Mayfair Country Club

About
Opened in 1922, Mayfair Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Florida and it's still the only course in the historic city of Sanford. Over the years, it has hosted a number of famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is wide open with a traditional design that is player friendly enough to appeal to novices and experienced golfers alike. Like most older course designs, the fairways are wide but the approaches aren't very forgiving. Water hazards come into play on over half of the holes and you might be surprised by a few subtle but tricky elevation changes. Mayfair Country Club is not a formidable test by any means, but there are a few challenging holes that will make you think.

Tee Boxes Need Help
Please, please, please put some grass on the tee boxes. More than half were just sand. Back 9 fairways need some TLC also, specifically 14. I can't wait for the clubhouse to be finished. Great day though!
Good course for the money.
Once the constructions were done it will be a nice club to play with. So far the course is pretty decent. Fairways are greens and the greens are smooth.
First Impressions
Great golf history. Worth a search.
- Palmer won his first professional paycheck for $528 in December 1956.
- In 1927, 11-time major champion, Walter Hagen, and seven-time major champion, Gene Sarazen, both World Golf Hall of Fame members, traveled to Sanford to compete in an 18-hole exhibition match. The match ended after 14 holes with ‘The Haig’ defeating ‘The Squire’ 5 and 4.
- The course was renamed the Mayfair Country Club in 1953. Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth was a frequent visitor to the course.
Front side is tougher than the back overall. Lot of blind elevation shots (take an extra club on your approach at the water treatment plant hole, that is a very long, uphill green).
44 on the front. Bad shots and club selections and missed putts.
Found out about the history from the starter to start No. 10, uphillish par 3 with an elevated green. 206 to the center, cut 3 wood to 2 ft. Great start to a back 9 36 3196 yds. Very drivable (open) holes overall. A couple of challenging holes like the hole over the road in from of the older club shop. Long approach with OB right and a pond to the left of the green.
Started with a full bucket of sand, came back with none. The cart yardage marker are not that great. Other than that, affordable and in overall great shape. Greens were not lightning fast, however you did not have to bash.
Will be back. New clubhouse being built looks like it will be great.
Fairway Blight
Ok, the greens were "OK" but the fairways forced you to "pick up and place" since much of them were barren. Need fertilization and lots of water!
Golf
Staff were excellent as always. Unfortunately the course is very dry
Greens are good
Greens are always good here, everything else was so so but for the price can’t beat it.
