Callahan Golf Links

About
Callahan Golf Links in Waleska possesses a rich history of more than 150 years of farming and family ownership. Before being converted into a golf course, the site functioned as a farm from the Civil War until World War II. When creating the course, the natural beauty of the landscape was carefully preserved. As its name would suggest, the layout is a true links design with carefully placed pot bunkers and thick cuts of rough. Water is barely present but there are plenty of other challenges throughout that will quickly make you forget that fact. It is gentle enough for beginners but the back tees will challenge more experienced players. Golfers can also work on their short game on the chipping and putting greens or warm up on the driving range. The affordable rates make Callahan Golf Links an excellent value.

Always enjoy a round at this course.
Always enjoy a round at this course, it is challenging but forgiving…if you hit the fairways.😊
Favorite course around
Play here almost weekly. Always in great shape and way cheaper than most other courses around. Staff is great as well.
PAINFUL PACE OF PLAY
I really wanted to give a positive review of this course, especially after our initial interaction with the positive and helpful clubhouse staff. But, the pace of play was brutally slow and the course ownership has clearly cut some corners that detract from making playing this course an enjoyable experience.
Only way I'd come play this course anytime soon is if I have the 1st tee time of the morning. Otherwise, I am avoiding this course until I see/hear that the owners have fixed the Areas Needing Improvement (below), especially the pace of play.
Areas Needing Improvement:
- Pace of Play
- Starting on hole #3 we waited on every tee and every fairway/approach shot for the group in front of us. (the group four in front of us was the cause of the slow play)
- Most holes we waited at least 5 minutes before the group in front of us could play their tee shots
- Wait times ranged between 7 and 15 minutes before we could hit our next shot (tee shots and fairway shots)
- There was no reason for the threesome (four groups in front of us) to fall two and a half holes behind the foursome in front of them
- Ended up leaving on Hole 12 when we realized we had been playing over 3 hours and were on track for a round of over 5 hours and 30 minutes (likely was going to be a 6 hour round).
- No Rangers to enforce pace of play
- Golfers not trying to keep up with the pace of play timer on the monitor in each golf cart
- Lots of unrepaired ball marks on every green (saw no less than 10 on every green)
- Gave up repairing ball marks and would slighly move my ball to avoid putting across the surface of the moon
- Need to emphasize to golfers that they need to repair their ball marks on the greens
- Numerous burned out tee boxes
- Numerous tee boxes that were filled with divots
- Need to put sand containers at each tee box so that golfers can fill their divots
- Need to put sand containers on each cart to enable fairway divots to be filled
- Too many 'British Open' areas filled with extremely tall thick grass that is just off the fairways
- The average golfer doesn't need to be penalized with a lost ball every 3 or 4 holes for hitting a ball 3 or 4 yards off the fairway
- Contributes to the slow pace of play
Pros:
- Friendly, kind and helpful pro shop and refreshment cart staff
- Clean, well maintained pro shop and snack bar
- Clean, well maintained golf carts
- Very good and helpful monitors on each golf cart
- Fairways in good condition
- Greens a fair test (not too fast, not too slow)
- Layout can be fun for beginners and low handicap golfers
- Though hole #1 is a tough start for beginners and high handicap golfers
Good Day at Callaan
Course in good shape fairways best I have seen them.greens little slow but understandable with heat. Pace of play 4:30. Staff friendly as always
Nice course
The course is in great shape. No issues in fairways and green were excellent. A few tee boxes were suspect, but will sacrifice that feature as long as the rest of the course is well maintained. Nice modern carts. I heard some concerns about pace of play and did not see a marshall, but played in 4.5 hrs. Ideally I like to be under 4 hrs, but realize that it is unrealistic these days especially when teeing off at 9:40am on a weekend. Also cart path only slowed play. This is a good course that I look forward to playing again.
Need Marshall and Amenities
Always liked this course layout. Has some challenge. But having absolutely no water on the course anywhere (except clubhouse for $2) no cart girl, and plenty of signs saying personal coolers aren’t allowed is absurd for a 90+ degree day. Marshall(s) need to come through more frequently to keep pace of play up and some course etiquette as well. Not a golf snob but don’t drive your carts into bunkers ever or walk thru bunkers as you leave the green.
Great value course
In my opinion this is a course in the canton area you should play at least once, it is not super difficult but you find yourself challenged at times. The greens are always soft and really receptive to approach shots. If I had one complaint it would be that a lot of people do not fix their pitch marks on the green and you will see about 5-6 per green and you may have to fix them yourself to clean up your line to the cup, but I think this is a fun course to play
Very slow play
The course is in good condition even though some of the tee boxes still need a lot of attention..The pace of play is very slow and I mean very slow. No marshals on the course to speed play up and our group was waiting just about every shot throughout the 18 on a weekday. The new golf carts are good but you can still get warnings when you’re on the cart path which is frustrating. The staff are very friendly but something definitely needs to be done about the pace of play
It's definitely a LINKS style course
I was lucky enough to play with some members who guided me around the course. The fairways were plush. The greens were in good shape (a little slow for me). All I can say is if you don't stay in the fairways or second cut forget trying to find your ball. LINKS LINKS LINKS
Cart malfunction
From the first tee through 9 holes, gps was not functioning on cart #14.
Callahans has improved greatly
Course condition was really good, and the greens were fantastic, other than some new players not understanding how to repair ball marks. New golf carts with gps. Course is moving on up
