great potential that I would guess fell on hard times and needs to be resurrected. I enjoy my rounds there but for the money they ask I shouldn't be putting through weeds or hitting off of hard pan.
