not a good experience
I booked as a single into a threesome. When I arrived at the course, the group brought a fourth, leaving me without a group to play with. The staff tried to accommodate me by pairing me up with a single who just showed up - they "squeezed us in" between foursomes. needless to say, the pace of play was atrocious, and then the person i played with decided to "go back and play a few open holes" leaving me to finish #9 alone. I did not finish my round and asked the clubhouse for a 9 hole raincheck, which they accommodated, but only at the rate which I paid - meaning, I can only play 9 holes when the rate is $15 - late afternoon. Not a good day.
Long but open
Course has some long Par 4's but is fairly open. The pace of play was quite slow. The staff was very friendly.
Poor traps and greens
Traps are in poor condition with small rocks scattered around in 2 of them. Slow greens with a lot of ball marks. Dynamic range of contours, if only it was better maintained. Overall it's below average but would return if there was a good deal.
Getting better
I've been playing FV for many years. This course has had its ups and downs. It was purchased by Tradition Golf a couple of years ago, the same group that owns Chapel Ridge and The Preserve, two courses that are still better than FV but a long way away for locals to FV. I've been hoping that they would put some money into this track and it seems they are doing so. They've over seeded the fairways the last couple of seasons and that has really helped. The greens are Ok but not great. It's a challenging course, not easy by any definition, but not unfair or unreasonably hard. There's absolutely no homes on the course so if you like that, it's a plus here.
The main knock against my old friend FV is that there are always some bad lies that affect my play. Hard pan near greans, crab grass in or near the fairways, that kind of thing. I hit a great drive on 12 that went just off the fairway and it nestled in a tuft of crabgrass 170 yards out with a difficult carry over a hazard. Bad luck I guess, but it cost me a bogey.
If you're a 10 handicap or over, (especially if it's your first time here) don't be hesitant to play the white tees at 5900 yards. Short, yes, but you'll enjoy it more, trust me. It took me 10 years from the blues to learn that lesson!
If you walk this course, prepare for some extra steps. The distance between holes, especially on the back, is tiring. The worst part is that when you finish 18, you have another 600 yards or so back to the clubhouse. I often wonder why they don't just put another hole there to make this course truly unique. A 19th hole for betting or maybe a practice facility. Something...it's a waste of land right now.
But overall, it's a decent track with a range and two practice putting greens where you can chip and pitch as well. The staff is friendly though the pro shop is minimal in terms of merchandise. If they added a small locker room and a shower it would really help.
I'll continue to play here and am hopeful that the current ownership will continue to invest in improvements.
Early season
We found the fairway to be in good shape however there are many areas off the fairway that were just dirt. These need repair. The club was redoing sand traps and we were asked to use the traps as ground under repair. Lots to be done. The green were punched within the recent path and were horrendous to putt on but the grasses are coming back. Maybe two more weeks of growth will help.
Overall i enjoy the layout and challenge this course provided
course needs work
course is in poor condition and needs better maintenance. It would have been nice if the pro shop would have said something about the greens being aerated before I made a tee time. I only had time to play once on my visit and if I had known I would have played somewhere else.
Quiet and Wel maintained
Enjoyed the round, it was my second of the day. They said it was crowded due to an early tourney, but the whole time my twosome never caught anyone and was never pressured from behind. Greens were in great condition but had recently been aerated so were bumpy. There are a handful of standard dogleg left and straight par 4's with no real challenge, no water, not many sand traps. One or two really great and challenging holes though. I really enjoyed it.
The clubhouse was nice, albeit smaller, no locker rooms, and the starter for the day, Tom was really nice to talk to. The cart girl was cordial but only passed us on the 2nd and never again, for a 1:40 start.
Good Course
The course overall was in quality shape. The greens had just been plugged so that cost everyone some strokes. The fairways were green but half the bunkers were mud or redrudged for new sand. Still about a month away from being an outstanding course.
Easter Sunday
We had a nice round of golf on a beautiful Easter Sunday. The course is in great shape from tee to greens. The greens had just been punched and the bunkers we being worked on and new sand was getting placed in them. It's due to the bunkers and greens that I rate it lower, but I look forward to playing there in the next few weeks as the conditions should be great by then!
Reg price with aeration and course repair
There was no notification by staff of greens condition and maint. that was going on the course. Multiple piles of dirt and debris over the course and there was no reduction in rate. Fairways were excellent!!!
Fun Layout, Needs Some TLC
I've been avoiding Fall Village since I moved to Durham three years ago because of all the bad reviews. The reviews were pretty accurate. Greens were OK, fairways over-seeded but spotty, rough dormant and extremely sparse in areas, bunkers horrible, and tee boxes were fine.
They probably don't have the money to spend but the small details in improving golf course maintenance would go a long way. The course design itself is fun and challenging with some tight fairways, water and variation in terrain.
Could be a must play if maintenance was up to par!!!
Overseeing was nice
My friend I enjoyed a great round. The overseeing made playing more fun than the usual winter conditions.
Nice Staff
Conditions were good for December. foggy morning so not many other people out on the course. Played a round in 3:45
Good winter conditions
After heavy rains the greens were still really good. I think this is one of the best courses in the area. no houses on the property, long challenging par 5 holes and shot shaping par 4 holes. You wont be sorry
Narrow but Fun
Fairways were narrower than some of the other courses in the Raleigh area. They are actually over seeded so still green. Overall course shape was good for this time of year however bunkers need some serious attention. Greens had some wear and tear with visible signs of distress but generally in pretty good shape.
I'd play this course again.
EB
Great condition.
Nice layout, course and greens in good condition, over seeded fairways a big plus.
Modern Layout
Played here for the 1st time today. Interesting layout, no houses on the course. Conditions are ok (not great), the bunkers are inconsistent. Greens and Fairways were ok. Fast greens with a lot of break. Have to hit the ball to the right spot on a good number of holes (downlaod the app).If the conditions were top notch, this would be a very good golf course. Would recommend, but not at $47. I will be back.
Just OK
This course has shown improvement in the last year or so, but still has a long way to go. The fairways are over-seeded, fuzzy and thin. There is little sand in the bunkers. The greens are vastly improved, but are still mediocre. The tee boxes are not level.
Had I paid more than $21 I would have been upset, but in this instance, you get what you pay for. Their partnership with Tradition Golf has helped, and should continue to help, but if you can, you are much better off playing Chapel Ridge instead.
Pace of Play
First of all, this is a double edged sword. The course was really cool and I would have loved to get through all 18. However the pace of play was horrible. The entire backside was backed up with people hitting multiple balls and reall no regard to pace of play. No marshals and reall a very unorganized mess. I wasted my money as I couldn't wait for a Five hour round as a single.
Bad directions
I followed the GPS directions from Google maps to get to the course. Instead of directing me to the course, it took me to the maintenance area on Baptist Rd. I had to turn around and find my own way to the course, causing me to be late for my tee time. I mentioned the miss direction to the pro shop when I finally arrived.
