The Crossings At Carlsbad
About
Southern California has no shortage of scenic oceanfront golf courses, but the Crossings at Carlsbad still manages to stand out. With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the southern California Peninsular Mountain Ranges to the east, the course's scenery is truly stunning. The golf course will take you across rugged terrain, through canyons and wetlands accentuated with sagebrush and native flora. Water or sand comes into play on almost every hole but if you can manage to hit straight and keep it in the fairway, you'll be generously rewarded. The golf course finishes with one of its toughest holes. You begin with an intimidating tee shot into the coastal breeze with bunkers on the left and a canyon on the right, then you face an approach shot to a severely undulating green framed by trees and bunkers. In addition to the course, the Crossings at Carlsbad also has a lighted practice center.

Crossings @ Carlsbad
Played the Blues (6467/71.0/129) in 4.5 hours on an overcast, windy weekday afternoon. Got matched up with Ron, vacationing from N.C., so we spoke the same language and had a great time.
First time playing here. The layout was excellent, it reminds me of Moorpark C.C. near my home. Definitely not a beginners course, forced carries and mandatory penalty staked hazards just off most fairways, very unforgiving course for any crooked shots.
The tees were lush and very well maintained.
The fairways were poor, the only part of the course that was not excellent. Many GUR areas, a mixed bag of hardpan, thin and lush otherwise.
The rough was lush and generally good to hit out of.
The sand traps were in excellent shape, very well maintained.
The greens were flat out NICE! Firm, smooth and medium fast. Get the ball on the correct line and it goes in. Being above many pins was death, so proper placement of your approach shots was critical. The green complexes had many mounds and tiers, so chipping as well as putting was challenging here. I liked that you could go low, go high or play the slope of the terrain as you chose on many shots from off the greens.
Everything about this facility was top notch, from the excellent large beautiful clubhouse to the cart attendants who picked up and dropped off your clubs out front before/after the round. No hassle on the B-Day round, got me right out and matched up quickly. Several people offered tips on the course &/or thanked us for playing. Outstanding experience, I would love to play here again.
Unique Course, but not perfect
This is a beautiful course with unique features that are very desirable. Interesting holes, no fairways connected to others, beautiful views and great staff. The main concern I have is with pace of play. Part of the problem, in my opinion, is that on several holes carts are restricted to the cart path only. while this is fine on a par 3, on a par 4 or 5, it means golfers have to leave the cart, walk some distance over to their ball, take a shot, sometimes meaning a return to move the cart only to walk a long distance again. I don't mind the walking, but it really slows the pace of play down. Also, one hole on the back 9 has a blind tee shot, and they have a player assistant directing people. it really slowed at that point with 10-15 minute waits on that tee. There has to be a better way. maybe course designers need to avoid the blind shots. we had a good time, but ran into darkness before our round was completed and had to quit early, aminly becasue of poor pace of play. While slow players can be blamed for some of it, part of it seemed to be poor course management.
Stupendous in a Word
Being from the east we play courses with elevation changes all the time, but this course is wonderful. Well maintained, easy pace of play and challenging but fair holes. We rented clubs and they were very nice Taylor Made sets that were easy to get used to quickly. I would recommend this course for the money to anyone.
Wow! This layout is immaculate with breathtaking altitude changes
Wow! I had heard Crossings was a great layout, and then when I played there twice in one week I was more than impressed! This course is in immaculate condition for starters. However the layout of the holes, as well as the panoramic views, are even superior to the wonderful course conditions. I know that Torrey Pines has legendary status, and that Maderas and Aviara have their fans, but for me this is the finest public course in San Diego County!
Fun course
Course is challenging and in great shape. Will definitely come back.
Crossings at Carlsbad
Very pleasantly surprised by the course! Paid $50 for a great deal. Spectacular vistas and fun holes! We'll be back...
Lost Balls In Rough
This is a nice course but they have let the rough grow up too much. While not really deep, the rough is such that balls sink into it and disappear. We spent at least 45 minutes looking for balls just off the fairways. It would speed up play and make it more enjoyable for average players if they reduced the rough.
Hit & Miss ........
Played course several times , always great condition and a challenge. My only issue is pace can be somewhat slow, and some days you are over hassled by marshalls, other days u dont see any. Latest experience was poor ..... 5 hour + round (on a wednesday afternoon) not a marshall to be seen and rude pro shop staff when we enquired as to the whereabouts of marshalls' to speed up play !
Love the course and the views and want to go back, probably will go back but just for me needs a little more attention to the speed of play to take this up to 4 or 5 stars
#7 picture perfect around the green.
Played this course 3 times before. I like it more every time I play. More attention needed to keep up pace of play.
Very scenic course
Greens had been aerated about a week before we played. But I have not penalized my rating for this. I would like to play again with greens in normal playing shape. This course has some great views with holes running across the arroyo. Fun, elevated tee shots, and the wind will teach you some planning is needed. Very nice place.
Off day conditions
The course is usually in good condition, however on this particular morning there were a few disappointing features. First the starter had us tee off on the 10th hole due to overwatering of the fairways making play a little soggy. Second the greens were punched and top dressed, not very well I might add making it impossible to putt. I get that you have to maintained a golf course and the conditions go through phases but it would be nice to know ahead of time so you can make the choice to play or not, especially when you only have the opportunity to play a few times a month.
A must play in Carlsbad - outstanding
Played the course for the first time. Amazing layout, great challenging teeshots and perfect fairways.
Beautiful course
Had a great day. Staff was friendly and course in great shape. All around fun day on the links!
Wonderful course
Having read the reviews of many golf courses in the Northern San Diego area I played many other golf courses before going to the Crossing. That has been a great mistake as I enjoyed the course much more than both La Costa golf courses and not less than the highly rated Maderas and Aviara. If you consider that that cost is basically half, no doubt of playing The Crossing first! Course and green are in great conditions and the course is definitely more challenging than the above mentioned ones. In addition you get spectacular views and elevation changes with many holes played from tees well higher than the fairway. On the negative I would mention that there is a lot of driving involved as some hole is quite far from the previous one (it takes almost 5 minutes of cart to get on the 12 tee!) and that tha staff does not do a big effort to be nice: we were the second team of the day at 6:18 and it took us 4:40' to complete 18 holes with rangers not saying much to the slow first group....
Best we played in So Cal
Really enjoyed our experience.
Course was a good shape, had some challenging holes but was unfair.
Greens are very undulating but true to put on.
GPS on the carts was very helpful for a first-timer.
We got paired with some locals who were good guys and fun to play with.
Fun course
Scenic and in good shape...they had a tourney ahead of us so very slow play but all in all an enjoyable round
Great course, fun tract, slow pace
We teed off at 6:45 am. At that time you should expect a sub 4 hour round. Not at the Ctossings though. The back was slow and backed up. There needs to be a more visible presence of marshals to keep things moving. If you tee off after 9 expect a minimum of 5 hours per round.
The course is in great shape.
They just need to keep things moving.
We will play again if very early tee times are available.
Greens in good shape
Course was nice. Very interesting layout and nice gps system on the carts. Only downside is playing under some power lines on a few holes. Overall a fun course with lots of challenges.
Diverse Play
Definitely a play for the books but a little pricey for continuous play. Greens are great and it is target golf misses mean lost ball. Course is located at the departure end of palamar airport so if looking for peace and quite that will not happen. Great course not so great location so I believe it's s tad high for green fees as a public course. Views are good and front and back are two different courses.
