Crosswinds Golf Club - Jones/Ouimet

One of the best values for public golf in Massachusetts, but know what you’re getting into before you come here.

The facilities are decent overall. The range is good, and having two putting greens is nice. My biggest complaint is the short-game setup. The chipping area doesn’t really have a green to chip onto. You’re basically chipping onto approach-length grass, so you can’t get a good feel for how the ball is going to react when it actually lands on a green. Both putting greens also have no-chipping signs, which is frustrating because seeing how chips react on the greens is an important part of warming up before a round.

As for the course itself, this is not a place I would recommend for someone just getting into golf or someone who really struggles off the tee. It is VERY difficult. You can miss a tee shot by what feels like a small amount and suddenly be 100 yards into the woods.

It’s also all carry, all the time. If your normal tee shot comes out low and runs along the ground, which is pretty common for newer and higher-handicap golfers, you’re going to have a very difficult time here. There are forced carries everywhere and very few opportunities to just run a ball up the fairway and keep playing. Bring plenty of golf balls because you will probably lose some.

The difficulty also affects pace of play. Groups are constantly searching for balls, so I would just plan on around a five-hour round. If you go in expecting that, you won’t be disappointed or frustrated when things move slowly.

That being said, for a fairly skilled golfer, this place is awesome. The conditions are consistently fabulous. The tee boxes are great, the fairways are great, and the greens are awesome. The rough around the greens can also get pretty thick in spots, so the course continues to challenge you even after you’ve successfully navigated the tee shot.

I play golf all over Massachusetts, and for the money, Crosswinds is probably the best bang for your buck I’ve found. Having 27 holes and three different 18-hole combinations also keeps it interesting.

The biggest thing I would tell anyone considering playing here is simply to understand the difficulty beforehand. Crosswinds can absolutely beat you up and have you wondering why you even play golf. If you’re newer to the game, struggle getting the ball airborne, or struggle badly off the tee, I honestly wouldn’t recommend it yet.

But if you’re a fairly skilled golfer who can carry the ball and enjoys a difficult test, Crosswinds is one of the best public golf experiences in the state for the money.

Course is in great shape and value so much better than other comparable courses in the area (Waverley and Pine hills). Pace of play was somewhat slow for a weekday afternoon.

What a great course. Other than a few tee boxes were beat up, the course was immaculate. Once the morning dew burned off, greens ran true. Fast but not super fast. Friendly staff, nice driving range. Will definitely be back!

Great course, staff was friendly and kind. The only thing I would criticize was that people need to fix their ball marks on the greens. Let's do our part to protect the course for the game we get to enjoy.

While the staff have very pleasant and helpful in some ways, I called in 3 times about a threesome that had 5 groups backed up behind them. And they sent a 16-year-old who drove by and waved

Our group always tees off early in the morning. So what a faster rate of play five and a half hours at eight a m on a tuesday is unacceptable.
