Lake Wales Country Club
About
Lake Wales Country Club boasts a classic Donald Ross design that players of all skill level will enjoy. Built in the 1920s, the golf course has a different look and feel than most modern courses. Rather than exaggerated hazards and dramatic contouring, the layout blends seamlessly into the natural landscape. The routing of each hole was determined by the existing contours. Like many of Ross' designs, the phrase "hard par, easy bogey" holds true here. The layout features small greens with crown centers that are sloped back to front. Rough borders the fairways and the wide-openness of the course means that wind will often be a factor. Lake Wales C.C. is a challenging but straightforward golf course. There are no trick holes but there are several holes that will make you think.

Very Disappointed
Prior to playing Lake Wales I had read that the course was not in good shape, that was an understatement. The front 9 was closed for rehabilitation, which I truly hope works. The back nine was in such a state of disrepair it made me question is it was a golf course or a grazing pasture. There was no grass on the tee boxes and most of, what would be, the fairway areas were infested with weeds. The greens were absolutely horrible, if you could call them greens. The sand traps were more dirt traps then sand traps. On the plus side, this was my first visit to this track and being that it is a Donald Ross design I could see that the course was once a beautiful and fun track. Hopefully the ownership will bring this gem back to the condition that I am sure it once was. Until then I won't be back.
Front 9 closed for renovations
Course is trying to get rid of bentgrass, so greens are suffering. When things get back normal, course will be a classic, again.
Fun course to play
Typical old Florida golf course look and feel. The staff was real friendly.
Hard for me to write this...
I am a huge fan of Lake Wales Country Club and it is honestly one of my favorite courses in Central/West Florida. For the money is usually one of the great value buys in all of Florida.
All that being said, Donald Ross is rolling in his grave today. I have played this course many times and it is usually a 4 to 4.5 rating, but the conditions were as bad as any course I have played in some time.
- Fairways had some weeds
- Bunkers were impossible because the sand is all but gone, liken it to hitting off a cart path
- Greens were at least 30-50% dirt
I pray the course comes back because I won't until it does. I walked off the course after 9 holes depressed about what had become of this course that I love!
It's a shame really..
The design is challenging. Everyone was real nice. The pace was great largely due to little play. This place used to be one of the "places to play" sadly it's in terrible condition right now. Looks like they aerated a couple weeks ago but that's not the real problem, greens are shot. I guess it's the sign of the times, even for $17 it's too much. Greens make the course, this one needs a lot of work, fairways and tee boxes are just as bad. Tons of potential just looks to be lacking funds.
Nice course
Course layout was pretty straight. 6800 yards and plyed easy, pace of play 3 1/2 hours.
Wide fairways with challenging greens and bunkers.
Course was in great shape. A few greens needed work but overall excellent condition. Will be returning to play soon.
Great day @ Lake Wales C.C.
Played 2 days after the Symetra ladies were there.. so the course was pretty much "tournament conditions"....Greens fairly quick.. fairways mown close... & the weather absolutely beautiful ! Lake Wales C.C. has always treated me nice.
The greens are in excellent condition
The fairways were wide with very little water. The sand in the bunkers was probably the least impressive feature and most of the greens somewhat
elevated. I had a very enjoyable day, and I will play it again.
Lake Wales was the best Golf during my 4-Months in FL
Great welcome by Bull, and all staff ... members were so hospitable. The course is long, challenging and well groomed. What a great experience.
Always A Pleasure
We love this course. The greens are really starting to come back. Tee boxes and fairways are beautiful. Mature landscaping, excellent staff.
Very good place to go!
I played it for the first time, after reading some positive reviews. This is an old golf club with a traditional clubhouse – late 1920. The course is very good – to me it could be a twin course to Mission Inn El Campeon, except there is less water and it is more flat. But it has really very interesting layout, with a lot of old trees and it was after the strong rain in the last days in surprisingly very good condition. Tee boxes and fairways very good, bunker had some places very wet sand, but this surely due to the weather condition. Greens are nice, but were a little bit slow. Good service and friendly staff.
Overall – this is really a very good place to go and surely worth the one hour drive from Orlando – and for a very reasonable price!
Great Value Nice Course
Course conditions were great. Greens smooth and quick. Friendly staff. For and Old course it has been well maintained. Womens Smyetra Tour plays here. Definate course to play if you live near hear or are visiting
Nice
Have played here before, but not for some time. Fairways were in need of a little work but it has been very dry and overall the course was avery good value. We were only a twosome and played in just over 3 hours.
Nice track
A nice old course. Greens are great and the fairways were okay. On course tee markers are nil and the tees are somewhat confusing but overall a fun course.
Grand Old Course
I am sure in it's day this was the course and club to be part of. While the club house is dated, the course has kept it's character and is very playable and provides and enjoyable round of golf.
Friendly course, freindly staff
The good: Fairways are rather wide with not many doglegs. The staff was excellent, knowledgeable, and well trained. The greens were moderately quick with breaks and contours which were true to the eye.
The bad: $10 for practice balls? Yes, they're unlimited, but most of us only need a few... The fairways were a bit chewed up as were some tee boxes. There is a marshall, but pace of play was rather slow.
Enjoyable Round of Golf at Lake Wales
