The Preserve Golf Club

About
The Preserve Golf Club at Tara features Ted McAnlis' par 72, championship golf course. Exceptional care was taken to protect and enhance wetlands and other natural features of the course. At just over 7,000 yards, the course offers four sets of tees, allowing players of all skill levels to enjoy a challenging round of golf. Eleven bridges span the many small streams running through the golf course, protecting natural waterfalls and wetland habitats. A unique feature is the 60 foot Mount Matthew, which sits between the driving zones of hole five and six and forms an impressive backdrop for the tee shot. A beautiful clubhouse is open for lunch daily and is perfect for seminars, banquets or receptions.

LAVA Cup at Hilton Head Island Photo submitted by Tom3815047 on 11/01/2012
thngs have changed
the course is in very rough shape, with issues clearly prior to surviving the 2024 hurricane season. Milton recently left the back 9 unplayable, so 18 holes means playing the front 9 twice. it' not the course i remember 4 years ago. However, its challenge remains, the staff were friendly, and the price through golf now exceptional.
Putting on Sawdust
Greens are in really rough shape. Dead grass with the 18th hole putting on what can only be described as sawdust.
Brutal
Great value bad conditions
Fairways, tee boxes, greens were all in a shambles. Which explains why no one was at the course and I played solo. The only reason I would play this course again is $18.00 with a cart for 18 holes and I finished in about 2 1/2 hours.
Save your money
Worst conditions I’ve ever seen. They shouldn’t even be open. I’d be embarrassed to work here
Awful
Worst course condition of any course I have ever golfed
Tara Preserve
This was never a great or well maintained golf course but used to be worth playing at a discounted price. I hadn’t played it for the last two years. Wow, it has gone to crap. It’s in a sad state. Possibly the worst conditioned course I’ve ever seen. Unless substantial changes are made I don’t see this course being open next year.
Ghost Course
The only Tee Times available were before 8am. We were surprised to only see 2 other twosomes playing ALL DAY. I'm not sure how much longer the course will remain open. The grounds are in disrepair. Some of the Tee Boxes were missing. The fairways were like most roughs. The roughs were so overgrown that you were unable to locate your ball even if you were standing right over it. The sand traps are easy because there's very little sand and the first rake I saw was on hold #18. Many of the greens had quarter size green spots and the rest of the green was dead brown grass and dirt. Red ant piles were EVERYWHERE!!! Bathrooms along the course were disgusting and not in working order. No beverage carts available so BYOB if you still dare to play here. It used to be a great course but is just too far gone.
Course needs upkeep
great value for what you get, however the course does have aged greens and could be better maintained.
2024 Tuesday
Of course, has degenerated into worse than average. The front nine was bad the first four holes in the background with Grace and the rest was a mess one for her more weeds growing on the green than grass. Please fix this we love it.
Cheap golf.
There’s reasons why it’s cheap. No clubhouse, greens were fried, no manicuring at all etc.
it’s just sad
unfortunately it’s like they just stopped caring about the place. maybe 3 of the greens were in good condition. lots of overgrowth and unkept landscaping
Know what you are are going to.....
Played The Preserve for the first time in 20+ years.
This used to be a terrific course.
Classic Florida "target golf" holes all over the place.
It was clear to me based on REVIEWS and the price before I arrived, I was coming to a course that has seen far better days, so I was not surprised when I arrived.
Staff was minimal but very nice
Not sure what the ownership situation is with the course but it has clearly deteriorated as the upkeep seems very minimal.
Felt like some of the small MUNI course I played as a kid where they didnt have much $$ to upkeep or staff
I was playing first thing in the morning and there were very few greenkeeper staff out.
If you go, SIMPLY CONSIDER THIS A PRACTICE ROUND for getting swings in.
- I played myself
- Started on the back (they let me since I was a single)
- Played two balls a hole to get as many swings in as I could (I'm trying to make a golf comeback after 15 years of not really playing)
- Putted but not really seriously given greens conditions
- Played in 2.5 hours
Fairways were cut
Rough was so/so
Bunkers were not maintained
Tee Boxes were bad
Greens were puttable in most cases but not really "playable"
I looked at this as practice and better than the range as I got real golf shots to hit
Layout is still the good layout. You still had to be thoughtful off each tee shot shot, or BYE BYE ball
So for $16-$17, just consider it a RANGE ROUND and have fun.
I hope someone purchases the course and turns it around.
Private course across the street should invest and have two course for members
Of course these are a lot of work
It's a shame that a course with a nice layout is not being maintained. The tee boxes and greens were in really bad shape.
