Patriot Hills Golf Club
About
Tucked away in the Ramapo Mountains on a perch overlooking the Hudson, Patriot Hills Golf Club in Stony Point feels far but it’s conveniently only an hour’s drive from the city. The golf course tumbles across dramatically rolling hills, providing views that span the Hudson Valley. Don’t let the 6,485 yards on the scorecard fool you, the daunting elevation changes make the course feel much longer. Walkers should be forewarned that this mountainous golf course is nearly impossible on foot. You can expect a few approaches to uphill greens but more often you’ll be faced with intimidating shots from elevated tees, which loom more than 200 feet above the severely contoured fairways below. The Patriot Hills layout is a formidable test but players of any skill level can appreciate the meticulous care that went into crafting each hole.

Still one of my favorite courses, but . . .
First time playing the course, which is one of my local favorites and recommend it, but . . . (a) the fairway grass is too high compared to prior years, (b) the greens are very slow and need cutting and rolling, (c) too many players do not respect either the course, the game or their fellow players because they don't fix ballparks on the green (way too many of these) and/or fill in fairway divots, (d) rangers are lackadaisical and (e) . . . my biggest gripe, some players are allowed by rangers to use the course to give lessons during a round. The last "but" is a huge no-no. We had a three-some (spouses and their daughter) in front of us. The daughter was obviously a beginner and her father kept giving her lessons during the round resulting in our having to wait for five minutes to tee off on each of the first four holes. We complained to a ranger, who did nothing. Finally, at the fifth hole, we drove up to the father to ask if we could play through. He agreed and then the three of them completed the fifth hole anyway and then skipped ahead two holes. From our standpoint, that was a solution to our issue, but it should not have been necessary. A round when you have people behind you is NOT the place to give lessons and the rangers need to do their job!
tough but fair course
i've been coming to pat hills for years. sometimes the greens fees gets out of hand so i'm opportunistic.
the course is a great track. lots of elevation changes, nice greens, overall just a solid tough but fair course. some greens are tiered and can be tricky.
greens were rolling really nicely and fastish on 5/1. played on tues at noon and our threesome finished in 4hrs. obviously this was not typical weekend pace of play which can easily top 5hrs.
i would advise high handicappers to pan the course. you will lose balls left and right here. for those looking for a very solid course, this is a nice option.
Beautiful day spent on a beautiful track
I venture to this track once or twice a year. One of the best public courses just north of NYC. Today the course was in great shape. Teeboxes, fairways, greens were in decent shape. Elevation changes are always fun and the staff is always friendly.
ups and downs
nicely maintained course. lots of elevation changes. a lot of short par 3's bunched together. a fair amount of trouble in the woods. overall, very nice.
Patriot Hill
Nicest Public Course in the area. Great layout. Greens are awesome and fairways are clean. Tee boxes couldnt be better as well.
Nice day
Good day for golf good conditions and weather and company
Frost
Hour delay but starter/staff sent groups out front and back so we got out right on time. Nice to see a place that knows how to run a course
Great layout
Greens were in great shape.
Fairways were well manicured.
Pace of play was normal.
However, leaves must be removed from rough behind the greens.
Great course.
Simple it's 5 Star for everything
title says it all. One of the best courses I e ever played. It was so well kept greens fairways tee boxes just perfect. Beautiful mountain course just breath taking. Trust me you are never walking this course cart only its just too big between holes. So spread out and just a pleasure to be playing on. I've played from 2 hours north of NYC to 3 hours south of NYC into New Jersey Cape May and you will not find a better well groomed course.
Wonderful rounding
The course is somewhat challenging but weather is issue due to low temp... Anyhow, I've enjoyed a lot to play my game and we'll see another rounding soon.
Speed it up
Love the course. Staff is wonderful. Conditions are excellent. Something needs to be done however to speed up the pace of play. Over 5 hour round. While there was a ranger he was not effective in getting the slow groups to pick it up. While I will play this course again it will not be at the top of my list.
Wish we were told about the conditions
I will start by saying that under normal circumstances, Patriot Hills is 100% an excellent golf course. The layout is amazing, there are some incredible views from elavated tees and the condition of the course is usually second to none....which Is expected when paying $120 for your greens fee. Unfortunately, our Saturday round was hampered by some very unfortunate course conditions. The greens had been aerrated (not sure of spelling, sorry!) in mid August and were only just now puttable (barely) but the fairways were done only a week ago and were absolutely terrible. No other way to describe them....they were terrible. I understand that the procedure is necessary to keep the grass healthy and that is fine....but common, do not charge full price, especially when enforcing cart path only. I asked at the front desk if a discounted greens fee was available and we were told flat out no. The ground was definitely wet but in no way should we have been restricted to the cart path only...90 degree would have been just fine. Because of cart path only, the pace of play slowed down a tremendous amount as each member of our foursome had to walk to their ball each hole and with 4 different skilled golfers in our group (as well as the group ahead) the round took just over 5 hours. We were actually told by the marshall on the second hole that we might want to think about playing a scramble to increase pace and it took a fair amount of restraint for me not to say "are you kidding me man??"....I told him we would be fine and we were. I just felt there was no right for the marshall to ask us to play that way after #1) paying $120 each and #2) not being able to leave the cart path and walking to our balls.
Anyway....this is a great course, it really is. We just caught it during the wrong time of year and did not get the type of course we paid for or were expecting to play. Would I recommend this course to others? Yes I would....but I would also tell them to call first and ask how the course is so they do not get the unfortunate surprise we got because that sucked. In perfect conditions, or even in good, regular conditions, I think it is worth paying $120 and it is definitely a challenge. I am a 9 handicap and shot 85 under these conditions which I don't feel is too bad. I will look to head back there before the end of the season when the holes all fill in on the greens and fairways because the colorful leaves will look stunning in the Fall and it really is an incredible layout that allows for some really fun, bombs away tee shots.
I wish I could have written a more positive review but just being honest. I'll be back though...I'll be back.
Juan Alvarado
Great course, highly recommend it!
Best views in the NY Metro! The elevated tees makes it a very nice experience, plan to hit the fair ways or you will have a hard time scoring!
Scenic - Greens are not good due to Aeration
Very picturesque. A lot of elevation changes.
The day I played was 10 days after aeration. I'd like to think that was the problem. but besides the aeration ( that was not filled with sand very well). The tee boxes were in rough shape.
I wouldn't rule it out, but check conditions before playing.
