July Trip

On a visit to Killarney, my son and I decided to play Killarney Killeen- which has hosted 4 Irish Opens in the past. It was a beautiful morning walk with wonderful views on this parkland type course. If you play early- before 8:30, they have an early bird special,- which the cost is reduced dramatically.

Golf course was in good shape and the views of the lake and mountains were outstanding!

Course layout has a few blind spots and water (both lakes and creeks)come into play, so make sure to pick up a layout book prior to playing.

Well worth the time and money!

Ireland golf

I arrived early, and they advised me that if I went out right away, as a single golfer I would not be stuck behind a series of foursomes. As if they could not hook me up with a three some. I usually like to warm up first, and, as in the past, I did not play particularly well for the first several holes. The weather has been cloudy with a lot of rain, so the fairways were not giving much roll, and the rough was exceptionally deep. The greens were hard and did not accept high shots well, but the greens were unusually slow, maybe a seven or eight. It. was very difficult to judge downhill putts. Tee boxes were in good shape, fairways had lots of divots, and no sand or filler was provided or evident on the course. They were mowing as I left after a 3 1/4 hour round, so maybe, for their tournament later, the conditions might have improved. Lastly, golf here in Ireland is really expensive, and the add-ons were outrages. $40 for a “buggy” , $50 for a caddy plus tip, and food prices were equally expensive. The course layout was a challenge with both right and left doglegs that forced you to hit into very exacting spots. They have played the Irish open here in the past several times, and I imagine from the tips, even the pros found this course long and tough. Will probably pick another course next time I am here, but I am glad I got to play it once.

Solid inland Irish golf

Most golfers go to Scotland and Ireland with only seaside golf on their minds. Which is fair enough, but Killarney's Killeen Course makes a solid case for inclusion on a SW Ireland trip. A big point in its favor is location - the town of Killarney, a tourist hub, is a great base location for a golf trip in this part of the country.

Another positive: the Killeen Course is solid golf. The lake it overlooks - and which comes into play a few times - is stunning, with mountains beyond. The design of the course is solid, too, with a good mix of holes and some sneaky creeks and small ponds adding intrigue. The people at Killarney are unfailingly friendly, too, so you'll get a good dose of Irish hospitality there as well.
