The Preserve Golf Club
About
The Preserve Golf Club at Tara features Ted McAnlis' par 72, championship golf course. Exceptional care was taken to protect and enhance wetlands and other natural features of the course. At just over 7,000 yards, the course offers four sets of tees, allowing players of all skill levels to enjoy a challenging round of golf. Eleven bridges span the many small streams running through the golf course, protecting natural waterfalls and wetland habitats. A unique feature is the 60 foot Mount Matthew, which sits between the driving zones of hole five and six and forms an impressive backdrop for the tee shot. A beautiful clubhouse is open for lunch daily and is perfect for seminars, banquets or receptions.

Greens
Greens are being redone. Using temporary now. Tees and fairways aren't mowed. Stay away
Temporary Greens
The rate is low and 16 greens are temporary so is it a good value? Probably. The tee boxes were in bad shape but I suppose it makes sense to let them go when few people will be on the course. The major benefit is pace of play as it’s definitely not crowded
Course is in a rough shape
I played this course 2 times in the past 2 months and somehow it got worse the second time. The bathrooms are disgusting there is no water on the coolers ever. The course condition are horrible the greens were super dried out and then the second time the were temporary and it was even worse. The course needs to be taken care of. This course should be worth around $10 for 18 holes.
Tire Fire
Last time I played here was 18 months ago. Thought I’d see if it improved at all. It got worse, way worse. Let’s start with the greens: 16 of the 18 greens were temporary. A disaster. Tee boxes? None, like playing off a sand pile. Fairways, decent. Bunkers, decent. I paid $26 which was about $20 too much. They’d be better off charging $25 cash for all you can play. They may get a bunch of people to play it. And it’s weird because everything else here is outstanding, restaurant, pool, tennis courts, pro shop, carts, the development etc. The only lousy thing is the golf course. Let’s hope someone sinks some serious money into it because it’s a great layout and the neighbors deserve so much more.
Jungle course
I felt like I was playing in the jungle. Everything was wild and on manicured
So I played here last year and it was rough. I was told they hired a new groundskeeper and it was going to be much better in time. I'm back again this year and it looks even worse. It's mostly the greens. They are just horrendous! I didn't even bother putting on 3/4 of the holes. Once you fix those you c em focus on the tee boxes then the rough. I play there because of the price that's all. It's never busy there even with the low price. I really hope they work on these issues soon.
Worst maintained course I’ve play in the area
Greens eat up with fungus. Poor tee boxes. Foot tall grass growing in the traps. Not worth even the cheap rate received. Hard pass!
Good Course
The course needs work, which they are in the process of doing.
It will be very nice soon when the greens are repaired and tee boxes are cut.
Should be Shut Down
This condition of this course is an embarrassment to the USGA and the sport of golf as a whole.
The overall design brings in some difficult shots and the need to shape many of the shots, it is certainly not a straight up and down course. You have to know your distances and be on target. The design itself is challenging, but the lack of maintenance and extreme overgrowth creates a multitude of blind shots, translating into a lot of balls lost in what was supposed to be the fairway.
The greens are in horrible shape, with broken up patches and crabgrass. Some were so bad that even the course recognized it and low cut the fairway in front of the green on three holes and out the pin there. There is no additional marking or notice, so your blind shot of 185 yards to the “green” should actually only be 150 yards because they moved it 35 yards closer.
The pace of play was perfect, but just because I was the only golfer I saw out there once I teed off on #1. I didn’t see anyone else after that.
There are water fountains and rest rooms between 4-5 and 13-14; however they looked abandoned. The fountains were covered with spider webs and thankfully I didn’t have to attempt the bathrooms.
The driving range was a pond. Not sure what yardages were what, so it was simply hitting to hit, then watching the floating range ball hit the water. No shade, no cover.
The gentleman behind the counter was great, seriously, very friendly and organized. To their credit they did have cold bottled waters in the Pro Shop for a quarter ($0.25). At the turn, I stopped in the grab some (since I wasn’t attempting the water fountains). While in there, I asked him is this was a municipal course. He said no, it wasn’t owned by the city and immediately let me know that they were going to be starting renovations on the course by the end of July. I asked him if they were going to completely shut down the course? He said no, they would shut down the back and work on it leaving the front open for people to play twice for 18. He said they plan for the renovations to be completely finished on the front and back by the end of October.
All and all, it was $20 for me to play 18 with a cart. That’s about what an hour on the range would cost, so for that money, two hours on a “course”, it’s more practice than playing golf for any kind of “score”.
It’s the worst.
This is the worst course I have ever played on. The greens are awful. Three greens were moved to a grass area because the normal greens are in such poor place. If for some reason you hit a shot that is not in the fairway you cannot find your ball. The foliage and bushes along the course are over grown. If you want to just go hit the ball and not worry about your score or how well you putt, then this is your course for a $17 round.
Preserve at Tara
Greens were in poor condition. There was no drinkable water on the course. Several of the water fountains looked like they hadn't been used in years
Crying Shame
It’s truly heartbreaking to see such a beautiful piece of property with one of the most fantastic layouts ever! Be completely destroyed by ignorant and arrogant ownership!
Save your Money
I booked this after looking at the course photos on their website. When I got to the course, they met me at my car and loaded my clubs. I actually got out 30 minutes before my tee time which was fine because the parking lot looked better than the practice area. I figured the course couldn’t be all bad so played anyway. I was wrong. No real difference between fairway and rough, all over grown. The greens were unplayable so I just left my putter in the bag and added automatic 2-putt. The course has a lot of potential, beautiful layout, just a complete lack of maintenance.
Could be…
The layout of this course is absolutely beautiful. Winding through woods and around pretty lakes. BUT, this was in the worst shape of any course I’ve seen, ever. We played 3 courses this past week. The first 2 were a bit rough from the hot weather, but this one was pathetically bad. Most greens were mostly ruined from the heat, and the last 3 were so bad they had cut temporary greens on the fairway (with no previous warning).
Don't waste your time
This was my first time playing the preserve at Tara. Based on my experience today, I can whole heartedly say, it should not be in operation. The course is not even minimally maintained. The entire round was awful. I had gone out with the intention of playing the full 18 holes. But decided that 9 holes was enough of my time and I left. The greens are a disaster, with spider grass all over and what looks like grass that is diseased. Not a flat roll to be had. The fairways look like they were cut last week and rough is longer than Oakmont. Yardage markers were completely wrong. Lastly, the tee boxes are like an afterthought. Long grass, beaten up. The entire facility is a disaster.
