Shadow Ridge Golf Club
About
Nick Faldo brings his exacting, often critical eye to West Coast golf for the first time at this Shadow Ridge Golf Course in Palm Desert. Faldo wanted a design that forced a ton of strategic choices and the architect team of Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt delivered for him.
Options? You want options!
Ten of Shadow Ridge's 18 holes are doglegs. The towering Santa Rosa Mountains serve as backdrop. The tall native tawny grasses contrasts sharply with the white sand bunkering. But it's the golf choices that are likely to seize your attention at this 7,006-yard, par-71 course.
The finish alone is enough to rattle an average golfer to the bone. No. 17 is a 157-yard par 3 that puts the wind in your face and nothing but trouble straight ahead. There's a lake to carry, deep bunkers and a green that slants left to right like a wayward chalkboard. No. 18, a 446-yard par-4, places both a stream and big fairway bunkers right in the straightest path to the green.
"The fairways are generous and the bunkering style is bold," Faldo said. "And the greens have plenty of subtle undulations that reward and encourage a variety of approach shots."

Silly greens
In general, the course is quite fair, but the greens are guarded by bunkers and very banked. Then Faldo has designed them with sloping edges so slightly errant shots roll off into collection areas. The fairways are cut very short and they're pretty brown.
Enjoyable by weekend and low handicappers
Fairway is very well maintained with lots of bunkers. You don't want to slice or pull too much because your ball will be lost into the tall grass. A number of greens are quite tricky especially hitting back to the cup. Very enjoyable. Will definitely play this course again.
Very Interesting Layout
Enjoyed the start to the round, fairways and greens were in great shape, however, the course had a foursome in front of us who had just come from the training facility so they spent a number of times whaling away at the ball. Result we waited on every shot. When the Marshall showed up he simply stated "yes the pro shop does that", wow he should tell them to move a long or to pick up their balls and move to the next tee. That is what Marshall's are supposed to do. So we never got to finish the last 3 holes.
Would go back again.
Shadow ridge
Course was in good shape only one spotty green. Would play again with my Hot times deal!
My favorite course in the Palm Desert
Great course, very enjoyable to play, conditions always good. The staff and all the guys that take care of the bags and carts are the best and friendliest, seem to enjoy there jobs!
Great greens
Very challenging greens. Got the hang of them this second time playing. Great customer service from the staff. Condition of the course impeccable.
First round at Shadow Ridge
Great facility, excellent service. The course was challenging but very playable. I like Faldo designs. Need to be on the right section of the green. Round took 4 hrs and 20 minutes. Greens were fast but roles very true.
Greens are key
Course was in beautiful shape. Bunkers on the hard side so stay out! Greens are very undulating so pin placement and approach to green is key. We played at 9 am and done at 1 on a Sunday. There was no waiting in front of us . Annoying on driving range as a golf radio show was being broadcast and host speaking in loud radio voice but that's the only complaint
Nice Experience
Golf course in great condition. Did not like the fealing of being in a construction area. Played with a nice couple from NOCAL and played from the forward tees. From th short yardage still was a nice challenge.
Great course
I'm a valley native, so I've played most of the really nice courses here. This is one of the better courses in this area, also very challenging, especially the last 3 holes. My only gripe was paying over $100 for a round of golf since I am a resident.
Challenging and Fair
The Marriott Shadow Ridge Resort and Golf Course is another one of the fine resort experiences you can find in the Palm Springs area. We stayed at the resort for 4nights and played the course one time. The course itself is a Nick Faldo design and is very good. It meets all expectations that you would find in a Championship Course design. There is just the right blend of sand, water and elevation to make the course very challenging. The design does however include very wide landing areas in the fairways, which you will be grateful for. When you finish the round, the Grill restaurant provides an excellent place to unwind and enjoy some fine dining and a great view if you sit on the deck overlooking the course.
My only complaints about the course are (1) the North of $170 per round price tag. It would be worth the price if it was the only course you were playing, but if you are on a golf trip and expect to play more than one course, it will definitely put a dent in your pocket book, having said that, we did find a $99 dollar discount tee time from Golf Now.com, which made the course well worthwhile. (2) There are a few holes which were infested with tiny red fire ants, which left some nasty bites on my feet as I wear golf sandals.., but I would not let that stop me from playing there again.
Very Strong Finishing Holes
Overall this is one of my favorite courses, from the extensive all grass practice areas (range, putting, chipping, sand, etc) to the friendly staff, mountain views from the course and overall playability. The last three holes will test your accuracy and stamina, especially if the pin is in the back position on 16--one of the toughest par-five approach shots you will find anywhere.
Beautiful layout
Great resort course, staff is very efficient in keeping golf ears moving for a comfortable four hour round.plenty of tees for golfers of varying talent. Lots of bunkers and water hazards. Great overall experience on a very challenging course. Pretty expensive.
Great Palm Springs Area Course
This was a beautiful course and you must play it at least once! It is challenging but fair and is one of the best conditioned courses in the area. It is a little pricy but worth it.
jakeandmatt
I love this course because of its wide open fairways and very well guarded, undulating greens. There are two par fours and one par three hole that will challenge everyone. It's perfect for winter golf. My only complaint is that the sand in the bunkers is very inconsistent.
Great for advanced golfers
Very well designed and maintained. Every hole is unique and challenging.
Well manicured course
I am an owner at Shadow Ridge so I know that anything regards Marriott is always kept to a high standard. The course is always in great shape with the greens kept at moderate speed so they suit all level of golfers. Apart from that the scenery is beautiful.
My newest MUST play for Palm Springs
Highly recommended.
Course is very well laid out, lots of variety, challenging yet very playable - no gimmicks or blind shots. My entire foursome, from a zero handicapper to a 20+ handicapper, all enjoyed this course.
We will definitely play this course the next time we are in town. Thanks!
Come for the Views, Stay for the Course
Shadow Ridge is definitely a beautiful course surrounded by breathtaking views. But it also offers a fantastic challenge for even the seasoned golfers.
The fairways are laced with bunkers taunting you at the tee box. And the greens require precision in your short game. However, there is still plenty of fun to be had at Shadow Ridge for even a novice golfer.
The Marriott staff was very friendly, welcoming and professional and the burger at the club house was delicious! If you're in the area, you can't miss out on playing this course!
Extra Credit: Play in the evenings to avoid the heat and enjoy the beautiful sunset reflecting off the surrounding mountains.
Fun and Challening
This is a Nick Faldo designed course with beautiful layout. Greens are fast and difficult. Bunks are strategically placed on the fairways and make you think where to land your drive on the tee box.
