Needs a lot of work
First the positive. The staff that I had seen and spoken to were very friendly, nice and polite. The clubhouse inside looked very nice. The greens were ok, not real quick but not slow and looked fairly well maintain aside from a couple of spots. The rough is good. You can get some good lies and you can have the ball sit down in there and not know whether you were going to catch a flyer. The practice greens (there are two) were good and true to the greens on the course.
Ok, now the rest. This course needs A LOT of work. Durham had some drizzle most of the day the day before so the course was soft. That wasn't the issue. The issues that I had were that the bunkers literally had to be played as ground under repair and not because of the rain. There was no sand in there whatsoever. Almost all of them were hard packed dirt/mud. The tee boxes on the front nine were being reseeded, however, it was difficult just to find a flat spot to tee off from. The fairways need better clarification and manicuring. There were a few holes I noticed big 2ftx2ft drainage grates in the middle of the fairway and in some cases landing areas. The driving range was very poor, maybe 12 stations and dead grass and large bare spots all the way down the range with no target greens, just flags stuck in the ground. There were also no yardage signs on the range.
If you do decide to play it, 3 of the 4 par 5's are reachable and play under 500 yards. The 18th is a 529 yards (from the blues) par 5 double dog-leg right. Don't hit driver off the tee, it does no good at all. In fact the only time I hit driver was on the par 5's, and that was only to go for the green in two. Every other hole I hit 3 wood or hybrid, even from the blue tees. Many more dogleg lefts than rights. Each hole is pretty secluded from all the rest and a golf car is very helpful to get from green to the next tee box. The greens have some undulation, but not a lot.
the course is a good value
The greens are great the fairways have some spots and wayward grass here and there.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating
Nicely secluded; fairways and greens not up to par
Fairways were recently overseeded so somewhat grassy. The greens get B- for their conditions. The bunkers were hard packed (couldn't find my divot when trying to rake). Also the foursome in front of us was too slow.
But the beautiful day and the course layout made it worth the while.
Secluded course
What is unique on this course is seclusion. Each hole was secluded and isolated which I find rare. Didn't like the layout of several holes. Played from the blues which made most par 3 and 4 fairly long. No homes on any of the holes. Greens are moderately small but very true. Tee boxes were well kept and green. Many sand traps on course were heavy sand and when moist are compact. Well maintained compared to many other local courses. Great course for the money. I paid $23 for 18 through Golf Now.
Great Value but expect delays
This is my 2nd time playing this course. The first time I played this course I played on a weekday. The pace of play wasn't so bad. This time I played on a Sunday. It took us 5 hours to complete the round. We had many delays and lots of waiting. There was a threesome two holes ahead of us that were not that good and they were playing the BLUE tees! They were definitely not playing "ready golf". I'm not sure if this is the norm for this course but I think I'll stick to playing this course during the week.
Falls
I was first off the tee so pace of play was fast but the greens were cut fast SND in great shape ! Tee boxes also in good shape !
Fairways were in great shape with some challenging hazards to clear ! I would def recommend this course and I will be back
disappointed
From a far course looks good but once on the course a lot of work needs to be done. The bunkers are hard, no sand. Most of the tee boxes are un level. Will be a while before I play it again.
Rough Conditions
Pace of play for a Sunday morning was great - under 4 hours - course offers a lot of challenges - greens and tee nodes in great shape but fairways were in bad shape
sand traps
Nice fairways and soft greens but the worst sand traps I have ever been in no sand very hard very disappointed in that
Course issues
This course seems to have major drainage issues as the bunkers are always muddy and the fairways are always covered in crab grass. However, it could be due to poor management, lack of funding etc... The lay out is nice and the fact that if you do not keep your ball in play it will most likely be lost makes the course challenging.
I usually play by myself so I expect to be paired up with someone. I arrived 20 minutes early to hit on the range and they tried to rush me out on the course because another single just started. I do not like being rushed so I told them I would go at the time I reserved on golfnow. When I came back they threw me out on the back 9 and I played it in a little over an hour. However, when I got to #1 I was behind numerous foursomes that would not let me play through. Two of my pet peevs when playing golf...being rushed and having to play through on every hole. Very frustrating. Most likely, I will not come back unless I get a cheap tee time.
Fun terrain without being punishing
Greens were in perfect condition, and the course conditions on the whole were very good. The green side bunkers were the exception, as I found the quality and consistency of the sand poor. Very glad I only found the sand once during this round. The layout has a good mix of holes, with some forced carries but not a ton of overly penal water hazards. The undulations and elevation changes are fun, but it's still possible to find good flat lies if you pick your spots properly. This was the 3rd time I'd played here (and second this year), and the course gets more fun each time. Cart attendants and shop staff are top notch.
Shot Makers Gem! Need all 14 clubs! Great Course!
Course has improved so much in the last 3 years. Thanks for all the hard work everyone has done at Falls Village. I will pass this on to as many folks as possible. Every time I play this course I always ask myself why I travel so far every week to play different courses when this one has all the shots! Very challenging and greens are in great shape! Will return very soon. Thanks for a great time as always on this great Golf Course. Wish you lots of business.
This course has great features
I think this course is very excellent (value for the money), I would like to recommend to others.
Not worth the $$$
The more I play this course the less i enjoy it. It might be a while before I play this one again, unless if it's around $30 with cart.
Drive it straight
It was my first time playing Falls Village, and I had an enjoyable round. It really requires accuracy off the tee, and the bunkering around the greens can present a challenge. The conditions of the fairways and rough were average to poor in spots, but the greens were well maintained, relatively large/accessible and rolled true. There are 3 straight dog-leg par 4's on the back 9, which felt a bit gimmicky and unnecessary, but the four par 3s were all very interesting with varying degrees of elevation and bunkering. The par 5s, while short, are all protected by the difficulty of the tee shot or hazards near the greens. The club pro was very helpful before my round in giving me pointers on how to play the course. I probably won't rush back to the course given it's location and some of the layout quirks, but it's a decent value in relation to other area courses.
This course has great scenery
This is my first time playing in this course. I am from Hong kong and playing a lot of courses in China. It is very inexpensive comparing to most of the courses in China. This course has great scenery and the course is well maintained. I enjoyed very much playing at this course and will definately come back to play here again.
Fun day
We booked an early tee time listed as one of the "fast play" options. Unfortunately, there were members walking ahead of us that slowed us down and we had members behind us who were pushing. That made it more stressful than I had hoped, but the course was in great shape and the greens ran true (although a little slow). Overall positive experience.
Best Round of Golf for the Money
Falls Village is the nicest course in the area for the price. It offers a hard but fair terrain and the greens are in immaculate condition. If you want to feel like you are away from the rest of the world while playing then this is the course for you!!!
New changes to course.
It's been over a year since I've played the Falls. And, I like the new green on # 14. It is a lot less severe than the old one and the removal of trees around it should help it's growth. I don't understand the need for the removal of trees around #5, #6 & #16 but their gone now.
Overall the course played fine. The greens seemed to be very slow going uphill, but with 95+ degree days I can understand the greens being kept a little long.
Last but not least, have you heard about play it forward ? This course is a perfect example of not having enough tee boxes, so that senior ladies, senior men and kids can play it forward. You need to start thinking about people that can only drive the ball 150-200 yds. Par 4 holes should have additional tee boxes that play in the 260 to 310 yd. range. Not only would this speed up play but it would ultimately be more fun for those playing ! Imagine that ..... Bob Lerch
