Empire Ranch
The premier track in the area..!! Great course that provides a challenge for all levels..!! If you play ER, you will not be disappointed..!!!
Buyer Be Aware
I read a lot of reviews and they are informative but tend to be more positive than not and ratings, are as they say, over rated. My kids live nearby and I’ve played this course (maybe 1/2 dozen times)since it opened in Folsom, CA. The overpriced rack rate charged when it was new was not worth it then and certainly is not now. Admittedly it is winter time and maintenance tends to be scarce on many courses but the maintenance at Empire Ranch leaves a lot to be desired. That said, I appreciate the heavy discounted Golf Now rate but the condition of the course is reminiscent of Haggin Oaks where the City of Sacramento uses it as a cash cow and “redirects” (steels) the maintenance budget. Because it’s the only game in “that town”and that town appears to be higher income they may hang on but likely not prosper. As a Bean Counter I know all too well what happens when you cut maintenance budgets. It can be the beginning of the end-financial death spiral. Competition will have the final word. Just look at Auburn Valley. Let’s see what the new owner there will do. Do what Ancil Hoffman does not Haggin Oaks.
Great Value
I really enjoyed my round, and will play there again. Greens were much faster on the front, but fair. Some greens are very challenging, because being a course set in the foothills, they are hard to read, But that's what makes it fun.
Great Course
Course is well kept and fun to play. It is challenging for a person of my golf experience. The staff is very friendly and helpful and help make the day an enjoyable experience.
Nice course
Open fairways with above average greens. Fun to play
Course is improving
My wife and I play this course 3-5 times a week (triple play members). Summertime saw significant course deterioration but the last month or so has seen an incredible comeback. The new superintendent is really on top of things. Aprons/approaches have been punched and seeded. The new divot mix is excellent and already lots of new grass is coming up. The leaky pipes on holes 3 and 4 have been repaired. All in all great strides. I'll be happy to keep my membership up.
Course conditions really improving
The impact of the new superintendent is obvious, with the exception of the bunkers, the overall course conditions are really improving.
The traps will require a significant investment before they are acceptable.
Good Course Bad Tee Scheduling
Perfect weather on a very good course. Greens were consistent.
Very poor timing for tee time right after a tournament that had not finished by our tee time and we had to wait until they finished the 18th hole and tee off from the first tee before we could follow. THEN it took us 2:40 to finish the first nine holes. Luckily the tournament was over after that and we finished the back in under two hours.
Unfriendly Staff - GolfNow terms confusion
The desk attendant refused to recognize that GolfNow had already collected $2 of the greens fee. He told us if we wanted to play, it would be the full contract price.
We played hoping to resolve things later. The pace was good, finishing in just over 4 hours, and the course is in good shape for this time of year.
Unfriendly staff, No marshal or water
First off, I have played empire for years. I am local and I have always enjoyed the course. Its not the hardest layout, but greens are always in good shape, and the holes have enough diversity to keep things fun.
Lately, their staff friendliness has really dropped off. They know they are the only public course within 15 miles and they act like it. My experience Saturday included (1) a rude check in at the front desk (2) being asked to share a cart with another single. Not a huge deal, just it was done in a forceful way... and when moving the other golfers stuff, the check in guy grabbed his wallet and personal items without asking. This other golfer was angry and railing about the cheap empire ranch for the first 4-5 holes.
(3) No water on the course on a Saturday... when I mentioned it to the marshal, he didn't care or do anything. He just drives away and no water is on the course the rest of the day. People are paying $46 per player, and you don't bother to provide water!! Come on guys!
On another note, PLEASE GET NEW RANGE BALLS or stop increasing the prices on a bucket of balls!
Treating people like they are a customer would go a long way at Empire. It would have vastly improved my experience.
OK, rant over. I will likely go back and play again soon. Most staff there are good.
Course condition
I play ER several times per month. The course tee to green is in poor shape. My experience is the course is normally in excellent condition. My understanding is a new superintendent has been hired. I hope so because that was not the ER I am used too. The greens are still in good shape.
